Is Romney Writing Off Florida?

Posted 8/13/12 at 5:26pm by jamie

This doesn't sound to good for the Mitt Romney campaign:

Mitt Romney is canceling a planned campaign stop Monday in Orlando after a whirlwind weekend in which the presumptive Republican nominee introduced Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) as his running mate.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the campaign said late Sunday that the presidential hopeful was "too exhausted to make the trip" after crisscrossing Virginia, North Carolina and Wisconsin over the weekend.

"We've been planning this bus tour for a while and had to adjust for stuff going on," Jeff Bechdel, Florida communications director for the campaign, told the paper.

Florida is one of the key battleground states this cycle and Romney is blowing off a campaign stop there because of "exhaustion"? Maybe he is truly exhausted, or maybe he is trying to figure out how to face the huge senior populace of Florida that depends upon Medicare, especially now that the man who wants to gut Medicare is his running mate. To see just how bad it is, checkout these headlines from Florida papers over the weekend.

Blame Bush? Here's Why We Should!

Posted 6/12/12 at 4:06pm by jamie

There has always been something about Republicans and their circling the wagons around the younger George Bush. But you would think that even the "fiscally conservative" members of America's right would cut their loses when it comes to Bush's economic performance. Instead they have constantly defended him and even attempted to rewrite history making the current economic situation start under Barack Obama.

Of course they are totally wrong and today Bruce Bartlett, a man who worked for Ronald Reagan, Ron Paul and even daddy Bush. tallies up the tab of Bush's damage:

Putting all the numbers in the C.B.O. report together, we see that continuation of tax and budget policies and economic conditions in place at the end of the Clinton administration would have led to a cumulative budget surplus of $5.6 trillion through 2011 – enough to pay off the $5.6 trillion national debt at the end of 2000.

Tax cuts and slower-than-expected growth reduced revenues by $6.1 trillion and spending was $5.6 trillion higher, a turnaround of $11.7 trillion. Of this total, the C.B.O. attributes 72 percent to legislated tax cuts and spending increases, 27 percent to economic and technical factors. Of the latter, 56 percent occurred from 2009 to 2011.

And how Bartlett gets to this conclusion is the most interesting part. He highlights just how bad Republican policy is fiscally:

The projected surplus was primarily the result of two factors. First was a big tax increase in 1993 that every Republican in Congress voted against, saying that it would tank the economy. This belief was wrong. The economy boomed in 1994, growing 4.1 percent that year and strongly throughout the Clinton administration.

Why Does The Tea Party Hate Jesus?

Posted 9/13/11 at 9:34am by jamie
Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.

-Matthew 10:8

During last night’s GOP/Tea Party debate on CNN, Wolf Blitzer asked Ron Paul if under his America would a sick man without insurance be allowed to die instead of receiving care. Before Paul could even answer, the Tea Partiers started chanting “yes”. Here’s the video caught by TPM:

It really hurts my brain to think about these people and how they go out and act like the righteous when it comes to religion, yet they ignore the most basically preaching's of God and Jesus. It also makes me want to break things when I think about these hypocrites. These are the same people that sat in town halls a couple of years ago telling politicians that the government better not touch their Medicare. These people believe that they are the ones entitled, but no one else.

Whatever Happened To “It Takes Money To Make Money”?

Posted 9/9/11 at 8:04am by jamie

The AP has put out a fact check of President Obama’s claim last night that everything in his jobs program is paid for:

resident Barack Obama's promise Thursday that everything in his jobs plan will be paid for rests on highly iffy propositions.

It will only be paid for if a committee he can't control does his bidding, if Congress puts that into law and if leaders in the future - the ones who will feel the fiscal pinch of his proposals - don't roll it back.

Apparently the Constitution has changed since President Obama took office. I thought that every program laid out by every President since the start of our country was dependent upon a Congress that the President doesn’t control? As matter of fact the Constitution says that and has since day one. Congress is a separate and independent branch of Government. Of course there are times when the President’s party controls both chambers, but that still doesn’t mean the President controls the Congress. That was obvious in 2009-2010, when Republicans launched a record number of filibusters against the democratically controlled Senate.

But even if it isn’t paid for, so what? The trillions of dollars the Bush tax cuts have cost us wasn’t paid for either, yet Republicans still passed them and keep them alive. Where was all the complaining that these had to be paid for? Hell – they are one of the biggest contributors to the national debt.

Angry Constituents Heat Up Democratic Townhalls Over Healthcare Reform

Posted 5/18/11 at 2:00pm by jamie

Just check out the anger that is brewing over at townhalls:

Of course my headline is totally misleading. Instead of Healthcare and Democratic Townhalls, it's actually Republican Townhalls and the issue of taxes, but my headline might get the media to actually notice that the Republicans are getting heat at townhalls over taxes and Medicare.

So, in this case, Rep. Dan Webster (R-FL) was confronted by many angry voters over the denial of raising corporate taxes or taxes on the wealthy. At one point he even threatened to kick out a voter, who kept pushing him on a question he refused to answer.

