Why Do Republicans Love Pardoning Murderers?

Posted 1/12/12 at 11:10am by jamie

Former RNC chairman and darling of the right, Haley Barbour, has created a political tsunami:

A law-and-order Republican governor, Haley Barbour of Mississippi, has given full pardons or clemency to 208 inmates, including 14 convicted murderers, setting off a political uproar over the limits of executive power in the traditionally patriarchal South.

Mr. Barbour, a popular two-term governor who was term-limited from serving more, signed the pardons before leaving office on Tuesday. The surprise spree caught both Republicans and Democrats off stride, and it suggested that Barbour, who had flirted with running for the White House last year, may be leaving politics for good.

It has become so bad that a judge had to step up and actually block the pardons:

A Mississippi judge Wednesday evening issued a temporary injunction forbidding the release of any more prisoners pardoned or given clemency by outgoing Gov. Haley Barbour, whose actions created an uproar.

The pardons include four convicted murderers and a convicted armed robber who were released Sunday. The five now must contact prison officials on a daily basis as their fate is adjudicated.

The pardons are "a slap in the face to everyone in law enforcement and Gov. Barbour should be ashamed," said state Attorney General Jim Hood.

Another Pardon Problem

Posted 5/24/11 at 10:21am by jamie

The other night I covered the pardon problems of Mike Huckabee and Tim Pawlenty. Now a new GOP pardon problem comes to life. This one doesn't involve a presidential candidate, but rather a former President and aTea Party darling:

Though it’s typically pardon-empowered governors who must fret about their felons in the closet, legislators can also have some cause for worry. Case in point: Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who might need to explain her support for a pardon for a donor named Frank Vennes.

Vennes was convicted in 1988 on money-laundering charges, and pleaded no-contest to illegally selling a gun and aiding in a cocaine sale. He claimed he discovered religion while in prison, and went on to become a well-known donor - in fact, he was a top giver to Bachmann’s 2006 congressional campaign.

She reportedly wrote in a pardon letter to then-President George W. Bush in 2007, “Mr. Vennes is truly a unique man in that he is not asking for a pardon that he may achieve personal success. By the grace of God, this has been done. Mr. Vennes is seeking a pardon so that he may be further used to help others.”

Well, that depends on the meaning of helping others—in 2008, the feds raided Vennes’ home as part of a probe into a massive Ponzi scheme.

Vennes was indicted a few weeks ago. Bachmann also wrote another letter saying she acted to "hastily".

Luckily Vennes is a white-collar criminal. Could you imagine if he was a murderer or rapist? I'm sure that wouldn't have mattered to Bachmann, as the almighty dollar outweighs anyones safety.

The GOP Pardon Problem

Remember the story of Maurice Clemmons? He was a man that executed four Washington State police. Clemmons was essentially serving a life sentence in Louisiana for a series of burglaries, rape and a bunch of other nasty crimes. Well he was until then-governor, Mike Huckabee, decided to commute the sentence of Clemmons. After that he went to Washington and gunned down four police officers.

There's a reason for this trip down memory lane. Tomorrow morning former Minnesota Governor, Tim Pawlenty, is going to announce his run for the White House in 2012. Pawlenty, like his fellow Republican former governor Mike Huckabee, also has a problem with not taking crimes seriously (h/t Kos):

Jeremy Giefer served time in jail in 1994 for having sex with a 14-year-old girl. But you wouldn't know it to look at the record of the man now charged with sexually molesting his daughter more than 250 times over the last eight years.

That's because two years ago, Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Attorney General Lori Swanson, and then-Chief Justice Eric Magnuson unanimously voted to wipe Giefer's record clean, granting him a pardon extraordinary.

One reason Giefer wanted his record cleared? His wife wanted to open a childcare center in the house where they live--the same house where Giefer allegedly molested his young daughter throughout the six years prior.

So what happened with Giefer? Well:

Newt Gets Glittered

Newt gets glitter dumped on him at a book signing event.
Tiffany's isn't the only place Newt Gingrich can get some bling. He also can get the poor man's bling by just attending an event:

GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista were hit with glittery confetti by a protester Tuesday during the couple’s appearance at a book-signing.

The man approached the Gingriches during the signing at a downtown Minneapolis hotel, dumped a cracker box full of confetti on the pair and said, “Stop the hate!”

Two Associated Press reporters witnessed the event. The man was quickly pushed out of the room by an event organizer as the Gingriches brushed confetti out of their hair and laps. The glittery material covered the table they were using for the signing.

