Looks Like Bipartisanship Is Over

Posted 3/27/10 at 3:22pm by jamie

Way to go Mr. President:

Faced with an unprecedented level of obstruction in the Senate, the President announced his intention to recess appoint fifteen nominees to fill critical administration posts. While the President respects the critical role the Senate plays in the appointment process, he was no longer willing to let another month go by with key economic positions unfilled, especially at a time when our country is recovering from the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

Many of these fifteen individuals have enjoyed broad bipartisan support, but have found their confirmation votes delayed for reasons that have nothing to do with their qualifications. It has more to do with an obstruction-at-all-costs mentality that we’ve been faced with since the President came into office. Because of political posturing, these fifteen appointees have waited an average of 214 days for Senate confirmation.

And I guarantee there will be wingnuts this week calling this unconstitutional, despite Bush doing the exact same thing and the Constitution allowing it.

Reid’s Duh Moment

Posted 1/14/10 at 9:15am by jamie

From TPM:

"As I look back it was a waste of time dealing with [Snowe]," Reid is quoted as saying about the White House in a forthcoming New York Times Magazine piece, "because she had no intention of ever working anything out."

I really wonder if Harry Reid actually knows how politics work. Arlen Specter would have been a great indicator. He sided with the Democrats on the stimulus and the Republicans decided to make an example out of him, basically forcing him out of the party. I guarantee this was in the mind of Snowe during the health care debate. She knew that if she backed the plan then the Republicans would start forcing her out of the party and might even try to get someone to primary her.

Sadly, in Washington, they are so drowned in politics that they don’t realize every decision is based upon politics. That politics isn’t the politics for the future, but rather the politics for personal gain and viability. To those of us watching at home, it is painfully obvious.

Has Michele Bachmann’s Census War Backfired?

Posted 1/5/10 at 8:19am by jamie

Last week I posted a list of states slated to gain and lose congressional seats in the upcoming election. While doing that post, my inner geek had me focusing on the numbers and I totally missed this part:

Minnesota (-1): Open seat in 2010; state Senate 46 D, 21 R; state House 87 D, 47 R

Luckily TPM picked up on that loss and is now wondering if that’s why Michele Bachmann has stopped her anti-census talk:

The state of Minnesota could be on the verge of losing a House seat after 2010 -- and interestingly enough, it's been a while since we heard Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) talk about refusing to participate in the Census.

Last year, Bachmann repeatedly said she would defy the Census by not completely filling out the information on the forms, but would instead only give the number of people in her household. She said that Census data was used to conduct the 1940's Japanese-American internment, and warned that the government was seeking to gather information about people's mental health. But as far as we can tell, her last anti-Census public statement was in August.

Orly Taitz Calls For Followers To “Bare Arms”

Posted 12/29/09 at 7:48am by jamie

Wow the birther queen is crazier than we thought:

What is the real intention of this Kenyan, Indonesian communist usurper? Is it to provide security for us or to destroy our security? Judge for yourself.

Seeing targeted destruction of our economy, our security, dissipation of American jobs, massive corruption in the Government, Congress Department of Justice and Judiciary, it might be time to start rallies and protests using our second amendment right to bare arms and organise in militias.

I have “bare arms” right now since I am wearing a tank top. But seriously – why is this lady allowed to walk free? She might not be the epitome of a right wing extremist, but she is damn close.

$20,000

Posted 10/13/09 at 12:08pm by jamie

That’s how much birther attorney Orly Taitz has been fined by a judge:

Reached on her cell phone by TPMmuckraker and informed of the $20,000 fine imposed on her by a federal judge this morning, Birther attorney Orly Taitz responded, first, with laughter.

"So he didn't recuse himself?" Taitz asked, after letting out an extended, nervous-sounding chuckle.

And to make matters even more fun, Taitz is saying she has no intention of paying the fine:

Still defiant after months of legal wrangling and, by our count, three written denunciations by federal district court Judge Clay Land, Taitz said she had absolutely no plans to pay the $20,000 fine.

"Are you kidding? Of course not," she said, asked whether she planned to send a check. "This is a form of intimidation."

Instead Taitz is planning on filing yet another response. Hopefully in 30 days we will see this nut job locked up for contempt, though she has been a great mascot of the birther movement – proving just how fucking crazy they all are.

How The Stimulus Should Proceed

Posted 1/28/09 at 9:14am by jamie

We are rapidly losing jobs. The economy is on the brink. This week has been no better, yet Republican leadership continues to play games with the stimulus bill. Here’s how the Democrats need to proceed on it.

The stimulus package has strong public support, while the Republican leaders opposing it have some of the lowest approval ratings. So the Democrats should place all the concessions they made to appease Republicans right back in the bill and bring it up for a vote. Then they need to get every surrogate out to the networks explaining to the American people that they were trying to work with Republicans, but Republicans had no intention of seeing this bill passed. All of this went down while hundreds of thousands of Americans lost their jobs.

