Save The GOP!

Posted 11/9/12 at 10:12am by jamie

The Republican Party is on life support and needs serious help. Sure Democrats have reason to celebrate this week, but the left should be really concerned about what might happen if the GOP continues down their current path of self-annihilation.

This is something I have been talking about for years now and Nicholas Kristof hits on this very point in today's New York Times:

Schadenfreude may excuse Democrats’ smiles for a few days, but these trends portend a potential disaster not just for the Republican Party but for the health of our political system. America needs a plausible center-right opposition party to hold Obama’s feet to the fire, not just a collection of Tea Party cranks.

So liberals as well as conservatives should be rooting for the Republican Party to feel sufficiently shaken that it shifts to the center. One hopeful sign is that political parties usually care more about winning than about purism. Thus the Democratic Party embraced the pragmatic center-left Bill Clinton in 1992 after three consecutive losses in presidential elections.

The "Tea Party cranks" Kristof talks about is the biggest enemy of the right. Take a look at this last session in the House. When we were trying to avoid debt default, good ideas were being generated by Democrats and Republicans collectively. It wasn't until John Boehner got held hostage by the Tea Party members of his own caucus that things went down hill and our credit rating was lowered.

But the Tea Party isn't the only culprits in this mess. Again, here's Kristof:

Fox Shifting To The Left?

Posted 2/14/12 at 10:24am by jamie

Welcome to the crazy world of Politico:

The grumblers were picking up on a strategy that has been under way for some time — a “course correction,” as Fox chief Roger Ailes put it last fall — with the network distancing itself from the tea party cheerleading that characterized the first two years of President Barack Obama’s presidency. Lately, Fox has increasingly promoted its straight-news talent in the press and conducted some of the toughest interviews and debates of the Republican primary season. Just last week, it hired the openly gay liberal activist Sally Kohn as a contributor.

All along, Fox watchers warned that it risked alienating conservative true believers as it inched toward the center.

Well, consider them alienated.

“To tell you the truth, a lot of conservatives see Fox News as being somewhat skewed on certain issues,” said Patrick Brown, who runs Internet marketing for The Western Center for Journalism, a conservative nonprofit that features stories questioning the president’s eligibility for office. “We actually did a poll recently that said, ‘Is Fox News actually conservative, or has it moved left?’ And some 70 percent of our readers thought it had moved left.”

So because FOX reports more actual news their readers believe it's a move to the left? What's that say about America's right?

But the thing is that Fox hasn't moved to the left. Ed Kilgore explains:

But you need to understand the context: The second graph of Keach Hagey’s piece cites as the prime evidence for this “shift to the Left” the current prominence at Fox of Karl Rove and Sean Hannity. Seriously.

Bain Capital Is A Major Owner Of Clear Channel (Updated)

Posted 1/15/12 at 9:29am by jamie

Now this is really interesting:

Wouldn't it be great if a Republican presidential candidate could just buy the support of just about every major conservative talk show host in America? Well, it may not be as far-fetched as you may think. Clear Channel owns more radio stations (850) than anyone else in the United States. They also own Premiere Radio Networks, the company that syndicates the radio shows of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck, among others. Needless to say, Clear Channel basically owns conservative talk radio in the United States. So who owns Clear Channel? Well, it turns out that Bain Capital is one of the primary owners of Clear Channel. Yes, you read that correctly. The company that Mitt Romney ran for so long is one of the "big bosses" over virtually all conservative talk radio in America. Of course Mitt Romney is not running Bain Capital anymore. He is a "retired partner", but he still has a huge financial stake in Bain Capital. We're talking about millions upon millions of dollars. If you doubt this, just check out page 34 of this public financial disclosure report. So if you have been wondering why so many conservative talk show hosts are being so incredibly kind to Mitt Romney, this just might be the answer.

This week right wing talkers like Hannity and Limbaugh started attacking any GOP candidate that was going after Romney's Bain years. Now we know why.

And full disclosure be dammed here. At least MSNBC announces that they are partners with Bain in the Weather Channel. The right doesn't feel you have a right to know. It might prevent Republicans from being so subservient to big businesses influence.

UPDATE:

Tea Party Racism

Posted 12/12/11 at 1:00pm by jamie

Quick quiz. Who said the following:

If you’re against him [Obama] but you’re for this guy [Gingrich], it must be about race

Certainly you are thinking it must be some crazy leftist making this assertion. Of course thinking that would make you wrong.

That quote is from none other than Glenn Beck, the very man who helped push the Tea Party into prime time.

Beck made that assertion to Freedom Watch host Judge Andrew Napolitano on Fox News Friday night. You can watch the video yourself.

For once I must agree with Beck, but the problem is that the Tea Party has always been about race. These people didn't get upset when President Bush gave hundreds of billions to that banks in TARP. When news emerged a couple of weeks ago that Bush actually gave the banks trillions, did they get upset with Bush? Nope. Instead they tried to rewrite history and make Barack Obama President in 2007 and 2008.

