BREAKING: Rep. Weiner Resigning

Posted 6/16/11 at 10:24am by jamie

All major news organizations are reporting that Anthony Weiner has advised his associates that he is resigning from Congress. ABC reports the following:

Weiner, 46, has begun sharing his decision with close friends, the sources said, but has not yet sent a formal letter to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo indicating his intentions.

A Democratic source said Weiner called House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Wednesday night while they were at a White House picnic to inform them he would resign today.

If any good comes from this, maybe the media will move beyond this story soon. This has become such a major story and distraction.

BREAKING: START Passes The Senate

Posted 12/22/10 at 3:20pm by jamie

The Senate has just ratified the START treaty by a 71-26 vote. All Democrats voted for the bill and 13 Republicans, 1/4 of the Republican caucus, broke with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to ratify the new treaty.

(On a side note, sorry for the lack of posting. With the holidays, a bad cold and massive work load, I haven’t been able to keep up with anything!)

Why Pelosi Is The Right Woman For The Job

Posted 11/15/10 at 8:31am by jamie

If you have any doubts rather Pelosi should be minority leader or not, just take a look at this post from Armstrong Williams:

A barely known Democratic member of the House has done what over a half-dozen more qualified of his colleagues have cowered in fear over — mount a challenge to Rep. Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and her bid to remain the highest-ranking member when Democrats assume the minority in January.

Rep. Heath Shuler (N.C.), a former Heisman award winner, stepped up yesterday and announced his bid to unseat Pelosi as incoming minority leader. This isn’t some empty challenge, even though Shuler stands little chance. It’s one based on recognition of the political reality facing this party now — they’re about to be led over a cliff again by the same liberal shepherd.

Williams is taking Heath Shuler’s challenge to become minority leader as a real threat against Pelosi. Shuler is one of the few remaining Blue Dogs in the Democratic caucus, which saw a 50% loss of membership on Election Day. The fact that Williams is overlooking is that the more liberal members of Congress did fine in their election bids.

So thanks Armstrong for giving Pelosi the ultimate endorsement. If the House Democrats listen to you and do the exact opposite then they will see their numbers grow in future cycles.

Republicans Don’t Give A Shit About The Country – Only Their Party

Posted 3/17/10 at 9:47am by jamie

I’ve been saying it all along and now Mitch McConnell is validating it:

Before the health care fight, before the economic stimulus package, before President Obama even took office, Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican minority leader, had a strategy for his party: use his extensive knowledge of Senate procedure to slow things down, take advantage of the difficulties Democrats would have in governing and deny Democrats any Republican support on big legislation.

Republicans embraced it. Democrats denounced it as rank obstructionism. Either way, it has led the two parties, as much as any other factor, to where they are right now. Republicans are monolithically against the health care legislation, leaving the president and his party executing parliamentary back flips to get it passed, conservatives revived, liberals wondering what happened.

In the process, Mr. McConnell, 68, a Kentuckian more at home plotting tactics in the cloakroom than writing legislation in a committee room or exhorting crowds on the campaign trail, has come to embody a kind of oppositional politics that critics say has left voters cynical about Washington, the Senate all but dysfunctional and the Republican Party without a positive agenda or message.

Boehner’s Chief Of Staff Dies Unexpectedly

Posted 1/10/10 at 5:21pm by jamie

Via FOX News

A 46-year-old top aide to House Republican Leader John Boehner died suddenly, reportedly from a heart attack, the minority leader announced Sunday.

"It is with profound sadness and shock that I announce the passing of Paula Nowakowski, my longtime chief of staff, trusted aide, and friend, who died suddenly last night. Words cannot adequately express the sorrow and disbelief I and every member of our team are grappling with today in the wake of this stunning news," Boehner said in a statement on his House leadership Web site.

"We will remember Paula as she would want to be remembered -- as a tireless worker, faithful friend, rabid Detroit sports fan, whip-smart strategist, warrior for freedom, and devoted Catholic who counted President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II among her greatest heroes. She will never be replaced, or forgotten," Boehner continued.

Only 46. What a shocker.

REPORT: “Dems 'Almost Certain' to Bypass Conference” On #HCR

Posted 1/4/10 at 8:44am by jamie

This is a very bad idea: (from TNR)

According to a pair of senior Capitol Hill staffers, one from each chamber, House and Senate Democrats are “almost certain” to negotiate informally rather than convene a formal conference committee. Doing so would allow Democrats to avoid a series of procedural steps--not least among them, a series of special motions in the Senate, each requiring a vote with full debate--that Republicans could use to stall deliberations, just as they did in November and December.

“There will almost certainly be full negotiations but no formal conference,” the House staffer says. “There are too many procedural hurdles to go the formal conference route in the Senate.”

One reason Democrats expect Republicans to keep trying procedural delays is that the Republicans have signaled their intent to do so. On Christmas Eve, when the Senate passed its bill, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell memorably vowed in a floor speech that “This fight isn't over. My colleagues and I will work to stop this bill from becoming law."

“I think the Republicans have made our decision for us," the Senate staffer says. "It’s time for a little ping-pong.”

Let’s think about this for a minute. If the Democrats go this route Republicans will use it to say that the Democrats are “ramming this bill down our throats” and “bypassing normal legislative procedure.” The media will certainly echo this sentiment and the Democrats will lose out.

Like wise a ping-pong will upset a lot of progressives, who are hoping for improvements coming out of conference. If Congress gives it at least 110% effort to fix the bill in conference, then it will soften the impact a lot more than just bypassing it all together.

John Boehner – Now’s Your Chance To Support Healthcare!

Posted 11/11/09 at 10:51am by jamie

Let’s see what the minority leader has to say today:

vdjbtwt

Now let’s have a look at exactly what Boehner has said:

“One generation of Americans after another has answered the call of duty without fail. These brave men and women call themselves veterans. We call them heroes. Today, we renew our commitment to repaying the debt we owe them knowing we can never fully do so except to cherish the blessings of freedom they have preserved for us and stand with the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines who carry on in their stead.”

I can’t think of a better way of “repaying the debt” than to provide access to healthcare to all our veterans, unlike the 2,200 that died last year had. What say you John? I’m not asking as a blogger, but as one of your constituents.

Republicans Still Trying To Slow Down Health Care Reform

Posted 10/19/09 at 9:34am by jamie

Is this any real shock?

With Democratic leaders and White House officials holed up in Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) office negotiating a final bill, Republicans are demanding a deceleration of the process and moving to define whatever plan that emerges as a combination of Medicare cuts, tax increases, higher insurance premiums and rising overall costs.

Notice how they throw out Medicare cuts again? The party that rammed through a prescription drug bill for Medicare that ended up preventing seniors from getting their life saving medications is bitching about this. The Republicans that introduced the doughnut hole that makes Seniors, even those on low/fixed income, to pay full price for their needed meds are still acting like the saviors of Medicare.

Then we have this part:

Senate Democrats are rejecting Republicans’ demands to slow things down, charging that the GOP isn’t interested in working with the majority to craft a bipartisan health care bill. Rather, Reid said repeatedly last week, the Republicans’ primary goal is to sink reform in order to undercut President Barack Obama.

(emphasis added)

I’m glad that the Democrats finally realized that the Republicans absolutely do not want bipartisanship or even health care reform. Hell it took the minority leader basically saying that exact thing for them to realize this. Why didn’t they listen months ago when every one else was saying that the Republicans had absolutely no plans of working with Democrats let alone reform health care? We would have a much better bill that would probably be law already.

Why Rep. Grayson Is Right

Posted 10/1/09 at 11:30am by jamie

With all the focus on Rep. Grayson telling it like it is, that Republicans want you to die quick if you fall ill, it’s time to focus on what he said is exactly right. Enter Mitch McConnell:

Satisfying every Republican demand short of scrapping the entire project, said Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), would still not capture GOP support.

In other words the Democrats could offer nothing more than 100% GOP plan and the GOP would still vote no. People are dying in this country and the GOP would rather play politics than address the situation at hand.

Now let’s look at what McConnell and the entire GOP view as items less important than watching their counterparts fail. Check out this video of an insurance company denying coverage because of a pre-existing condition:

Catch that? A broken wrist is considered a pre-existing condition and murderous fucks like McConnell, Boehner and the rest of the GOP thinks that is fine.

Let’s talk about something more common – diabetes. Most insurance companies won’t cover the cost of diabetic supplies. That means diabetics have out of pocket expenses of $100 a month just for the testing strips. If the insulin isn’t covered then you can add another $330 a month to that. And this isn’t a problem to the “party of life”? Nope – because these monsters are more worried about political brownie points and corporate profits than they are human life.

Sounds Like Pelosi Was Right

Posted 7/9/09 at 9:14am by jamie

Remember all the rage from the right a couple of months ago when Nancy Pelosi aid the CIA mislead Congress? Well according to the head of the CIA, Pelosi may have just been telling the truth:

The director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Leon E. Panetta, has told the House Intelligence Committee in closed-door testimony that the C.I.A. concealed “significant actions” from Congress from 2001 until late last month, seven Democratic committee members said.

Now this adds a new layer to the outrage manufactured y the right over Pelosi’s comments. They twisted what she said and made it out that she was accusing the CIA of lying to Congress, a violation of law. Of course this was something that Republican members of Congress had also done in the past, including the top Republican on the intelligence committee and the minority leader.

So why did the Republicans get into such an uproar over Pelosi’s comments? Sure it could be in part that they saw blood and a way to go after the Speaker of the House, but could there be another reason given this admission by Panetta? Perhaps the Republicans knew that this was happening under the Bush administration and figured they better pull the old “slight of hand” move so that no one would look at the legal issues raised by the Bush CIA. This is even more plausible when you look at the two Republicans who lead the charge against Pelosi – the very two who made the same claims as Pelosi in the past.

Obama Surrounded By Terrorists!

Posted 5/1/09 at 1:16pm by jamie

bohc

That picture is the proof. I mean look at all those terrorists! John Boehner proves it in his new “Do You Feel Safer” video.

But wait.

Are those terrorists?

Hispanic Democrats are furious and demanding an apology over an image wedged in a new GOP web video on terrorism that shows members of the Hispanic Caucus sitting at a table with President Obama.
“On behalf of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), we write to demand an apology for the inclusion of the picture of the CHC meeting with President Obama in the video on your official website entitled “Do You Feel Safer?,’” the CHC wrote in a letter being sent to Republican Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), whose office created the video.

So Boehner figured he would make people think “terrorist” by seeing Hispanics. But these aren’t any Hispanics. These are his colleagues in the House.

Of course Boehner is having none of that. Here’s what his spokesman said:

“This is beyond silly,” Boehner spokesman Michael Steel responded. “The video also includes an image of the President speaking at the House Democratic Retreat in Virginia. Is the Congressional Hispanic Caucus suggesting that every Democrat in the House is connected with terrorists? Of course not. America’s national security is serious. This complaint is not.”

Bi-Partisanship

Posted 4/22/09 at 2:12pm by jamie

The Cincinnati Enquirer is preparing to rank President Obama’s first hundred days. In doing so they listed how local lawmakers have voted with the President.

  • Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio: 100 percent
  • Rep. Steve Driehaus, D-Ohio: 86 percent
  • Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio: 71 percent
  • Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio: 43 percent
  • Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.: 41 percent
  • Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky.: 24 percent
  • Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio: 0 percent
  • Rep. Geoff Davis, R-Ky.: 0 percent
  • Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio: 0 percent

I think the most telling number there is that of the House minority leader, John Boehner. He is setting the lead for his caucus and they are following in lockstep with him. Even the Senate’s Minority Leader has been able to support the President 41% of the time.

Pete Hoekstra Can’t Keep A Secret

Posted 2/7/09 at 9:50am by jamie

Now if a Democrat did this the Republicans would be calling for a criminal investigation:

A congressional trip to Iraq this weekend was supposed to be a secret.

But the cat’s out of the bag now, thanks to a member of the House Intelligence Committee who broke an embargo via Twitter.

A delegation led by House Minority Leader John A. Boehner , R-Ohio, arrived in Iraq earlier today, and because of Rep. Peter Hoekstra , R-Mich., the entire world — or at least Twitter.com readers—now know they’re there.

“Just landed in Baghdad,” messaged Hoekstra, a former chairman of the Intelligence panel and now the ranking member, who is routinely entrusted to keep some of the nation’s most closely guarded secrets.

Before the delegation left Washington, they were advised to keep the trip to themselves for security reasons. A few media outlets, including Congressional Quarterly, learned about it, but agreed not to disclose anything until the delegation had left Iraq.

Nobody expected, though, that a lawmaker with such an extensive national security background would be the first to break the silence. And in such a big way.

Not only did Hoekstra reveal the existence of the lawmakers’ trip, but included details about their itinerary in updates posted every few hours on his Twitter page, until he suddenly stopped, for some reason, on Friday morning.

Wow – what an idiot. Perhaps it’s time to reexamine his security clearance credentials.

The “Party Of Whiners”

Posted 1/3/09 at 8:40am by jamie

cryingbab Paul Krugman does a hell of a job dissecting the Republican party’s failures and where it has left them. One part of his latest column that really sticks out is this:

The fault, however, lies not in Republicans’ stars but in themselves. Forty years ago the G.O.P. decided, in effect, to make itself the party of racial backlash. And everything that has happened in recent years, from the choice of Mr. Bush as the party’s champion, to the Bush administration’s pervasive incompetence, to the party’s shrinking base, is a consequence of that decision.

If the Bush administration became a byword for policy bungles, for government by the unqualified, well, it was just following the advice of leading conservative think tanks: after the 2000 election the Heritage Foundation specifically urged the new team to “make appointments based on loyalty first and expertise second.”