Elections have consequences and the people spoke during the last two election cycles by denouncing Republican ideas. It’s time for the Democrats to start listening to the people and recognize their new found power, instead of bowing to the highly unpopular Republicans.

The American electorate is smart, and they will see that the Republicans are trying to block the salvation of our economy. The people were able to see through the Republicans in the last session of Congress. We had the worst approved Congress in our nation’s history, yet the people voted overwhelmingly to give more control to the party of power. That means they knew the Republicans were the taint, and if the Democrats do the right thing now then they will continue to see that taint and give the Democrats even more power in 2010. It’s not that complicated. Stop acting like a bunch of "friends” and “good ol’ boys” up there on Capital Hill and act like leaders.

Problem Solved?

Last night President (shiver) Obama ordered the prosecutors at Gitmo to halt all cases for 120 days. Most likely this is so he can figure out what to do with the inmates and finally close down the black eye of the beacon of freedom.

One of the big arguments about Obama closing down Gitmo is what to do with all the inmates. Well we might have a solution now:

Switzerland is ready to consider taking in detainees from the U.S. prison for terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba if that helps to shut it down, the Swiss government said on Wednesday.

"For Switzerland, the detention of people in Guantanamo is in conflict with international law. Switzerland is ready to consider how it can contribute to the solution of the Guantanamo problem," the government said in a statement.

Switzerland said it welcomed the expressed intention of U.S. President Barack Obama to close the prison and would investigate security and legal implications of possibly taking in detainees. About 255 men are still held there.

Help from the world. That’s something we haven’t seen in a very long time. It’s a sign of the change that is coming and the hope and optimism Obama has given the world. Of course I got a better idea for the detainees. Send them to live with Bush and Cheney.

McCain's Attempt To Put Out The Fire

Posted 10/11/08 at 8:57am by jamie

After watching John McCain try to calm down his crowds yesterday, I ended up having some reservations. I'm not saying McCain isn't serious about what he is saying, but I am now wondering if he is in control of his campaign. His campaign aides were out just a couple hours before supporting the violent calls from McCain/Palin crowds and Palin herself continued the attacks yesterday. The top of the ticket is in charge of the campaign, which is John McCain. So is he saying he doesn't have control of his campaign? If so that sounds an awful lot like Bush and his administration.

There is a chance though that McCain was just trying to save face yesterday and has no intention of calming the fires. Perhaps McCain did this because he is so much like George Bush now in the sense that Republican incumbents up for re-election are refusing to be seen on the trail with him now.

The next few days should be interesting to watch and see how all this takes hold. I'm sure a lot of hard core Republicans are pissed with McCain, so he will have to stop that bleeding. I also don't see what McCain did helping him with Independents, so the polls could quickly open up more in Obama's favor, in which case we would probably see McCain trying to reignite the fires.

Stop The Damn Lying!

Posted 3/23/08 at 9:39am by jamie

Hillary has constantly talked about her Bosnia trip as First Lady and "landing under sniper fire". She started that months ago and continued it this week:

I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base. But it was a moment of great pride for me to visit our troops, not only in our main base as Tuzla, but also at two outposts where they were serving in so many capacities to deactivate and remove landmines, to hunt and seek out those who had not complied with the Dayton Accords and put down their arms, and to build relationships with the people that might lead to a peace for them and their children.

Now let's look at that "sniper fire" they landed under:

If by "sniper fire" you mean greeted with a large reception and hugged by children, then ok, I can buy it. But that isn't the intention. The intention is to lie and deceive the American people, and that can not be tolerated.

I am seriously considering what will happen if Hillary does some how cheat Obama out of the nomination. If that happens, I just may find myself campaigning for Ralph Nader. Between these common lies and Bill pulling out right wing smears of attacking Obama as being "not loving America", I have had enough of them.

Letters Not Linked To Times Square Bombing

Posted 3/7/08 at 9:20am by jamie

Yesterday the wingnuts were quick to pin the blame of the Times Square bombing on the "anti-war left". Now news comes out that the "anti-war" letters received by members of Congress yesterday was not connected to the bombing:

There's apparently no link between the bombing of an military recruiting station in New York's Times Square and letters sent to Congress saying "We did it," law enforcement officials said Friday.

The lengthy anti-war letters - which arrived with photos of a man standing in front of the recruiting office before it was damaged - contained no threats and were sent to as many as 100 members of Congress, officials said.

Laura Eimiller, an FBI spokeswoman in Los Angeles, said an individual was questioned there about the letters to Congress and "there is no evidence linking the letters, which contained no threat, to the bombing.

I have a couple of thoughts on this. First, what are the odds that this is some right wing whacko trying to make the Democrats look bad? We already have the case of one whack job sending fake anthrax letters to people on the left, and that person was basically coddled by people like Malkin.

Something else I have been thinking about since this news broke 24 hours ago. No one is calling it terrorism yet. In Iraq they release who did a bombing, and in some cases their medical health, within hours of a bombing. So in a country like Iraq they can quickly identify people, yet here, with all our eavesdropping, we have no idea?

