An Idea Of Awesomeness Magnitude

Posted 6/30/10 at 9:52am by jamie

I think this is one of the best ideas I have ever heard out of Congress:

It seems that Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) would agree, perpetual war is making you poor.

To begin rectifying the situation, he's joined with Congressman Alan Grayson (D-FL) in co-sponsoring the "War is Making You Poor Act," which would limit defense spending to $548.9 billion: the exact figure alloted in the fiscal year 2011 budget.

The act also seeks to utilize an additional $159.3 billion set aside for "discretionary" operations abroad to relieve the full federal income tax burden on every American's first $35,000 earned per year, or up to $70,000 per year for married couples.

According to Detroit publication MLive, Conyers, who chairs the powerful House Committee on the Judiciary, is adding his name to the roster of support.

"I believe that the thing we need to do is to take that $159 billion that the President has set aside – we’re not saying he has to stop the war, we’re not giving a cut-off date for the war – we’re simply saying you need to fund that out of the base budget of $549 billion," Grayson said of his bill. "And we take 90 percent of that and give it back to the American people."

John Conyers Statement On The Senate Bill

Posted 12/22/09 at 7:45am by jamie

Like I have been saying – the survival of health care out of conference is anything but certain:

“Last night’s vote in the Senate should be applauded for what it was:
an affirmative statement by that body that comprehensive health care reform legislation should not be held captive any longer by a select few.” “As this legislation moves towards its constitutionally mandated reconciliation with the House of Representatives, I also want to make it clear that, in my mind, this bill does not adequately address many of the problems that plague our current system. Without material changes, this legislation will be reform in name only.”

“In order to pass the House of Representatives, a final health care bill must provide universal affordability and competition to the American people. Additionally, it should be financed by those with the ability to pay and not by working class Americans lucky enough to receive quality health coverage through their employers.”

“I supported the House bill because it included serious provisions aimed at helping individuals who currently cannot afford to purchase health care by providing subsidies and expanding Medicaid to 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. The Senate bill passed last night does not ensure this same level of affordability; there are fewer subsidies and the expansion of Medicaid is not as extensive.”

You can read on here.

Dave Dayen summed up what Conyers wants rather nicely:

• Affordability: Conyers argues for more generous subsidies to make health insurance affordable.

John Conyers Wife Convicted Of Conspiracy To Commit Bribery

Posted 6/26/09 at 10:52am by jamie

We all knew this was coming, but now its official:

Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Monica Conyers pleaded guilty this morning to conspiring to commit bribery and is free on personal bond.

U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn said, "The defendant now stands convicted."

The one count of conspiring to commit bribery is punishable for up to five years in prison.

[SNIP]

Conyers, the wife of powerful Democratic congressman U.S. Rep. John Conyers, appeared before Cohn to answer charges in connection with the wide-ranging probe of wrongdoing at Detroit city hall.

She has long been under suspicion in the Synagro bribery probe, not least because she had been a vocal opponent of the contract before suddenly switching her sentiments. She became the deciding voice in the city council’s 5-4 vote to approve the sludge-hauling deal in November 2007.

A crook is a crook, it doesn’t matter if they are a D or a R. I’m glad justice caught up with her.

BREAKING: Rove And Miers Will Give Depositions

Posted 3/4/09 at 6:53pm by jamie

Didn’t expect this:

Former White House political adviser Karl Rove and counsel Harriet Miers have agreed to face questions from Congress about allegations of improper political influence in the Justice Department, the House Judiciary Committee announced Wednesday.

Both will give depositions to investigators from the committee, and claims of privilege will be "significantly limited," according to a statement from the committee.

Rove and Miers had been resisting congressional subpoenas about the matter since the House Judiciary Committee began trying to force Miers to testify in 2006. The Bush White House resisted, claiming she could not be compelled to appear. But a federal judge in Washington ruled that the former Bush administration officials had no grounds to invoke executive privilege in the case.

The committee, led by Rep. John Conyers, D-Michigan, has been investigating claims that Rove and his White House allies fired U.S. attorneys for political reasons and prosecuted officials whom they saw as opponents. Conyers called the agreement "a victory for the separation of powers and congressional oversight."