The only thing the Tea Party is against is the fact there is a black man in the White House. We saw that outrage start during the 2008 election when people were proudly selling things like t-shirts saying "It's called a 'white' house for a reason' at Republican conventions. They showed their racism then and continue to show it today.

It's warming now to see one of their biggest cheerleaders call them out for the racists they are. Thank you Glenn Beck for admitting to reality. Maybe we can continue to expose these hate filled bastards for what they really are - today's KKK.

Giving Thanks To The Country That Made You

E.J. Dionne has a great piece today talking about the Buffett tax plan. Conservatives have been on a constant attack against Warren Buffett over his claims that his tax rate is to low. Of course all the focus has been on Buffet, but there are other’s in Buffett’s tax bracket that feel the same:

Advocates of higher taxes on the wealthy do not want to “punish” the successful. Buffett and Doug Edwards, a millionaire who asked Obama at a recent town hall event in California to raise his taxes, are saying that none of us succeeds solely because of personal effort. We are all lucky to have been born in — or, for immigrants, admitted to — a country where the rule of law is strong, where property is safe, where a vast infrastructure has been built over generations, where our colleges and universities are the envy of the world, and where government protects our liberties.

That is what I have been talking about. The rich got that way because of America, so paying taxes and contributing to help get America moving forward again is the least they can do for the country that made them. The problem is the right wing noise machine. I’ve got many Republican friends who make less than $100,000 a year and yet feel taxes should continue to be cut on the rich. Most of them listen to people like Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity. Of course these talking heads will rally against raising taxes on the rich. Just look at their 2010 salaries:

It’s Tax Day–AKA–Help The Rich Day!

Posted 4/18/11 at 7:44am by jamie

As Americans scramble today to file their taxes, the GOP is looking for more ways to make that burden even higher on average Americans. Take Tea Party darling and habitual liar Scott Walker, Governor of Wisconsin. Taking a page from the elder Bush’s campaign, he vowed to never increase taxes. Of course that pledge only applies to the rich:

Yet in his newly proposed budget, now-governor Walker appears to have already broken this pledge. While the budget would lower taxes overall — it includes $83.3 million in tax cuts “primarily for businesses and investors” — it would make up for lost revenue by eliminating tax credits and exemptions that primarily benefit the poor and even some in the middle class.

Wisconsin’s Legislative Fiscal Bureau — the state’s equivalent of the Congressional Budget Office — finds that this would amount to a $49.9 million tax increase on people who receive these credits over the next two years:

Does this sound familiar? Well it should. This type of plan is basically what got past last week in the House, a plan authored by another Wisconsinite – Paul Ryan. Ryan’s plan calls for lowering the tax rate on the rich, while maintaining the current income levels of the federal government. He wants to do all that by also eliminating tax deductions for the poor and middle class.

Beckpocalypse

It's no secret that Glenn Beck's show on FOX News has been in a rapid decline in terms of content, viewers and sponsors. Now it looks like the end to Beck's television show could be in sight:

But a funny thing happened on the way from the revolution. Since last August, when he summoned more than 100,000 followers to the Washington mall for the “Restoring Honor” rally, Mr. Beck has lost over a third of his audience on Fox — a greater percentage drop than other hosts at Fox. True, he fell from the great heights of the health care debate in January 2010, but there has been worrisome erosion — more than one million viewers — especially in the younger demographic.

He still has numbers that just about any cable news host would envy and, with about two million viewers a night, outdraws all his competition combined. But the erosion is significant enough that Fox News officials are willing to say — anonymously, of course; they don’t want to be identified as criticizing the talent — that they are looking at the end of his contract in December and contemplating life without Mr. Beck.

The problem is that crazy still sells, so Bec could end up holding on. That is unless FOX can find someone even crazier to fill the spot. God help us all if that happens.

Cleaning Up The Airwaves?

Posted 1/20/11 at 10:20am by jamie

This is a really good start:

Yesterday, hate radio hosts Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity had their nationally syndicated radio shows dropped from WPHT in Philadelphia, which is the second radio station to drop both of the conservative commentators. The moves werescheduled back in November 2010, and Marc Rayfield, market manager for CBS Radio in Philadelphia and senior vice president, said that WPHT wants to become “more of a locally based station.”

Just weeks ago, Beck was dropped from WOR in New York, but the most recent cancellation in Philadelphia hurts Beck even more. Beck got his start in Philadelphia, and many of his radio staffers still live in Philly, including Beck’s side-kick Stu. Immediately after being dropped yesterday, Beck dropped all affection for the city where he got his start, saying, “Philly sucks”:

Now if we can get more of the country to drop hate radio, we might be on the road to recovery from our age of bitter, partisan politics.

