Final 4 Miners Found Dead In W. Va.

Posted 4/10/10 at 8:23am by jamie

They finally reached the remaining miners in West Virginia and the outcome was not good. Last night they finally reached the final four missing miners and all were dead. This now makes the disaster at Big Branch the worst mining accident in nearly 4 decades, and one that could have been adverted.

We have heard a lot this week about the countless safety violations that have piled up against Massey Energy, including in the days and hours leading up to the disaster. Massey boss Don Blankenship was a strong opponent of safety regulations and even thought he could pick and choose what laws to follow.

As much as I hate to politicize a disaster like this, it must be done to hopefully prevent repeat incidents in the future.

Don Blankenship was the epitome of right wing beliefs, so much that he was a big donor to the Tea Party. He was totally against government regulation and 29 innocent workers have paid the ultimate price for that ignorance.

This is the second time this year that we have been given a disastrous reminder that government regulations save lives. I posted the first last month:

Steele Disaster Continues

Posted 4/5/10 at 4:15pm by jamie

Michael Steele took to the airwaves today to try and fix his highly tarnished record. That of course didn’t work out too well as Steele tried to pull out the race card, something he said he never does just a few short months ago.

As if that isn’t bad, now we have the news that one of the RNC’s top fundraisers has called it quits:

Former Ambassador Sam Fox, a top supporter of George W. Bush who was one of the co-chairmen of the Republican Regents — the RNC's top-level fundraising board — has left the post, two Republican sources said.

Fox, a Missouri businessman who was Bush's ambassador to Belgium, was one of the RNC's few remaining connections to the deep-pocketed Republican establishment and was viewed as the heaviest hitter among its fundraisers.

Fox didn't return a call seeking comment.

But Fox was "deeply troubled by the pattern of self-inflicted wounds and missteps," another major Republican fundraiser told me today, and had "lost confidence" in Steele.

This needs to be put into some perspective. We have a mid-term election year in which the minority party is trailing the majority party in money on hand. That is extremely uncommon, but now the RNC has the added problem of their revenue streams drying up even more.

Where’s The Proof?

Posted 3/26/10 at 8:45am by jamie

The “mommy! mommy! He did it too” defense of the Republican Party is in full swing. They are deploying it every chance they get when it comes to the recent rise of threats of violence against Democratic lawmakers.

Think Progress caught up Texas Republican, Rep. Pete Olson and asked him about what’s going on. When it comes to Sarah Palin’s website and the “targeting” of Democrats, Olson did the right thing:

TP: Speaking of gun shots, would you consider Palin telling her supporters they need to “reload,” and posting a picture of crosshairs on Democratic members — is that inappropriate?

OLSON: There’s things, both parties are inappropriate.

TP: Is that inappropriate, yes or no?

OLSON: No I’m not going to answer the question.

TP: So it is appropriate.

OLSON: It is inappropriate.

But Olson couldn’t leave well enough alone. If he would have stopped right there, then he would have come out looking like a real leader in our nation. Instead he had to fall back to his GOP instincts and employ the mommy defense:

While Olson continually claimed that both Democratic and Republican lawmakers have incited violence, he could not point to a single example of Democrats doing so.

Good for Think Progress for asking him to give examples. This is something most in the media refuse to do. As matter of fact, the only one I have seen do it so far is David Shuster, and when that happened the person he was interviewing went further into loony land.

A Leaderless Party Is A Danger To Us All

Posted 3/25/10 at 11:20pm by jamie

Make no mistake about it. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the GOP slowly implode since the 2008 elections. Sure they have had what appears to be little upticks, but overall they have been suffering a very slow and painful death. But there is a danger in all that and we are now seeing it.

Today Eric Cantor took to the television cameras to proclaim that the violence aimed at Democrats is the same thing he has been undergoing the past few days. In this instance he highlighted that someone shot out the windows of one of his campaign offices. As more details come out from the local police, we quickly learn that Cantor wasn’t telling the actual story. If this was deliberate or not is something to be debated at a later date, but what we do know is that the bullet that broke through Cantor’s window was a stray, randomly fired in the air and with just enough force to penetrate the window, but not the blinds behind the window.

Then you have John Boehner out there trying to weasel his way out of his “dead man” comment about Rep. Steve Driehaus (and to add a little more interest to that, I literally live on the boundary between Boehner’s district and Driehaus’).

