The Next Coming Of Economic Doom

WalMart
The nation’s largest private employer is seeing troubling times:

Wal-Mart's core shoppers are running out of money much faster than a year ago due to rising gasoline prices, and the retail giant is worried, CEO Mike Duke said Wednesday.

"We're seeing core consumers under a lot of pressure," Duke said at an event in New York. "There's no doubt that rising fuel prices are having an impact."

If this goes on, Wal-Mart could be faced with either cutting hours and laying off employees. That too will add to our economic doom and gloom. It’s just a shame that our leaders in Washington, on both sides of the aisle, are to worried about petty crap and not focused on jobs or rising costs.

Start Drilling In ANWR Now So We Can Save Big!!!!

I mean we are talking about huge savings at the pump. By 2025, we could see a net savings of $0.02 per gallon!

The median case suggests the effect on gasoline prices in 2025 will be a mere $0.02 a gallon. The immediate effect will be zero as we’ll have to wait a decade to see any oil from ANWR. If this is Bush’s and McCain’s answer to today’s high gasoline prices, it is no answer at all. Menzie closes with this observation:

Yes those Republicans have all the right answers. Hell I bet if we throw in the offshore drilling we could see a savings of even 3 cents!

We might as well brace ourselves for $6.00 a gallon at the pumps:

High gasoline prices and prospects for an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal headline Vice President Dick Cheney's trip to the Mideast, but fears about Iran's rising influence will be a key topic of his private talks at each stop.

Mr "closed door energy meetings" Cheney is going there to discuss prices? This guy will fuck us all!

Another Bush Lie Exposed

Bush tried to "pass the buck" on high fuel prices by blaming them on "boutique" fuels (required cleaner burning fuels). Unfortunately for Bush, the EPA sees it differently:

"Boutique" gasoline blends to help states meet clean air rules are not a factor in higher prices as President Bush has suggested, says a draft of a study ordered by the White House.

Although often cited as a reason for volatile gasoline prices, so-called "boutique fuels" have not caused unusual distribution problems or contributed to price increases, the report concludes.

The review was conducted by a task force headed by the Environmental Protection Agency and involving representatives from the 50 states as well as the Energy and Agriculture departments.

Facing growing public outrage over soaring gasoline prices, Bush ordered the study on April 25 in a speech in which he attributed high gas prices in part to the growth of special fuels.

"We ... need to confront the larger problem of too many localized fuel blends, which are called boutique fuels," the president told a renewable fuels conference, adding that this has produced "an uncoordinated, overly complex set of fuel rules" that "tends to cause the price to go up."

But the task force found otherwise, according to its report to be released possibly as early as Friday.

I am sure Bush will try and spin this by saying the investigation wasn't properly concluded, or even "the jury is still out". The fact is that Bush is still trying to do whatever he can in order to protect his buddies in the oil industry, and what a better way to do it than to blame the environmentalists for the high prices.

OK - Now I have no doubts there is some conspiracy behind the high gas prices and Bush has helped me come to this conclusion:

President Bush on Tuesday ordered a temporary suspension of environmental rules for gasoline, making it easier for refiners to meet demand and possibly dampen prices at the pump. He also halted for the summer the purchase of crude oil for the government's emergency reserve.

The moves came as political pressure intensified on Bush to do something about gasoline prices that are expected to stay high throughout the summer.

Bush said the nation's strategic petroleum reserve had enough fuel to guard against any major supply disruption over the next few months.

"So, by deferring deposits until the fall, we'll leave a little more oil on the market. Every little bit helps," he said

Amazing that instead of finding out is the gas companies are really up to no good we just pass the buck to mother nature. The gas companies have long been opponents of the environmental regulations and Bush just gave them what they wanted. I thought our country didn't not negotiate with terrorist?

Bush Is On The Job!

Aww we got Bush watching us for us dumb Americans:

President George W. Bush said on Tuesday he is "concerned" about high gasoline prices, and pledged that the government will keep a close watch out for profiteering.

"I'm concerned about higher gasoline prices," Bush said. "The government has the responsibility to make sure that we watch very carefully and investigate possible price-gouging, and we will do just that."

Now George, we are the dumb Americans after all so could you define those big words you use. Profiteering has me really scratching my head. Would A $400 million retirement package for Exxon's chairman (oh yeah and buddy of Dick Cheney) be considered profiteering? I don't know about your big White House speak but here in "dumb fuck" USA that seems like profiteering to us.
