Does Matt Drudge Understand How Laws Are Made?

Posted 1/11/13 at 2:29pm by jamie

Here is a link Matt Drudge is pushing right now:

So now the President makes the laws? Well apparently so if you read the article it links to:

Despite launching a gun control agenda that threatens to disarm the American people, President Obama has signed a bill that would afford him armed Secret Service protection for life.

“The legislation, crafted by Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, rolls back a mid-1990s law that imposed a 10-year limit on Secret Service protection for former presidents. Bush would have been the first former commander in chief affected,” reports Yahoo News.

The new bill, which will cost American taxpayers millions of dollars, is a re-instatement of a 1965 law which will see presidents protected for life as well as their children up to age 16.

The irony of Obama seeking to surround himself with armed men for the rest of his life while simultaneously working to disarm the American people via a gun control agenda that is likely to be enforced via executive decree represents the height of hypocrisy.

This article is from the asinine conspiracy crazy Alex Jones site, so needless to say there is serious flaws in it, like the last paragraph I quoted.

Obama did not "seek" for this legislation. It was H.R. 6620, the Former Presidents Protection Act of 2012. The bill was introduced in the Republican lead House by a Republican representative. It passed both the House and Senate on voice votes, meaning it most likely carried a veto-proof majority.

Drudge Pushing Labor Report Conspiracy

Posted 10/29/12 at 5:57pm by jamie

Leave it to Matt Drudge to come up with some new conspiracy that all the little minions on the right can latch onto. Today's conspiracy involves the release of October's jobs numbers. Here's the headline he is pushing right now:

Mystery? Oh must be bad numbers and Obama is going to wait until after the election!!!

But let's look at the article that Drudge is linking.

“It is our intention that Friday will be business as usual,” said Carl Fillichio, a senior press advisor at Labor. Mr. Fillichio’s statement provided clarity to an earlier Labor statement that said the agency would assess how to handle data releases this week after the “weather emergency” is over.

Friday’s employment report will be the final read on the labor market ahead of the November elections. Initial reports that a delay was possible briefly fueled speculation that the jobs data, good or bad, might not be revealed until after the elections.

Federal government offices in Washington are closed Monday and may be shut again Tuesday due to the storm.

(emphasis added)

Apparently Matt Drudge hasn't realized that there is a hurricane battering the east coast right now and that has shut everything down. You really think he would notice though, considering right above that headline is this:

The Desperate Right

Posted 10/3/12 at 10:53am by jamie

It started yesterday with Matt Drudge. On the Drudge Report, Matt was touting a headline that a bombshell video was coming later that would destroy Obama. Twitter and the right wing blogosphere instantly jumped on it.

Well last night the video came. Tucker Carlson's Daily Caller released the video, with Hannity promoting it at the top of his show. Here it is:

The first problem is that this video was known about and even seen back in 2007 when he made this speech. They are trying to equate it to the Romney secret videos, but it is far, far from it.

And then right is trying to use this as the "black people are the racists" meme, but nowhere in Obama's speech did he mention race. Instead this is another failed attempt by the right wing noise machine to create a false controversy.

If this is all they got now, go ahead and cancel the debates and rest of the presidential race. Obama has won.

Drudge Goes Holy War!

Posted 9/15/12 at 12:25pm by jamie

Here's what you see right now on Drudge:

Get that? The feds are going after a Christian! Talk about bullshit headlines, this one takes the cake.

As you can guess, the filmmaker Drudge is talking about is the one behind that anti-Islam movie that has sparked all the outrage. Here's what the article says:

A Southern California filmmaker linked to an anti-Islamic movie inflaming protests across the Middle East was interviewed by federal probation officers at a Los Angeles sheriff's station but was not arrested or detained, authorities said early Saturday.

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, was interviewed at the station in his hometown of Cerritos, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Don Walker said.

Federal officials have said they were investigating the activities of Nakoula, who has been convicted of financial crimes. If the probation department determines Nakoula violated terms of his release, a judge could send him back to prison.

Walker said Nakoula traveled voluntarily in a squad car with deputies.

But why are the feds involved?

Is it Obama trying to squash the Christians?

Nope:

The probation department is reviewing the case of Nakoula, who was previously convicted on bank fraud charges and was banned from using computers or the Internet as part of his sentence. The review is aimed at learning whether Nakoula violated the terms of his five-year probation.

Karen Redmond, a spokeswoman for the administrative office of the U.S. courts, confirmed Friday the review is under way.

Pushing The Fear!

Posted 9/14/12 at 11:43am by jamie

In a week where al Qaeda has been back on the tip of everyone's tongue, comes news of bomb threats shutting down the University of Texas:

The University of Texas has evacuated all campus building after receiving phoned-in threat that multiple bombs had been placed on campus. Officials say no bombs have been found.

