Web Hosting Censorship

Posted 1/16/08 at 4:34pm by jamie

One of the hardest parts of setting up your own blog is to find a decent company that will host it. Most of the software is free, but the computers the site is served on isn't. That's where your hosting company comes in. I have been with Lypha for two years now and don't have a single complaint. The couple of times my site has gone down they have been right on it. They give excellent service at an excellent price.

Another thing Lypha doesn't care about is when I use the occasional bad word. They don't censor my content. Now if I turned this into a full blown porn site, they might complain, but that is to be expected. This seems to be a big difference from Blue Host.

Blue Host is one of the recommended hosts for Wordpress, but that might be changing. I was reading a thread on the Wordpress forums today where a person had their site suspended by Blue Host because a commenter used the "f-word". They said it is against their "moral" policy. This is just the latest example of the anal-retentiveness of America today.

An Update On Lieberman's Server Woes

So I had some time to kill and decided to look into Joe's old hosting company, myhostcamp.com, which was where his site was originally hosted when his so called "hack" occurred. First we turn to a simple whois on that domain.

There are a couple of really interesting things in this whois. This is a "hosting company" that has chosen to hide their contact information in their domain registration file. Now I have done the same thing because I am an individual, but for an actual hosting company to do this is rather odd. Let me expand on that. I am hosted through Lypha and here is the whois information on them:

Just A Reminder

We are still in that touch and go period of propagation from changing hosting providers. Actually I was amazed because I propagated and changed over to the new server within 30 minutes and judging by the hits many others have too.

I got to say that this hosting company is so much better. Originally I was on GoDaddy and their support was awful and we kept getting times where the page would take 20 seconds to load. That was just unacceptable (true a part of that was the enormous growth we have been experiencing lately). This company, Lypha, offered an unbelievable package and their support has been great.

While investigating new hosting companies, I was a little distraught by some of the things I read about Lypha. I deal with servers on a regular basis so the technical end is right up my alley. The thing is that I set them up for people and hosting companies is not something I generally have to deal with. Well everything negative I read about Lypha has been proven wrong. I wonder at times how many of those reviews are actually the competition going out and trying a smear campaign because a company like Lypha is offering something they can't.

Now onto the future plans for IntoxiNation. Actually most of this is not future plans, but rather some things I wanted to do all along but couldn't because of the limitations of the old hosting provider.