Hopefully this guy won't face any charges, since throwing trash at people is constitutionally protected free speech. Just ask Mike Huckabee.

A Huck-av-a Mystery In Arkansas

Posted 4/5/11 at 8:38am by jamie

Mother Jones:

Send a public records request seeking documents from his 12-year stint as Arkansas governor, as Mother Jones did recently, and an eyebrow-raising reply will come back: The records are unavailable, and the computer hard drives that once contained them were erased and physically destroyed by the Huckabee administration as the governor prepared to leave office and launch a presidential bid.

What’s Mike Huckabee trying to hide? We already know how he likes to let hardened criminals out of jail, like Maurice Clemmons, who went on to kill four police officers. Is there something even worse hiding in Huckabee’s tenure?

Pawlenty: I’m The Lessor Lying Evil Of The Pact

Posted 3/30/11 at 8:19am by jamie

In a stunning admission by GOP presidential hopeful, Tim Pawlenty, he informs us of what we already knew:

PAWLENTY: Well, anybody who’s going to run for this office who’s been in an executive position, or may run, has got some clunkers in their record. Laura, mine I think are fewer and less severe than most. As to climate change, or more specifically cap-and-trade, I’ve just come out and admitted it — look, it was a mistake, it was stupid. [...]

Everybody in the race, well at least the big names in the race, embraced climate change or cap-and-trade at one point or another. Every one of us.

As Think Progress points out:

Indeed, from Pawlenty to Mitt Romney to Newt Gingrich to Mike Huckabee to Mitch Danlies to Sarah Palin, many of the leading contenders for the 2012 presidential nomination have reversed themselves on climate change to pander to their hard-right base over the past few years.

What I haven’t heard yet is why? Why have all these candidates flip-flopped? Is it just to appease their radical base, or do they have some of their own scientific evidence debunking global warming?

Time To Talk Tough And Show Your Junk!

Posted 12/1/10 at 11:44am by jamie

I love it. Every time some new big outrage rips through the nation, politicians take to the airwaves to whip it out and see who has the biggest. Take Mike Huckabee for example:

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says execution is the appropriate punishment for the leaker who provided thousands of State Department documents to the website WikiLeaks.

“Whoever in our government leaked that information is guilty of treason, and I think anything less than execution is too kind a penalty,” Huckabee, a likely presidential candidate, told reporters Monday during a stop at The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Library to sign copies of his new children’s book, “Can’t Wait Till Christmas!

BooYah! Let’s talk about killing people while signing the children’s Christmas book we just authored. Mike Huckabee is so full of Christiany-goodness that it just hurts.

But I can’t let this end here. Instead I have an urge to jump into the mix and come up with my own punishment for the leaker. Maybe execution is to good for this guy? How about something with a little more creative and a lot more devious. Perhaps an appropriate punishment would be to place the leaker as the tail end of the Human Centipede?

Huckabee Loses A Supporter

Posted 12/2/09 at 1:06pm by jamie

Mike Huckabee is having a very bad week. First we find out that he granted clemency to a violent prisoner who went on to slay 4 Washington police officers. Now the fallout continues as his own flock start to leave:

As I mentioned this morning, I resigned my position as Arkansas coordinator for HuckPAC today where I served in a volunteer capacity. My departure was with a heavy heart but was done after serious prayer and consideration. Some have asked about the timing. As most could imagine, the recent news of the last two days along with the response did play a role in this decision but was not the sole factor.

Given the grave nature of Huckabee’s poor judgment in the Clemmons’ case, we can only expect to see many more resignations like this in the coming days and weeks. I know Huckabee was downplaying any talk of a 2012 run before the incident, but Huckabee was the front runner for the 2012 Republican primary and now he hasn’t a prayer, even if he does decide to run.

Mike Huckabee – The Poster Child For Separation Of Church And State

Posted 12/1/09 at 11:26am by jamie

Joe Conason has a very enlightening piece up about Mike Huckabee and his addiction to letting criminals walk free. In the article Conason points out something very interesting, yet missed in this debate:

Huckabee has proudly declared on many occasions that he disdains the separation of church and state, insisting that his strict Baptist piety should serve as the bedrock of public policy. Nowhere in his record as governor was the influence of religious zeal felt more heavily than in the distribution of pardons and commutations, as his own explanations have indicated.