Beck’s Fraudulent Sponsors

Posted 12/9/10 at 7:30am by jamie

md_horizOne of Glenn Beck’s big gold sponsors is in some serious trouble:

Glenn Beck might, for once, be right: the government iscoming for your gold. But only if you happened to buy it from one of Beck's advertisers, the Superior Gold Group. At the request of prosecutors from LA County and Santa Monica city who have filed a civil suit against the company, Los Angeles County judge has ordered that Superior Gold be placed into receivership and all of its assets—bank accounts, real estate, and presumably gold stored for customers—frozen. On Monday, a court-appointed lawyer actually physically seized control of the company, presumably to prevent further wrongdoing. The lawsuit alleged that among other things, Superior had defrauded its customers by overcharging them, fraudulently inducing them to buy overpriced collectors' coins rather than the bullion that they wanted, and taking customers' money for coins they never produced. The prosecutors hope that the lawsuit will provide restitution for all of the company's ripped off customers. The judge will hold a hearing later this month to decide whether the company's assets should remain frozen until the case goes to trial.

Soros Donates $1 Million To Media Matters

Posted 10/21/10 at 11:00am by jamie

SorosGeorgeCloseUp After years of the right wing claiming George Soros was funding Media Matters, the billionaire decided to cave and write his first check to the website:

Media Matters, the liberal activist group that wages a rhetorical war againstFox News Channel and others in the conservative press, will announce on Wednesday the receipt of a $1 million donation from the philanthropist George Soros.

In a statement obtained by The Caucus, the organization says it plans to use the money to intensify its efforts to hold the Fox host Glenn Beck and others on the cable news channel accountable for their reporting.

This news caused wingnut rhetoric to go into overdrive, right on cue from their leader:

Today on his radio program, Rush Limbaugh reacted to the news of George Soros' $1 million donationto Media Matters thusly: "You want to talk a little foreign money in politics? George Soros has admitted to donating $1 million to Media Matters for America."

Political Discourse Via Meat Cleaver?

Posted 10/15/10 at 8:22am by jamie

sollecitoknife_450x300 Welcome to the new American political system:

Police arrested a man around 5 p.m. Thursday outside KSPS studios after he drove by a group of Sen. Patty Murray supporters waving a meat cleaver.

Johnny J. Sieler, 50, first drove by the group with a knife, shouting profanities about Murray. He upgraded his weapon to a meat cleaver and drove by a second time, according to Spokane police.

As he drove by, he slowed his vehicle down and made chopping motions as he held the cleaver out his car windows. Some of the supporters felt so threatened they backed away from the suspect, police said.

Spokane police were on the scene when Sieler drove around the third time.

Officers stopped Sieler, who reached for the knives as they approached him. He was arrested for intimidation with a weapon and booked into Spokane County Jail. Officers found several knives in his car.

No word on Sieler’s political affiliations or motivations, but one can only assume he is some other Glenn Beck worshipping, Rush Limbaugh loving wingnut. Of course the right will try to spin it this as being nothing, but then the right also wants an America like this – one with a political system that reminds you of some third world nations.

Rise Of The Crazy: Sovereign Citizens

Posted 8/12/10 at 9:37am by jamie

Sovereign citizens are the craziest of the crazies. They are the most extreme of the right, believing that the federal government has zero authority and even rewrite history to say as much. But it doesn’t stop there. These people are also some of the worst predators out there:

They call themselves sovereign citizens, U.S. residents who declare themselves above state and federal laws. Many don't register children's births, carry driver's licenses or recognize the court system.

Some peddle schemes that use fictional legal loopholes to eliminate debt and avoid foreclosures.

A few such believers are violent: Two police officers in Arkansas died in a shootout in May after stopping an Ohio sovereign citizen and his son.

The entire article gives a very scary look into the growing movement and how dangerous it is to our country. And while you read it remember that these are the type of idiots that people like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and a majority of Republicans look up to as heroes. That’s how dangerous the rhetoric on the right is giving.

Republicans Show Their Disdain For The Constitution

Posted 5/4/10 at 11:58am by jamie

With the arrest of a Pakistani born, U.S. citizen in connection with the failed car bombing on Times Square, the Republican members of Congress are starting to show that they have absolutely no respect for the Constitution of this land:

The morning after the arrest of 30-year-old Faisal Shahzad at John F. Kennedy airport on Monday evening, the usual suspects in the GOP took to print and the airwaves to whack away at the president and his top lawyer. Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) mocked the idea that Attorney General Eric Holder might read the suspect his Miranda rights or consider trying him in a civilian court.

"I hope that [Attorney General Eric] Holder did discuss this with the intelligence community. If they believe they got enough from him, how much more should they get? Did they Mirandize him? I know he's an American citizen but still," King said.

Notorious for jumping into the political fray in the wake of attempted or successful terrorist acts, King was quickly joined in the ring by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who called the idea of reading Miranda rights a "serious mistake."

As matter of fact McCain has even gone to the right of Glenn Beck now:

"He is a citizen of the United States, so I say we uphold the laws and the Constitution on citizens," the bombastic Fox News host said to the stunned co-hosts of "Fox and Friends". "If you are a citizen, you obey the law and follow the Constitution. [Shahzad] has all the rights under the Constitution."

"We don't shred the Constitution when it is popular," Beck added. "We do the right thing."