An alert posted shortly before 10 a.m. Friday says people on campus should immediately evacuate all buildings and "get as far away as possible."

And right on queue, here is Drudge:

So how does this get tied to al Qaeda? Well from the article that Drudge links:

The University of Texas is evacuating all of its buildings due to threats on campus after a caller claiming to be with al-Qaida said he placed bombs all over campus that would go off around 10 a.m. -- which has since passed.

Yeah, because al Qaeda always calls in threats before one of their attacks.

Sounds more like some lunatic out there trying to spark more outrage towards the Middle East.

The GOP's Materialistic Candidates

Posted 8/13/12 at 10:16am by jamie

In 2008 Sarah Palin was picked as a materialistic candidate. She had no real experience to become vice-President and the voters quickly saw that. But that didn't stop the right-wing pundits from trying to sell her to us with such qualifications as "she's hot" and "a great attack dog".

Fast-forward to 2012 and we are seeing a repeat. For example, here's a story that Matt Drudge is pushing:

Now back to 2008. That was a time when we heard the right got after Barack Obama for being "skinny", despite his body fat being estimated close to double that of Ryan's. Are appearences really what our Presidential selection process has come down to? Well Politico seems to think so:

Overlooked, understandably, in Saturday’s analysis and news that Rep. Paul Ryan will be Mitt Romney’s vice presidential nominee was one mostly — but not entirely — unimportant aspect: Paul Ryan is kind of hot.

Upon hearing the news of Ryan’s nomination, TMZ was quick to declare Ryan “the hottest vice presidential candidate ever.”

But looks shouldn't matter when it comes to President or vice-President. Instead the focus should be on experience and plans. The right seems to ignore this.

If Drudge Is Your News Source Then You Missed Today's Big Story

Posted 7/31/12 at 1:58pm by jamie

So many people rely on the Drudge Report as their go to news source. For those people they would most likely miss the biggest news story of the day:

Romney aide loses cool, curses at press in Poland

The traveling press secretary for Mitt Romney lost his cool and cursed at reporters who attempted to ask questions of the Republican presidential candidate in a public plaza near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw Tuesday.

After Romney paid his respects to Poland's war dead and shook hands with a small gathering of the nation's military veterans, the GOP contender walked approximately 100 yards away from the memorial as he chatted with Warsaw's mayor.

I'm not going to analyze this blowup. If you want tons of reaction, Memeorandum is the place to go right now with over 47 links to various blogs and news sites discussing this blowup.

What I want to talk about is Matt Drudge and his Drudge Report. Far too often we hear that he is the go to news source. If that's the case, then why is it that three hours after this story broke, Drudge has not mentioned it once? You can't say he hasn't heard the story, and if so then his title of king aggregator of news is highly over-stated.

The only logical explanation for this miss of a top news story is that it's bad for Romney. Drudge has been working hard this cycle to carry the torch for Mitt. When the primary was in full swing, Drudge would even ignore stories that made Romney look bad, but push every little story about his opponents.

Matt Drudge Pushes Socialism!!!!!!!

Posted 7/18/12 at 3:59pm by jamie

Matt Drudge has decided to start pushing socialism. Look at his big headline right now:

Here's the story Drudge links to, but I want to go to a story about this that came out two days earlier:

Hardheaded Socialism Makes Canada Richer Than U.S.

On July 1, Canada Day, Canadians awoke to a startling, if pleasant, piece of news: For the first time in recent history, the average Canadian is richer than the average American.

According to data from Environics Analytics WealthScapes published in the Globe and Mail, the net worth of the average Canadian household in 2011 was $363,202, while the average American household’s net worth was $319,970.

A few days later, Canada and the U.S. both released the latest job figures. Canada’s unemployment rate fell, again, to 7.2 percent, and America’s was a stagnant 8.2 percent. Canada continues to thrive while the U.S. struggles to find its way out of an intractable economic crisis and a political sine curve of hope and despair.

I've brought up before, how things like Canada's single payer healthcare system has been a big attraction to businesses, but there's also things like education:

The [Toyota] factory will cost $800 million to build, with the federal and provincial governments kicking in $125 million of that to help cover research, training and infrastructure costs.

SURPRISE! Romney Pushes Drudge Lie!

Posted 7/17/12 at 9:57am by jamie

On Sunday I posted about a huge lie that was being pushed by Drudge:

The article linked to by Drudge even pushed that this was Obama's doing, but as I also pointed out it was George W. Bush in January of 2004 that announced the retirement of the shuttle program. It was the Republican controlled 108th and 109th Congress that started the massive budget cuts. It was even George W. Bush in 2008 that signed the waiver stating American astronauts would fly on Russian spacecrafts to the ISS.