Religion clouded Huckabee’s judgment, which resulted in the release of a record number of prisoners, including Maurice Clemmons. This is the very reason why we should chose leaders based upon their performance, instead of how many times they pray. Would Jesus let someone like Clemmons walk free to constantly repeat the violent crimes he had done all his life? I highly doubt it.

The next time someone says they will use their religious views to lead our nation, we now only have to point to the actions of Huckabee to argue against them.

Reminder – Huckabee Has Done This Before

Posted 11/30/09 at 8:44am by jamie

huckGetOutOfJail Maurice Clemmons wasn’t the first person that Huckabee released from Prison, only to have them go out and continue a life of crime. Wayne Dumond was a rapist who Huckabee released, only to go out and rape and kill a woman shortly after being freed:

New sources, including an advisor to Gov. Mike Huckabee, have told the Arkansas Times that Huckabee and a senior member of his staff exerted behind-the-scenes influence to bring about the parole of rapist Wayne Dumond, who Missouri authorities say raped and killed a woman there shortly after his parole.

Huckabee has denied a role in Dumond’s release, which has become an issue in his race for re-election against Democrat Jimmie Lou Fisher. Fisher says Huckabee’s advocacy of Dumond’s freedom, plus other acts of executive clemency, exhibit poor judgment. In response, Huckabee has shifted responsibility for Dumond’s release to others, claiming former Gov. Jim Guy Tucker made Dumond eligible for parole and saying the Post Prison Transfer Board made the decision on its own to free Dumond.

Again – Huckabee denies any wrongdoing on his part. This is beyond the pale, and for this man to be the GOP’s front runner for 2012 spells nothing but trouble for the opposition party.

Scarborough Going After Media For Covering Non-Stories

Posted 11/30/09 at 8:10am by jamie

While going on about Tiger Woods again this morning, Joe Scarborough started defending Woods from the onslaught of media coverage and said it reminded him of balloon boy. What’s interesting is that this is happening on the very morning when Scarborough could only take 10 seconds to talk about the slaying of the Washington police officers by a man released from prison by Mike Huckabee. Instead of talking about this big story, Scarborough has decided to talk about the White House party crashers and Tiger Woods.

Exit question – How much longer before MSNBC cuts their losses with the major ratings bomb that is Morning Joe? All they cover is fluff pieces.

Bashing The Listenting Tour

Posted 5/12/09 at 8:56am by jamie

Any guess who wrote this?

A new group was recently formed that is calling itself a group of experts for the purpose of making the Republican Party attractive to voters again. The strategy is supposedly to go on a listening tour so they can talk to the American people and hear what people are concerned about.

It's hard to keep from laughing out loud when people living in the bubble of the Beltway suddenly wake up one day and think they ought to have a listening tour; even funnier when their first earful expedition takes them all the way to the suburbs of Washington, D.C.

If some of these leaders had been listening already, they wouldn't need to form a group to start listening now. Some of the ones who have decided to start listening sure weren't listening last fall when they were supporting the TARP bailout bill that pretty much discredited any semblance of conservative conviction.

That’s from Mike Huckabee and is just another example of how the Republican Party is fracturing even more. What it really screams out is the vacuum of leadership the Republican Party is experiencing. As the status quo leaders try to rebuild the party we can expect to see the wanna-be leaders like Huckabee blasting them, and that is going to be even more fun to watch.

Staying Classy

Posted 12/27/08 at 8:26am by jamie

saltsman_kkk The party of old white Christian men does it again:

RNC candidate Chip Saltsman’s Christmas greeting to committee members includes a music CD with lyrics from a song called “Barack the Magic Negro,” first played on Rush Limbaugh’s popular radio show.

Saltsman, a personal friend of conservative satirist Paul Shanklin, sent a 41-track CD along with a note to national committee members.

“I look forward to working together in the New Year,” Saltsman wrote. “Please enjoy the enclosed CD by my friend Paul Shanklin of the Rush Limbaugh Show.”

The CD, called “We Hate the USA,” lampoons liberals with such songs as “John Edwards’ Poverty Tour,” “Wright place, wrong pastor,” “Love Client #9,” “Ivory and Ebony” and “The Star Spanglish banner.”

Several of the track titles, including “Barack the Magic Negro,” are written in bold font.

Saltsman, the former campaign manager for Mike Huckabee, has even been endorsed by his former boss and Bill Frist. Maybe someone in the media should ask the pastor or doctor how they feel about this.

There is one guarantee if Saltsman becomes the new RNC chair – they will remain in the minority for years to come. This kind of idiotic, hate-filled divisiveness is what has been destroying the GOP.