Where's the media outrage? Where's the flashing red light on Drudge or hours of "First Amendment violation" rhetoric on Fox?

Simple - the media don't care! Think about why. All the media people stand to lose if corporate taxes are raised or the top 2% end up having to pay their fair tax burden. They don't want people to know that there is a majority of Americans who are frustrated with the lower 98% paying for everything and getting more and more taken away.

If we can't get news of this outrage out in the open, then people will continue to be complacent and think they are in the minority. We really need to push these stories so that everyone can take notice and the Republicans are forced to change their tune.

The No Plan Tan Man

Posted 5/10/11 at 9:53am by jamie

Yesterday John Boehner said there would be no debt ceiling increase without cutting trillions in spending:

“Without significant spending cuts and changes to the way we spend the American people’s money, there will be no debt limit increase,” Mr. Boehner told members of New York’s business and finance community. “And cuts should be greater than the accompanying increase in debt authority the president is given.” Mr. Boehner said those cuts should be in the trillions of dollars, not billions.

So what should be cut? Well short of trying another push on the Ryan Medicare plan, something that Republicans are even souring on, Boehner gave no details.

Boehner did say everything “except tax hikes” is on the table. Would that include defense? Somehow I doubt it.

This really opens up a chance for President Obama to take lead on the issue. The President should do a speech and ask the Speaker exactly what he wants cut. Start pushing this, force John Boehner to lay out an actual plan instead of a talking point.

Of course talking points is all that John Boehner has. Remember back during the healthcare battle, when Boehner and company had this “much better plan”. They held a big press conference and released the “plan”, which turned out to be nothing but a glossy 8 1/2x11 talking point. When Boehner was pushed on the lack of details his response was “well we aren’t in charge, so we won’t do that”. Well Mr. Boehner, you are in charge now – where’s the details?

Paul Ryan’s Healthcare Mandate For Seniors Based On A Very Flawed System

Posted 5/6/11 at 10:11am by jamie

Paul Ryan has admitted that his Medicare plan is nothing more than a mandate for seniors. This is from a townhall Ryan held in Racine, Wisconsin:

Q: If Medicare becomes a voucher program, would you require seniors to purchase private insurance and if so isn’t that an individual mandate? If you will not require them to purchase insurance how do you propose to prevent a situation where the costs of uninsured seniors is very expensive and gets passed on to me as a private policy holder? [...]

RYAN: Its mandate works no different than how the current Medicare law works today, which is you just select from a wide range of different plans. It literally would be like Medicare Advantage…

Now how can mandates be unconstitutional for everyone but seniors? That just doesn’t make sense and it blows a big gapping hole into the GOP argument over the mandates in the healthcare reform bill passed last year.

But this isn’t the only problem. This is being billed as a way to financially save Medicare. This is from a GAO report done in 2008:

Though it was originally envisioned as a potential way to save the Medicare program money, the government pays on average 13 percent more to care for a Medicare Advantage enrollee than it would if that person were in traditional Medicare.

So the plan to save us money will actually cost our country 13% more? Here we go with the fuzzy GOP math again, and with forcing every senior into the program, costs will really skyrocket. Keep in mind that this isn’t some prediction from the OMB, this is based on the actual numbers from the existing program, as computed by the GAO.

Is The Left Finally Growing A Spine?

Posted 4/25/11 at 10:21am by jamie

Finally we are starting to see some new ads come out from the left exposing the Republican’s quest to destroy Medicare. The first one is coming from Americans United for Change, in which they are targeting certain Republican members of the House who are supporting the Ryan Plan. Here’s the ad, which will air in the districts of Steve King (R-IA), Sean Duffy (R-WI), Chip Cravaack (R-MN)  and Paul Ryan himself:

Then the DCCC comes out with a new web ad, expanding the field. In “Broken Promises: House Republicans Vote To End Medicare”, the DCCC seizes on the Republicans shredding their “Seniors’ Bill of Rights

Hopefully this is the start of the left showing more spine and countering the hypocrisy and ideological destruction of America the GOP is bringing down. All we need now is a larger audience for these ads – hopefully one of a national scale.

House Republicans Pass Obamacare For Seniors!

Posted 4/15/11 at 2:40pm by jamie

The House has just passed the Ryan budget plan:

The House has passed a Republican budget blueprint proposing to fundamentally overhaul Medicare for future beneficiaries while combating out-of-control budget deficits. It would impose sharp spending cuts on social safety net programs like food stamps and Medicaid.

The GOP proposal passed 235-193, with every Democrat voting "no." The nonbinding plan lays out a fiscal vision cutting $6.2 trillion over 10 years from the budget submitted by President Barack Obama.

The “Medicare Overhaul” was described like this:

"It's exactly like Obamacare," said NRSC chairman Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) in the Capitol Thursday. "It is. It's exactly like it. Which strikes me as bizarre that you're seeing so much pushback [from Democrats]."

So when will we see all the outrage in townhalls? When will seniors be yelling to “stay of my Medicare”?