I can only guess they got some legal advice that made them decide it’s time to follow the law.

Healthcare Discussion On The Rise

Posted 11/26/08 at 9:15am by jamie

healthcare Change is awesome! The Obama transition team has launched a section on change.gov dedicated to healthcare reform. There are already close to 1,200 comments on it. Imagine a government letting people voice their opinion? I thought that was America’s principal, but wasn’t so sure after the last eight years. Well it looks like it may be our principal again.

But that isn’t all. John Conyers is working on a single payer healthcare package and now has a page dedicated to informing the public about it.

A core belief of the Democratic Party is starting to see life, and could become reality. How many times has that happened for the Republicans?

We Need A Criminal Investigation Of The AP

Posted 11/1/08 at 1:09pm by jamie

Not really, but if this happened to John McCain the right would be screaming for just that:

Barack Obama's aunt, a Kenyan woman who has been quietly living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned.

Zeituni Onyango, 56, referred to as "Aunti Zeituni" in Obama's memoir, was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP late Friday. This person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to discuss Onyango's case.

Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one of them a federal law enforcement official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release.

Obama has already denied knowing her status and we have no reason to not believe him. But the most important part here is that federal employees violated the law to disclose this information. John Conyers is pissed about it and already firing off a letter to Chertoff. Hopefully this will lead to an investigation. Again - this is the proper way to handle it. The right always goes after the media when there is a leak, but on this story they are circling the wagons around the media. Fucking hypocrites to the end.

Time For Some Catch-Up

Posted 6/13/07 at 1:35pm by jamie

I swear there are just not enough hours in the day, so let me do a quick catch up.

First we have the Senate Judiciary Committee issuing a subpoena to former Rove aide Sara Taylor, while the House Judiciary Committee is issuing one to Harriet Meirs. Regarding this matter, John Conyers said, "Let me be clear: this subpoena is not a request, it is a demand on behalf of the American people for the White House...to help us answer the questions that remain".

Next up we find out that even with the "surge", we still don't have enough troops in Iraq and might need yet another surge. This came from Lt. Gen. Martin Dempsey as he was testifying before the House yesterday. Oh and let's remember that this was yesterday, before our next item of:

In the early morning hours Sunni insurgents blew up the Askariya Shrine. This is the same shrine that was blown up last year and caused the sectarian violence to explode. Before al-Maliki could issue the new "indefinite curfews", arsonists set fire to a Sunni mosque in western Baghdad. a Shiite shrine was blown up north of Baghdad and two Sunni mosques were bombed south of Baghdad.

To make matters even worse, al-Sadr and his bloc of 30 members suspended its membership in Iraq's parliament. Yes al-Sadr is a bad guy, but now he is that much worse.

Hey John McCain - is this still like a stroll in any American town? What say you Joe Lieberman or Mike Pence?

The Email Scandal Grows

Posted 4/13/07 at 10:07am by jamie

Now reports are saying that 4 years of Rove email may be missing:

A lawyer for the Republican National Committee told congressional staff members yesterday that the RNC is missing at least four years' worth of e-mail from White House senior adviser Karl Rove that is being sought as part of investigations into the Bush administration, according to the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

GOP officials took issue with Rep. Henry Waxman's account of the briefing and said they still hope to find the e-mail as they conduct forensic work on their computer equipment. But they acknowledged that they took action to prevent Rove -- and Rove alone among the two dozen or so White House officials with RNC accounts -- from deleting his e-mails from the RNC server. Waxman (D-Calif.) said he was told the RNC made that move in 2005.

In a letter to Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, Waxman said the RNC lawyer, Rob Kelner, also raised the possibility that Rove had personally deleted the missing e-mails, all dating back to before 2005. GOP officials said Kelner was merely speaking hypothetically about why e-mail might be missing for any staffer and not referring to Rove in particular.

That is an awful lot, but the White House feels that they don't even have to turn over emails on RNC accounts, as Think Progress notes:

Well Imagine That! (updated)

Posted 3/20/07 at 3:10pm by jamie

(updated and bumped)

The Muckraker has uncovered a gem from the DOJ document dump:

Four months after the San Diego United States Attorney's office launched an investigation into whether he had accepted bribes from defense contractors, and little more than a month before he pled guilty to those charges, Rep. Duke Cunningham (R-CA) signed on to a letter criticizing U.S. Attorney Carol Lam's "lax" handling of immigration crimes.