Bush Trying To Rape The Land Before Leaving Office

Posted 1/15/08 at 5:50pm by jamie

This is from a press release that went out this afternoon from The Heritage Forests Campaign:

The Bush administration today released documents announcing its intention to remove protections for more than six million acres of roadless areas in the national forests of Idaho. Idaho’s roadless backcountry areas are some of the nation’s last intact national forests and this proposal would open the door to their development by corporate special interests.

[SNIP]

“Last year, a federal judge struck down the Bush administration's attempt to remove protections for our nation’s wild forests. Today, 50 million acres of roadless national forests, in all states except Alaska, are protected from road construction and logging. Now, under the cover of the hectic holiday season, the administration is trying to open the door to new development in the roadless backcountry of Idaho’s national forests.

Destroying Evidence

Posted 12/7/07 at 11:35am by jamie

That is exactly what the CIA has done:

The CIA destroyed videotapes it made in 2002 of two top terror suspects because it was afraid that keeping them "posed a security risk," Director Michael Hayden has told agency employees.

Hayden's revelation to the CIA employees became public Thursday and it caused a commotion on Capitol Hill where members of the Senate Intelligence Committee immediately vowed to conduct a thorough review. A leading human rights group voiced alarm about it.

In his message to agency workers, Hayden said that House and Senate intelligence committee leaders had been informed of the existence of the tapes and the CIA's intention to destroy them to protect the identities of the questioners. He also said the CIA's internal watchdog watched the tapes in 2003 and verified that the interrogation practices were legal. Hayden said the tapes were destroyed three years after the 2002 interrogations.

If you or me destroyed evidence we would face criminal charges. Some how I doubt that will be the case. In our corrupt capital, the rule of law takes the backseat to everything else.

As The Party Crumbles

Posted 10/19/07 at 3:57pm by jamie

Time for the RNC to find a new head:

Mel Martinez, the public face of the Republican National Committee as its general chairman, announced he was stepping down from his post on Friday after serving only 10 months.

"I believe that our future as a party and nation is bright and I have every intention of continuing to fight for our president, our party and our candidates," the Florida senator said in a statement.

His departure was abrupt and his job will not be filled. Martinez wasn't expected to step down until a Republican presidential nominee was selected. The earliest that could occur is February.

Martinez said he was relinquishing the job to spend more time focusing on his constituents and because the RNC had achieved the objective he set when he assumed the job in January.

What objective? Maybe that objective was to shun Latinos and African Americans. Yeah - mission accomplished there.

Or perhaps it was to totally obstruct the Senate. Yup - another big plus on their score card. The American people really like that too </sarcasm>

So who can we find to replace Martinez? I know! Karl Rove. Put turd blossom in charge of the shitty party.

New warning to men over sex consent

Posted 3/7/06 at 10:28am by Anonymous (not verified)

Theres an interesyting debate opened up here in the UK (see report from Yahoo News below).  It is over guidelines and proposed changes to the law regarding rape. The guidelines say that a man must get consent from a woman prior to having sex. This is due to the increase in cases where women have been blind drunk nad the very next day woke up and gone to the police to say she was raped. There have been many cases that have been thrown out of court due to it basically being the woman decided she did not like the guy she had sex with or it's a way of a married woman having an excuse for her husband... yes this does happen a lot.

Now, here's the thing, your at a club, you start chatting to a girl, you get a bit horny with em as they do in return, you have to get consent to have sex..WTF!. Should we all carry a contract in our pockets... i think not. The only view I have on this is: If a woman seems very drunk and possibly does not know what she is doing (i know, no need to comment on that) then just don't have sex with her. It's an interesting debate

What do you think?

Today's Big Speech Ignored By The News Networks

Posted 1/16/06 at 7:54pm by jamie

In a speech ignored by cable news networks today, Al Gore sounds the alarm
about our constitution being in crisis and the dangers our nation faces by an
executive branch that is out of control and power hungry. Excerpts follow:

[..]

During the period when this eavesdropping was still secret, the President
went out of his way to reassure the American people on more than one
occasion that, of course, judicial permission is required for any government
spying on American citizens and that, of course, these constitutional
safeguards were still in place.

But surprisingly, the President's soothing statements turned out to be
false. Moreover, as soon as this massive domestic spying program was
uncovered by the press, the President not only confirmed that the story was
true, but also declared that he has no intention of bringing these wholesale
invasions of privacy to an end.

[..]

A president who breaks the law is a threat to the very structure of our
government. Our Founding Fathers were adamant that they had established a
government of laws and not men. Indeed, they recognized that the structure
of government they had enshrined in our Constitution - our system of checks
and balances - was designed with a central purpose of ensuring that it would
govern through the rule of law. As John Adams said: "The executive shall
never exercise the legislative and judicial powers, or either of them, to
the end that it may be a government of laws and not of men."