Perhaps they need a reminder that the last time the Republicans screwed with Medicare, they ended up going months without getting medication and then found out about the great “doughnut hole” the Republicans created as a giveaway to big pharma.

GOP Considers Privatizing Medicare

Posted 1/28/11 at 8:32am by jamie

History really does repeat itself:

Months after they hammered Democrats for cutting Medicare, House Republicans are debating whether to relaunch their quest to privatize the health program for seniors. House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., is testing support for his idea to replace Medicare with a fixed payment to buy a private medical plan from a menu of coverage options.

Party leaders will determine if the so-called voucher plan will be part of the budget Republicans put forward in the spring.

I would really love to hear how a for-profit private company can cost less than the not-for-profit government, while maintaining the same level of care. It’s another pipe dream by Republicans and one that will not only cost this country more money, but also one that will sacrifice the health and well being of our seniors.

New Poll Finds That The GOP Congress Is The Opposite Of The People When It Comes To Spending

Posted 1/21/11 at 12:09pm by jamie

A new New York Times/CBS poll has some really interesting numbers when it comes to dealing with the budget. For example; 55% of respondents feel that cutting military spending is the right way to go, including 42% of Republicans, which was the winning cut for the GOP in the poll. That really goes against the budget proposal put out by the GOP yesterday.

Another interesting find is how Americans want to fix Social Security and Medicare. 48% feel the premiums should be raised on high-income recipients. That came in first, with raising the retirement age at second and with only 21% supporting it. Again, even the Republicans in the poll agree with raising the high-income premiums.

But most overwhelming is the results in the question “If you had to choose one, which of the following changes to Social Security benefits would you prefer in order to keep the program financially sound?”. Here are the results for that question:

nytpollmedicare

Two-thirds of the respondents feel we should reduce the benefits on the higher income recipients. Again, a vast majority of Republicans also support this idea.

What The People Really Want

Posted 1/3/11 at 9:13am by jamie

I am so sick of hearing Republicans like John Boehner say they are there to “represent the people”. Bullshit! They are there to represent special interest. If it was the other way around then they would listen to poll results like this:

Raising taxes on the rich beats out cuts to defense spending, Medicare or Social Security as U.S. adults' top preference on how to close the deficit, according to a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll.

Sixty-one percent of Americans said that increasing taxes to the wealthy should be the first step toward balancing the budget.

Yet the Republicans were willing to let tax cuts for the middle and lower class expire in order to protect tax cuts for the top 2% of this country. The Republicans are nothing but the whores of the ultra-rich.

Golfing John Boehner Doesn’t Think Americans Know How Bad The Economy Is

Posted 9/27/10 at 11:08am by jamie

After having spent the past four years in the minority, you would think congressional Republicans could actually come up with some sort of plans. Instead they lay out their “wish list”, but never present any path to make these wishes a reality.

That was scene again last week with the Republicans new “Pledge to America”. They once again gave us their list to Santa Claus, but the logistics of bringing these gifts from the North Pole to under our trees is nonexistent. John Boehner more or less even admitted it.

Transcript via Huffington Post (emphasis added):

WALLACE: But forgive me, sir. I mean, isn't the right time to have the adult conversation now before the election when you have this document? Why not make a single proposal to cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid?

BOEHNER: Chris, this is what happens here in Washington. When you start down that path, you just invite all kinds of problems. I know. I've been there. I think we need to do this in a more systemic way and have this conversation first. Let's not get to the potential solutions. Let's make sure Americans understand how big the problem is. Then we can begin to talk about possible solutions and then work ourselves into those solutions that are doable.

A Majority Of Minnesotans Are Embarrassed By Bachmannstein

Posted 4/17/10 at 9:55am by jamie

michele-bachmann-cuhrazy A new poll out has found that a majority of Minnesotans are embarrassed by their most famous member of Congress, Michele Bachmann:

A new survey of Minnesotans shows that a majority of residents — 56 percent — are embarrassed by Rep. Michele Bachmann. The release of the survey, commissioned by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Democracy for America and Credo Action, follows recent high-profile statements by Bachmann that she believes President Barack Obama wants to “annihilate” conservatives, that the U.S. faces a “curse” – and extinction — if it fails to support Israel, and that government must “wean” Americans off of social safety net programs like Medicare and Social Security.

BREAKING: Obama orders hospitals to grant same-sex couples visitation rights

Posted 4/15/10 at 7:52pm by jamie

Just received this breaking news alert from the Washington Post:

President Obama signed an order Thursday night requiring hospitals to allow gays and lesbians to have non-family visitors and to grant their partners medical power of attorney.

The president ordered the Department of Health and Human Services to prohibit discrimination in hospital visitation. The memo is scheduled to be made public Friday morning, according to an administration official and another source familiar with the White House decision.

An official said the new rule will affect any hospital that receives Medicare or Medicaid funding.

That’s a step in the right direction, but I can’t wait to hear the response from the Catholic hospitals. I’m sure that’s going to be very interesting.
