The Republican Plan Backwards

Posted 2/6/12 at 10:43am by jamie

John Boehner is here, in his district today, to unveil the Republican jobs plan:

U.S. House Speaker John Boehner, R-West Chester Twp., will talk at ThyssenKrupp Bilstein of America Inc. on Monday about the U.S. House Republicans’ jobs plan.

This is the second time a major Republican politician has promoted their jobs plans at ThyssenKrupp, a manufacturer of shock absorbers for automobiles. Ohio Gov. John Kasich visited the plant in June to promote JobsOhio, the nonprofit agency formed in 2011 responsible for the state’s job creation efforts.

While it's great that ThyssenKrupp is doing well, this area is still bleeding jobs at a record pace:

The news also came Friday that the Liz Claiborne distribution facility in West Chester Twp. will close Sept. 1, affecting 365 jobs.

The mass layoff notice is the fourth released for Butler County in 2012 by Ohio Department of Job and Family Services’ Office of Workforce Development. Job losses announced this year total 548 between Diversapack of Monroe, Liz Claiborne and Schneider Logistics Inc. of West Chester Twp.

Xanterra Parks & Resorts said last month it lost its contract to manage Hueston Woods Lodge in College Corner, but the 93 employees were offered their jobs with the new manager.

Mohawk Fine Papers of Hamilton closed in January, cutting another 137 jobs. SMART Papers of Hamilton will have cut more than 200 jobs if it closes this month. Pella Corp. of Fairfield also said in 2010 it would eliminate 198 jobs when it closes in 2012, but 40 jobs have already been shed by the company through attrition.

Then we got the typical plan of the GOP:

2012 Looking Good So Far For Job Numbers

Posted 1/5/12 at 8:59am by jamie

Let's hope this keeps up:

The news is all good for the jobs market so far in 2012: Separate reports Thursday showed a surge in private-sector job creation, a sharp drop in weekly unemployment claims and planned layoffs at their lowest level in six months.

Though the December data flowing in is sensitive to seasonal revisions, the trend is moving in the right direction.

Private-sector jobs surged by 325,000, according to ADP and Macroeconomic Advisors, while the government said weekly jobless claims fell 15,000 to 372,000 — still at an elevated level but consistent with recent data showing a consistent if grudging turnaround.

Goods-producing businesses created 176,000 positions in the month, according to ADP's payrolls count, while the goods-producing sector rose 52,000 and manufacturing increased 22,000.

Of course we aren't in the clear yet. Europe is still very much in trouble and a sudden collapse there will send world markets back into chaos, which will translate into layoffs again. Everything is tied to that global economy and we got to keep an eye on that.

But if we keep trending this way then jobs will become a smaller issue by the time we hit the general election. Even if unemployment is still around 7% by then, as long as it's moving down I doubt that voters would want to replace President Obama with someone else who might reverse that flow.

Basically out economy is still very fragile and can easily be sent back into chaos. Keeping the ripples out right now is very important and a change at Pennsylvania Avenue is a rather large ripple. Hopefully Democrats will seize on these numbers and show people that progress is being made on repairing the Bush economy that President Obama inherited, which was the worst economy since the Great Depression.

Boehner The Bar Fly

Posted 6/30/10 at 1:38pm by jamie

That according to Joe Scarborough:

From The Huffington Post:

"I hear it on the Hill, I'm sure you hear it on the Hill all the time, it's not reported, but so many Republicans tell me this is a guy that is not the hardest worker in the world," said Scarborough on Wednesday's edition of Morning Joe. "Every Republican I talk to says John Boehner, by 5 or 6 o'clock at night, you can see him at bars. He is not a hard worker."

And Boehner’s office doesn’t really seem to be denying it either:

"Boehner grew up with 11 brothers and sisters, and his dad owned a bar, but the only time he's 'around town' these days is to raise money for our House Republican team. Thus far this year, he's headlined more than 230 events and raised about $27 million. And that's just the beginning."

As a person represented by John Boehner, I have a serious problem with this. Our county (and John’s) is in serious financial trouble. Our sheriff’s office just did some major layoffs, and now we got 4 on duty at any given time to cover a huge area. All these troubles go on and yet our representative seems oblivious to them.

Jobless Claims Drop To Lowest Levels Since January

Some good news on the jobs front:

New applications for U.S. jobless benefits plunged to the lowest level in 14 weeks, a possible sign that the massive wave of layoffs has peaked. Still, the number of unemployed Americans getting benefits climbed to a new record.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that the number newly laid off workers applying for benefits dropped to 601,000 last week. That was far better than the rise to 635,000 claims that economists expected.

But the total number of people receiving jobless benefits climbed to 6.35 million, a 14th straight record.

That last sentence is what Drudge is focusing on though:

decho

Funny how Drudge parses headlines like that. We get good news that is even better than economists expected, so Drudge finds the bad data in the article and promotes that, even though that really isn’t news. For the 14 weeks we have been able to use that same headline.

The Republicans Really Don’t Get It

Posted 2/8/09 at 10:17am by jamie

John Ensign just said on Meet the Press that the states aren’t hurting and there won’t be any teacher or firefighter layoffs. That statement right there should qualify right up there with “the foundation of our economy is strong”. The Republicans are clueless to what is happening in the economy and instead want ways to make the rich get richer. This should amount to treason.

Not Backing Down

golden_parachute1 NY Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has been at the front of the battle when it comes to CEOs receiving their golden parachutes, while their companies lay off and ask for government handouts, and he isn’t backing down at all:

Calling the layoffs of 53,000 people "disturbing," Cuomo says top executives shouldn't get bonuses while investors, taxpayers and employees suffer.

Cuomo adds that other companies should consider doing the same, including American International Group, which has received billions of federal bailout dollars.

This is how government should intervene with business. Republicans think that this is “hindering the free market”, but it is really providing fairness to all involved. So many of these companies give out executive bonuses in the multi-million dollar range. Just think of how many salaries that would cover.

Yahoo Preparing For Layoffs

Tech burst 2.0 for Yahoo:

Battered by slow revenue growth and the popularity of social networking Web sites, Yahoo Inc. is poised to lay off hundreds of workers, according to published reports.
more stories like this

The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal have both reported on the slumping Internet icon's cost-cutting plans, citing people familiar with the matter.

Precisely how many of Yahoo's roughly 14,000 employees will lose their jobs hasn't been determined, the newspapers said. A final decision could be announced Jan. 29 when Yahoo executives are scheduled to review the Sunnyvale-based company's fourth-quarter results.

Being in the tech industry I have been amazed at how much Yahoo has gone down hill. It's not so much that they are losing in the product race, but rather the quality of products they have out there. Almost all Yahoo products have flaws to them and they just seem to not care about it.