But don't let these facts stop the Romney campaign from pushing a huge lie that "President Obama outsourced the space program". Here's Romney surrogate and former New Hampshire Governor John Sununu on Monday:

How Right Wing Media Distorts Facts

Posted 7/3/12 at 5:46pm by jamie

Today a perfect example of right wing media scare tactics appears on Drudge. Currently this is his big story:

And when you read it you quickly think "there goes Obama and his power grab ignoring state sovereignty and even the birth of our nation". Of course if you actually read the article, this is what you see:

An Oregon town has reportedly canceled its annual fireworks show out of concern the Fourth of July pyrotechnics will scare sea birds roosting nearby.

Town officials in Depoe Bay have announced the cancellation of the annual pre-Independence Day fireworks show on July 3 following pressure from federal wildlife managers who said the noise disrupts sea birds in the area, the Oregonian reports.

The federal government did ask them to not have the show, and even put some pressure on them, but they didn't cause them to cancel it. Instead the town took it upon themselves.

But that won't stop the people on the right from yelling and screaming that this is all Obama's fault. It will become another conspiracy that we might even hear on the campaign trail. This is the reason our political discourse is so viral today. We have a simple ignorance of facts and only respond to hysteria. One of the greatest creators of that hysteria is Matt Drudge and he gets the attention to do it.

Maybe Americans should celebrate this Independence Day by breaking free of the shackles of misinformation and take a bit of time to become better informed. Look for the facts and ignore the hyperbole. Click on the links and don't judge by just the headlines. You'll be amazed at what you really find out.

Does Matt Drudge Read What He Posts?

Posted 10/5/11 at 10:12am by jamie

Maybe the media should think twice about considering Matt Drudge some sort of news source. Appearing on the Drudge Report this morning was this link:

There's a big problem with that. Government Motors is the right wing meme for General Motors because of the bailout they received. But look at the actual article Drudge was linking to. You don't even have to read it, just look at the headline:

Ford to pay workers $6,000 bonus in new contract

Ford - not GM! Ford didn't take a bailout. As matter of fact Ford refused government money. Shouldn't this be a cause for celebration, especially from the free market right? You would think so, but not in the world of Matt Drudge.

How Quick Matt Drudge Forgets

Posted 6/13/11 at 3:55pm by jamie

Here's Drudge's latest outrage:

And the article it links to::

A few weeks before announcing his re-election campaign, President Obama convened two dozen Wall Street executives, many of them longtime donors, in the White House’s Blue Room.

The guests were asked for their thoughts on how to speed the economic recovery, then the president opened the floor for over an hour on hot issues like hedge fund regulation and the deficit.

Mr. Obama, who enraged many financial industry executives a year and a half ago by labeling them “fat cats” and criticizing their bonuses, followed up the meeting with phone calls to those who could not attend.

The event, organized by the Democratic National Committee, kicked off an aggressive push by Mr. Obama to win back the allegiance of one of his most vital sources of campaign cash — in part by trying to convince Wall Street that his policies, far from undercutting the investor class, have helped bring banks and financial markets back to health.

But how quickly ole' Matt Drudge forgets. Remember this?

On an overcast Friday morning last month, White House aides ushered an influential group of conservative radio hosts into the Oval Office for a private audience with the president.

And They Really Consider Matt Drudge A "News Source"?

Posted 5/18/11 at 5:32pm by jamie

There has been so much news lately of how much of a "valuable news source" Matt Drudge is. Let's look at this "valuable" information. Here's two headlines appearing at the top of his page right now:

The original story from Esquire is here. Interesting enough, when you read it you will notice how it is tagged:

Notice that last tag? It says 'humor'. In other words, this piece was a satire piece. Now this story has been up on Drudge for less than 2 hours (3:30pm est), but look at what was added to the article 3 hours before that:

Loughner– Bush Hater?

Posted 1/17/11 at 4:16pm by jamie

The New York Times has run a lengthy profile on Tucson Shooter Jared Loughner, but out of the seven pages there is one part that caught the eye of Matt Drudge:

drjlbush

This part of the complex puzzle of “who is Jared Loughner” appears on page 3 of the article:

He became intrigued by antigovernment conspiracy theories, including that the Sept. 11 attacks were perpetrated by the government and that the country’s central banking system was enslaving its citizens. His anger would well up at the sight of President George W. Bush, or in discussing what he considered to be the nefarious designs of government.

OK – so not only does he hate Bush, but he was also a truther. But apparently Drudge couldn’t read past that paragraph to notice this part:

“I think he feels the people should be able to govern themselves,” said Ms. Figueroa, his former girlfriend. “We didn’t need a higher authority.”
