military action

Haven’t We Seen This Game Before?

Erick Erickson on CNN:

here is not in any way, shape, or form any rational explanation for the United States engaged in Libya to do nothing except for one I can think of — Barack Obama's re-election.

Suddenly Obama can look Presidential again — all through manufacturing the need for American involvement where there was no need. Barack Obama wants to be re-elected. The best playbook for his re-election is that of Bill Clinton. But Clinton had a government shutdown and Kosovo. In the absence of either, Barack Obama must manufacture them.

And he has.

From a 1998 Washington Post article:

In August 1998, when [Clinton] ordered missile strikes in an effort to kill Osama bin Laden, there was widespread speculation — from such people as Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) — that he was acting precipitously to draw attention away from the Monica S. Lewinsky scandal, then at full boil. Some said he was mistaken for personalizing the terrorism struggle so much around bin Laden. And when he ordered the closing of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House after domestic terrorism in Oklahoma City, some Republicans accused him of hysteria.

Whenever a Democrat takes military action, the right takes to their aluminum foil hats to create any conspiracy theory they can. Of course Erickson is one of those that still believes we found WMD in Iraq, despite the Bush administration even admitting we never did. Aren’t you glad he works for the “most trusted name in news”?

Cheney Beats His Chest Screaming For War

Posted 10/22/07 at 9:17am by jamie

Dick Cheney should be considered the biggest threat to American security - period. The man wants nothing but war, and won't stop until he gets another one:

The United States and other nations will not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday.

"Our country, and the entire international community, cannot stand by as a terror-supporting state fulfills its grandest ambitions," Cheney said in a speech to the Washington Institute
for Near East Studies.

He said Iran's efforts to pursue technology that would allow it to build a nuclear weapon are obvious and that "the regime continues to practice delay and deceit in an obvious effort to buy time."

If Iran continues on its current course, Cheney said the U.S. and other nations are prepared to take action. The vice president made no specific reference to military action.

I really think his pace-maker is malfunctioning and shocking his brain instead.

Then we had Giuliani saying war with Iran wouldn't be that bad at the debate last night. Not that bad? Yeah I guess Iraq wasn't that bad either. I mean the dead soldiers are only a "small price to pay" according to John Boehner. I guess Giuliani is planning on it taking only a couple of months and I bet the oil will pay for it! Hey - why didn't they sell the Iraq war like that? Oh wait....

Like I have been saying, the Democrats need to simply say "If you want World War 3 then vote Republican". They do get their rocks off on war, look at how easily they beat the drums. Pretty bad for a bunch of pussies who don't have the guts to fight in a war.

Lieberman Ready To Take On Iran

Posted 6/10/07 at 9:44pm by jamie

Unbelievable. Think Progress has the video up.

“I think we have to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq,” Lieberman said. Host Bob Schieffer followed-up: “Let’s just stop right there. Because I think you probably made some news here, Senator Lieberman. You’re saying that if the Iranians don’t let up, that the United States should take military action?” “I am,” Lieberman responded.

Lieberman is further right than a lot of Republicans. This guy doesn't worry about American interests - he worries about the interests of Israel.

Could We Have Just Helped Al Qaeda?

Posted 6/8/06 at 9:39pm by jamie

With the death of Zarqawi brings a new and interesting question - could we have helped out al Qaeda?

To help you understand this line of thinking, let's go back in the near past (h/t to Think Progress on this one):

Jordanian-born al Qaeda militant Abu Musab Zarqawi has been replaced as head of the terrorist organization in Iraq in a bid to put an Iraqi figure at the head of the group's struggle, said a leading Islamist.

But terrorism specialists were divided on whether the move represented a demotion for the figure most closely identified with a wave of suicide bombings and beheadings or a move by Zarqawi to focus his efforts on a larger regional war.

Huthayafa Azzam, whose father is seen as a political mentor of al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, told reporters in Jordan over the weekend that Zarqawi, who has not made a public statement in months, was no longer the head of al Qaeda in Iraq and that his role "has been limited to military action."

Azzam, who claims close contacts with leading insurgents inside Iraq, said Zarqawi had "made many political mistakes," including kidnappings and beheadings that sparked popular revulsion and unauthorized operations outside Iraq, such as the November bombing of a Jordanian hotel.

The resistance command inside and outside Iraq, including imams, criticized [Zarqawi] and after long discussions demanded that he be confined to military action," Azzam told the Associated Press and other news outlets.

Israel will have to act on Iran if UN can't

The troubles in the Middle East thickens. Knowing Israels impateince in waiting for the UN to act on things which might affect it's security, how long will Israel sit there and wait for the UN to go back and forth with Iran on this issue?

BERLIN (Reuters) - If the U.N. Security Council is incapable of taking action to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, Israel will have no choice but to defend itself, Israel's defense minister said on Wednesday.

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz was asked whether Israel was ready to use military action if the Security Council proved unable to act against what Israel and the West believe is a covert Iranian nuclear weapons program.

"My answer to this question is that the state of Israel has the right give all the security that is needed to the people in Israel. We have to defend ourselves," Mofaz told Reuters after a meeting with his German counterpart Franz Josef Jung.

Iran denies wanting nuclear weapons and says it is only interested in the peaceful generation of electricity. It has also threatened to retaliate if Israel or the United States were to bomb any of its nuclear facilities.

In 1981, Israel bombed Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor to prevent Saddam Hussein from getting nuclear weapons. Saddam's covert atom bomb program continued until U.N. inspectors dismantled it after the 1991 Gulf War, but the Israeli strike set progress back many years.

"The Israeli approach is that the U.S. and the European countries should lead the issue of the Iranian nuclear program to the table of the U.N. Security Council, asking for sanctions. And I hope the sanctions will be effective," Mofaz said.