This is the problem with today’s GOP – they have no leadership. Everyone is vying to be the defacto leader of the Republican Party, so they all go out and make their own absurd statements. Imagine if the GOP had a true leader that exhibited common sense. This would be a person that would say “let’s stand beside the Democratic leadership and jointly denounce this activity”. That would have a real impact, but instead we have various high level Republicans making statements that is only worsening the situation.

Right Wing Terrorism

Posted 3/24/10 at 2:59pm by jamie

It started with vandalism at the offices of five different Democratic lawmakers this weekend and has now spread to what can only be called an assassination attempt:

After a tea party organizer published the address of the brother of Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA) in a blog post urging anti-health reform activists to "drop by," someone cut a propane gas line at the house, Politico is reporting.

Now the FBI is investigating what happened at the home near Charlottesville, according to Politico.

The development comes on the heels of at least five instances of vandalism -- mainly in the form of smashed doors and windows -- at Democratic offices around the country in the days around the House health care vote Sunday night.

In the Periello case, an activist named Mike Troxel of the Lynchburg Tea Party wrote a blog post telling activists to add a "personal touch" to their anger at Periello -- who voted yes on the health care bill -- by going to his house. But Troxel mistakenly posted the address of Periello's brother.

Again – that is nothing short of an assassination attempt on a member of the U.S. Congress. Where is the right in denouncing this? They are totally absent, despite Steny Hoyer trying to get them to help tamper it down:

GOP Arguments Falling Apart Quick Now

Posted 3/23/10 at 2:50pm by jamie

The whole argument that the Democrats didn’t listen to the American people that Republicans like John Boehner keeps telling us is starting to fail. Look at this from Gallup:

As you may know, yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that restructures the nation’s healthcare system. All in all, do you think it is a good thing or a bad thing that Congress passed this bill?

Good thing 49%
Bad thing 40%
Don’t know 11%

This is the first post bill passing poll I have seen and so far the numbers are very good for Democrats. If this trend continues then November might be a very bad month for Republicans.

How Can The GOP Repeal Health Care Reform Next Year?

Posted 3/22/10 at 7:09pm by jamie

The Republicans are going on the warpath today with the “give to us and help us win this year so we can repeal health care”. How? How can they come up with enough votes to repeal health care. This wouldn’t be a simple “oh we got a majority and we repeal it”. It would take legislation to overcome it and for that legislation to be enacted the President must sign it. Do you think President Obama is going to sign a bill overturning his legacy?

Will the Republicans can 67 votes in the Senate to override a Presidential veto?

Will they get 290 votes in the House to override it?

No.

So all the Republicans are doing is feeding their followers another pipe dream. This time though the math is simple – they are promising something they absolutely can not deliver on. I wonder if anyone from the media will call them out on it?

So How Will The GOP’s Campaign Pan Out This Year?

Posted 3/22/10 at 12:05pm by jamie

The GOP has already been saying that they will run on repealing healthcare. Let’s look at the things that will already be enacted at that time.

NO DISCRIMINATION AGAINST CHILDREN WITH PRE?EXISTING CONDITIONS — Prohibits new health plans in all markets plus grandfathered group health plans from denying coverage to children with pre?existing conditions. Effective 6 months after enactment.

So will Republicans campaign to let these children go without coverage? I don’t know how well that will work. They are so worried about stopping abortion, yet once the child is out of the uterus they are on their own? Yes – try to argue that one Republicans.

IMMEDIATE HELP FOR THE UNINSURED UNTIL EXCHANGE IS AVAILABLE (INTERIM HIGH?RISK POOL) — Provides immediate access to affordable insurance for Americans who are uninsured because of a preexisting condition — through a temporary subsidized high?risk pool. Effective 90 days after enactment.

A high risk pool – the very same thing that the GOP’s 2008 presidential candidate campaigned on. Are the Republicans going to get rid of one of the cornerstones of the McCain campaign? Will they be able to face the people this will affect and tell them “sorry – you’re out of luck”?

EXTENDS COVERAGE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE UP TO 26TH BIRTHDAY THROUGH PARENTS’ INSURANCE — Requires new health plans and certain grandfathered plans to allow young people up to their 26th birthday to remain on their parents’ insurance policy, at the parents’ choice. Effective 6 months after enactment.

