guantanamo prison

Let’s Do Some Finger Pointing

I am really curious to hear how the wingnuts spin this one:

Two of the four leaders allegedly behind the al Qaeda plot to blow up a Northwest Airlines passenger jet over Detroit were released by the U.S. from the Guantanamo prison in November, 2007, according to American officials and Department of Defense documents. Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the Northwest bombing in a Monday statement that vowed more attacks on Americans.

American officials agreed to send the two terrorists from Guantanamo to Saudi Arabia where they entered into an "art therapy rehabilitation program" and were set free, according to U.S. and Saudi officials.

Released from Gitmo under Bush/Cheney. Well the explains why Cheney has been eerily silent about the events of Christmas day.

Records Lost For Osama's Driver

Sounds kind of convenient:

The US military has lost a year's worth of records describing the Guantanamo confinement of Osama bin Laden's driver, a prosecutor said at the Yemeni captive's war court hearing.

Lawyers for the driver, Salim Ahmed Hamdan, asked for the records to support their argument that prolonged isolation and harassment at the Guantanamo prison have mentally impaired him and could affect his ability to aid in his defence against war crimes charges.

"All known records have been produced with the exception of the 2002 Gitmo (A nickname for Guantanamo Bay) records," one of the prosecutors, Navy Lieutenant Commodore Timothy Stone, told the court. "They can't find it."

I would check in the same location as the waterboarding video tapes. It's a damn good chance you will find them there.

From Gitmo To NATO

Wow - here is another great pick by the Bush White House:

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Gen. Bantz Craddock, the chief of U.S. Southern Command who oversees the controversial Guantanamo prison, is to succeed Gen. James Jones as NATO's top commander of operations, the alliance said on Friday.

Craddock will replace Jones as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) at a date yet to be determined, NATO said in a statement released in Brussels after President George W. Bush proposed Craddock for the post.

"The NATO Defense Planning Committee, which takes this decision, agreed but also expressed to General Jones, in the name of NATO governments, their gratitude for his distinguished service," it said.

Jones, a U.S. Marine, became SACEUR based in Mons, southern Belgium, in 2003 and had been widely expected to end his tour by the end of the year.

Yeah - he can help get all the other countries to support torture and maybe do away with that pesky Geneva Convention. It should be interesting to hear Wesley Clarke talk about this.