Well Duke, why do you think it was "lax"? Could it have something to do with the fact she had to investigate all YOUR corruption?

This sure sounds like one of possibly many smoking guns to come out over the next few days. Raw Story has also learned that John Conyers is seeking subpoenas for Rove, Miers and others. This story is far from over.

UPDATE:

Think Progress has this little gem:

White House won’t allow Rove, Miers testimony. MSNBC’s Mike Viquiera: “Fred Fielding, he’s the White House counsel, he was just here meeting with the House Judiciary Committee. He made the following offer to the Congress, both House and Senate. He said Rove and Harriet Miers would be offered to the committees for their testimony in the Alberto Gonzales prosecutors scandal. However, it would be unsworn testimony, not under oath, behind closed doors, and no transcript would be permitted. Now, that is not what Congress is looking for.”

Now if there is no wrong-doing here, then why such restrictions? Sounds like the White House is planning on Rove and Miers lying to Congress. That further proves this administration has total disgregard for oversight.

Progress in the Case of the Fired Prosecutors

Posted 3/2/07 at 1:00pm by jamie

Next week the House will hold hearings on the firing of federal prosecutors. John Conyers issued the first subpoenas since the Democrats took over in this case. He subpoenaed the fired prosecutors to testify before the Judiciary Committee, which Conyers chairs. It has also come out now that Heather Wilson and Pete Domenci were the two New Mexico congressmembers that pushed one of the fired prosecutors to take action against a Democrat last fall:

Sen. Pete Domenici and Rep. Heather Wilson of New Mexico pressured the U.S. attorney in their state to speed up indictments in a federal corruption investigation that involved at least one former Democratic state senator, according to two people familiar with the contacts.

House Democrats Showing Spine

Posted 3/16/06 at 8:05pm by jamie

While Senate Democrats tip-toe around Feingold's censure resolution, a group of Democrats in the House are taking action:

32 US House Representatives have signed on as sponsors or co-sponsors of H. Res 635, which would create a Select Committee to look into the grounds for recommending President Bush’s impeachment, Atlanta Progressive News has learned.

Their co-sponsorships of H. Res 635 come on the heels of reports that US Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) will support US Senator Russ Feingold’s (D-WI) bill, S. Res 398, to censure President Bush.

This is a lot more harsh than censorship and already gaining great support. The resolution (H. Res 635) was introduced by John Conyers. Now can we get the Democrats in Senate to show the spine that these 32 members of the House have shown?

Censure Bush

Posted 3/12/06 at 7:51pm by jamie

I got to say this is big. I said in my Sunday Line Up post that "This Week" looked promising and indeed it was:

In an exclusive interview on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold called on the Senate to publicly admonish President Bush for approving domestic wiretaps on American citizens without first seeking a legally required court order.

"This conduct is right in the strike zone of the concept of high crimes and misdemeanors," said Feingold, D-Wis., a three-term senator and potential presidential contender.

He said President Bush had, "openly and almost thumbing his nose at the American people," continued the NSA domestic wiretap program.

This is the boldest step anyone has done in this Senate to try and write the wrongs of Bush. John Conyers introduced motions of censure last December but the Republican stronghold is to great on the House to get it to move anywhere. This could be the start of something big. You can view the interview at Crooks and Liars, and view the entire transcript at Raw Story. Just to mention, Frist followed up with trying to play the terrorism card again. True Frist is one of the very few who also supported Dubai taking over our ports.

Bush's Approval Rating Continues To Fall

Posted 1/27/06 at 2:01pm by jamie

Bush is down to a 37% approval rating in the latest poll released by
CBS
and the New York Times
. 7 out of 10 respondents also are concerned the
deficit will grow by the end of Bush's Presidency. It will be interesting to see
what the numbers do next week after the State of the Union Address.

Rep. John Conyers says "If
that was a bounce then the ball needs some air