IOKIYAR – Part 15101

Posted 3/20/10 at 10:23am by jamie

God forbid that we allow any abortion coverage in the health care bill:

While Republicans and some Democrats want to hold up health care reform because of the false premise that abortions would be covered, the Washington State GOP provides its employees health care through a consortium that does just that. Congresswoman Cathy McMorris-Rodgers blasted Democrats for favoring a health reform plan that includes abortion coverage, even though her own state party is covered via AWB Health Choice, which covers abortions.

What’s good for the goose, well apparently it’s just good for that goose.

Sarah Palin Admits Using Socialized Medicine

Posted 3/8/10 at 12:25pm by jamie

How many times have we heard Republicans say that health care reform will lead us to “socialized medicine”? How many times have they used Canada as an example of what we don’t want to be? Well check this out:

Sarah Palin's family use to "hustle" across the Canadian border to get healthcare, the former Alaska Governor said
this weekend.

In a speech in Calgary, Palin called it "ironic" that while growing up in a small Alaskan town near the Canadian border, her family used to sneak across to take advantage of the Canadian healthcare system.

"We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada," she said, according to Medicine Hat News (via Dave Weigel.) "And I think now, isn't that ironic."

Yup – the queen of the GOP used to use that horrible Canadian medical system. She has brought an entirely new meaning to the word hypocrite.

Hazmat And FBI Called To Utah IRS

Posted 3/1/10 at 4:29pm by jamie

Just breaking:

Hazardous material crews were called to an IRS building in Ogden, Utah on Monday, less than two weeks after a man deliberately crashed his private plane into a Texas building that housed IRS workers, according to local reports.

The FBI was called to the scene and reporters were not allowed into the building after the incident, The Standard-Examiner reported. Showers were being used to deal with "a possible chemical situation," according to the local ABC affiliate.

The news station alluded to dispatcher calls that indicated a powder may have been found in the mail at the facility.

I’m sure that al-GOP is cheering this on.

Irresponsible

Posted 2/23/10 at 8:58am by jamie

Rep. Steve King is trying to justify the attack on the IRS in a discussion with Think Progress:

TP: Do you think this attack, this terrorist attack, was motivated at all by a lot of the anti-tax rhetoric that’s popular in America right now?

KING: I think if we’d abolished the IRS back when I first advocated it, he wouldn’t have a target for his airplane. And I’m still for abolishing the IRS, I’ve been for it for thirty years and I’m for a national sales tax. [...] It’s sad the incident in Texas happened, but by the same token, it’s an agency that is unnecessary and when the day comes when that is over and we abolish the IRS, it’s going to be a happy day for America.

TP: So some of his grievances were legitimate?

KING: I don’t know if his grievances were legitimate, I’ve read part of the material. I can tell you I’ve been audited by the IRS and I’ve had the sense of ‘why is the IRS in my kitchen.’ Why do they have their thumb in the middle of my back. … It is intrusive and we can do a better job without them entirely.

Here is why the GOP is so against the health care bill. Health care has been a corner stone issue of the Democratic platform for years. When they control everything they try to get reform through.

Now take the Republicans. Abolshing the IRS has been one of their big issues for years, but when have they actually tried? They had control of the entire government for most of the last decade and not once did they try this. It’s like banning abortion – they never try and most likely never will.

The GOP is the party of rhetoric, and again we have someone in the GOP justifying a horrific attack against Americans to justify the very beliefs they never even act on. It’s the same as when abortion doctors get murdered.

Democrats Break GOP Filibuster On Jobs Bill

Posted 2/22/10 at 7:34pm by jamie

Without the help of Ben Nelson, Democrats were able to break the GOP filibuster on the jobs bill with the help of Kit Bond, George Voinovich, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe and Scott Brown.

The final vote was 62-30, with Frank Lautenberg missing the vote because of his chemo.

As Aravosis points out, Conservatives are on fire going after Brown. It appears the honeymoon is officially over:

it wasn't just the people of MA who put you where you are. Next time you vote like that I expect to be kissed first!

Well, I guess we worked our tails off to get another RINO elected. I'm so disappointed in Scott Brown

Hey, Massachusetts! How do you like Scott Specter?

You dont understand - We Americans Had Drawn A Line In The Sand With @scottbrownma - Its All Gone Now. #traitor

Michael Savage totally called it... @SCOTTBROWNMA sucks!

Read more of the angry tweets at AmericaBLOG.

Adding…. This bill is mostly nothing but tax breaks for small business. Again we see a large number of Republicans voting against reducing taxes. What platform do they have now besides being the party of no?