Going Nuclear In Iran

Well it appears that Iran is looking to develop a nuclear bomb.

IAEA confirms Iran prepares for nuclear
enrichment

VIENNA, Jan 31 (Reuters) - The U.N. nuclear watchdog confirmed on Tuesday
that Iran had begun preparing for nuclear enrichment, which can make fuel
for bombs, and continued to hinder a probe of unanswered questions about
Iran's atomic aims.

In a confidential report to the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA)
board of governors, the agency said Iran had not yet begun enrichment itself
but had started renovation work at its Natanz enrichment site.

Iran also prevented U.N. inspectors from questioning a key scientist
linked to the procurement of equipment that could have been used to make
weapons and did not let the IAEA copy documents related to the production of
nuclear weapons, the report said.

What is disturbing about this is the fact that Iraq has taken such a toll on
our forces and is possibly leaving us in a weaken state should we have to go
into military action against Iran. This was one of the problems brought up when
the argument was taking place over going to war with Iraq.

Kudos To Murtha

I finally had enough of a break to sit down and read the entire transcript of
Rep. John Murtha's press conference today and I am highly impressed (full
transcript available
here). We
have constantly been inundated with the the continuous line of "Democrats have
no plan". Well after reading this, Republicans must be working hard to update
their strategy because it is now evident that Democrats do have a plan. I will
get into that plan in a bit, but first I would like to share the powerful
opening to Murtha's statement.

"The war in Iraq is not going as advertised. It is a flawed policy
wrapped in illusion. The American public is way ahead of us. The United
States and coalition troops have done all they can in Iraq, but it is time
for a change in direction. Our military is suffering. The future of our
country is at risk. We cannot continue on the present course. It is evident
that continued military action is not in the best interests of the United
States of America, the Iraqi people or the Persian Gulf Region. "General
Casey said in a September 2005 hearing, "the perception of occupation in
Iraq is a major driving force behind the insurgency." General Abizaid said
on the same date, "Reducing the size and visibility of the coalition forces
in Iraq is part of our counterinsurgency strategy."

Traitor(s) in the White House

Posted 7/3/05 at 2:54am by jamie

On our Independence Day weekend, we are confronted with more fact that the
Bush White House is up to some not so legitimate games. Please bear with me
throughout the length of this posting, as I am going to start to assemble pieces
of the puzzle for all my readers. I will be quoting numerous articles throughout
and, as always, will be posting the appropriate links to them.

May 1, 2005 – The Publishing of the Downing Street Memo in London Times

This was the start that really put the blogosphere in high speed. The memo
was published in the London Times, and ignored by the United States mainstream
media for five weeks following. As matter of fact in recent articles regarding
the media’s ignoring of this pertinent document, they are starting to admit that
they dropped the ball.

The Downing Street Memo is an official British Document, or more so minutes,
where the head of British Intelligence, MI6, detailed a meeting in Washington
that took place in the spring of 2002. The most notorious paragraph of this
document involving the pending war in Iraq is as follows:

C reported on his recent talks in Washington. There was a perceptible shift
in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove
Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and
WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. The
NSC had no patience with the UN route, and no enthusiasm for publishing
material on the Iraqi regime's record. There was little discussion in
Washington of the aftermath after military action.

Yet More Ammo For The Smoking Gun

The London Times
released another classified British document today. Five weeks after the now
famous Downing Street Memo broke in the London Times, a new document shows even
more evidence that Bush had plans of removing Saddam from power in 2002. The
document, dated July 2002, has interesting points such as:

The US Government's military planning for action against
Iraq is proceeding apace. But, as yet, it lacks a political framework. In
particular, little thought has been given to creating the political conditions
for military action, or the aftermath and how to shape it.

Well they created the political conditions, or at
least tried to when the U.N. passed resolution 1441. The problem is they strayed
away from the U.N. after that and decided to go it alone. Since then the U.N.
has been dubbed as "ineffective".

Another point of interest I found in the document was:

Although no political decisions have been taken, US
military planners have drafted options for the US Government to undertake an
invasion of Iraq. In a 'Running Start', military action could begin as early as
November of this year

November of 2002 - Why should that be important? Well,
as I reported early
The Nation
had an interesting article talking about a massive offensive our forces, along
with British forces were conducting in November 2002, one month after the
President got his support from Congress to go to war and before U.N. resolution
1441.

An Act Of Rememberance This Memorial Day

Posted 5/30/05 at 4:39pm by jamie

Memorial Day is upon us. A day in which we honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice defending our great nation. It's a time when families and friends gather to cook out, an extra day of rest from the normal work week, and the kick off to the summer season. A holiday we have celebrated in our great country for nearly 140 years.

This Memorial Day weekend though, lets take time to remember what the holiday is about, and those who do not have the luxury of the get together's the rest of us will. Let's reflect upon those 1657 (as of May 30, 2005 10:00 am est) who did give the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and the ten's of thousands of troops who are still there fighting to this day, with no end in sight.

Now I am not saying to have disregard for the memories of other fallen soldiers from previous wars. They also are entitled to the remembrance by the citizens of our great country. The difference however is the fact that they were fighting actual wars for our great country. Those 1657 that gave the ultimate sacrifice did so in a war based upon falsified data and scare tactics used to get the support needed to launch a war. Those 1657 that have died, did so because of lies and a personal agenda that was being adhered to by the President of the United States and his cronies.

May 1, 2005. The Sunday Times in Britain released the now infamous Downing Street Memo. This memo, distributed to top british military and government officials, stated in July 2002 that the United states had plans to pursue a war in Iraq. The memo actually was a view into the near future, saying that:
