A Huck-av-a Mystery In Arkansas

Posted 4/5/11 at 8:38am by jamie

Mother Jones:

Send a public records request seeking documents from his 12-year stint as Arkansas governor, as Mother Jones did recently, and an eyebrow-raising reply will come back: The records are unavailable, and the computer hard drives that once contained them were erased and physically destroyed by the Huckabee administration as the governor prepared to leave office and launch a presidential bid.

What’s Mike Huckabee trying to hide? We already know how he likes to let hardened criminals out of jail, like Maurice Clemmons, who went on to kill four police officers. Is there something even worse hiding in Huckabee’s tenure?

The Gadhafi Mentality Of The Right

Posted 2/23/11 at 9:55am by jamie

Jeff Cox is a deputy attorney general for the state of Indiana. This weekend he took to Twitter to go after the protestors in Wisconsin:

On Saturday night, when Mother Jones staffers tweeted a report that riot police might soon sweep demonstrators out of the Wisconsin capitol building—something that didn't end up happening—one Twitter user sent out a chilling public response: "Use live ammunition."

From my own Twitter account, I confronted the user, JCCentCom. He tweeted back that the demonstrators were "political enemies" and "thugs" who were "physically threatening legally elected officials." In response to such behavior, he said, "You're damned right I advocate deadly force." He later called me a "typical leftist," adding, "liberals hate police."

Does one of the state’s attorneys for Indiana not understand due process? If people are threatening violence against legal officials then they should be arrested and prosecuted, not shot. This was totally uncalled for and something we hear coming out of Libya.

And here comes the totally hypocritical nonsense of this moron:

Man Arrested With Guns Near Obama Was A Bush Employee

Posted 12/23/09 at 4:55pm by jamie

This makes this case that much more disturbing:

The man who was arrested with two guns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition near the Capitol during President Barack Obama's health care speech in September had been an employee of the George W. Bush White House. The arrest of the man, Joshua Bowman, was widely reported at the time, but the news stories made no mention of his previous employment: For several years he worked in the Executive Office of the President, dealing with tech issues, including White House emails, his lawyer, George Braun, tells Mother Jones.

On the night of September 9, Bowman was on his way to meet Braun, a Bush administration political appointee, at the National Republican Club on First Street, SE when he was stopped by Capitol Police around 7:45 p.m.—minutes before Obama was scheduled to deliver a major address to Congress pushing his health care initiative. Bowman had driven up to a security checkpoint and told officers he wanted to park, but his lack of a permit for the area aroused their suspicions, and they asked to search his car.

Seriously – shouldn’t someone who worked in the White House know better? I know this was an honest mistake on Braun’s part, but still – a little common sense please?

Why Is The Palin Email Hacking Case Receiving So Much Attention From The DOJ?

Posted 10/10/08 at 9:21am by jamie

I have spent a long time working in the computer industry and one of the areas I do a lot of work in is cyber security. That means I have been very interested in the whole Palin email hacking case. Essentially what has puzzled me is the attention it has received from the Department of Justice. Email accounts get hacked all the time, usually at the rate of thousands per day. Even worse is the number of people who get suckered into bank scams or suffer from identity theft. These are far worse crimes yet the DOJ has allocated very few resources to fighting them. But when Sarah Palin gets her email hacked, they jump into a full Elliot Ness style task force to hunt down the perpetrators.

Harpers Magazine is now raising these issues in an article that deserves an entire read, but here is a key part:

The Justice Department seems to be setting one of its amazing new rules. When a Republican political figure is damaged in her expectation of being elected to office, it is telling us, that’s a felony. And why is that the case here? Because the hacker helped establish something important: Sarah Palin has been systematically violating the Open Records Act. As David Corn has noted at Mother Jones, Palin relied heavily on private email accounts for improper purposes. As governor of Alaska, she was obligated to maintain as public records her communications with respect to her discharge of official duties. Palin skirted this obligation by turning to private email accounts for government related dealings. In fact, the hacker in question helped flush out Palin’s violations. The hacker also helped establish a motive for the illegal conduct: Palin regularly involved her husband in official business, and it’s easy to understand why she did not want to leave behind evidence of her husband’s involvement.

Working To Protect Our Oceans

Posted 6/7/06 at 1:31am by jamie

Mother Jones has started a new website dedicated to defending our oceans. Ocean Voyager promises this:

Once a week for five weeks, you’ll receive an email invitation to a different ocean “hot spot” around the world. From chasing fish pirates off the coast of Africa to tracking a mother polar bear across the Arctic, you’ll learn how our oceans are under attack — and then take action. Our online tools make it easy. From fighting for better ocean laws to keeping endangered seafood off your plate, you’ll make a difference.

As Think Progress points out "What’s noteworthy about the site is that it doesn’t focus on the work of one organization, but rather highlights the best of the best of what a multitude of nonprofits are doing to conserve our oceans.”

This site provides free videos and asks us to get involved in protecting our oceans. It provides the information and tools necessary so we can all work to help make a difference and protect our endangered oceans. Please take a moment and sign-up and invite someone else to join in this great cause.

Which Party are the Veterans From?

Posted 11/23/05 at 8:09pm by jamie

We constantly hear that our troops favor the Republican position of staying
the course in Iraq. If that is the case then why is it most Iraq vets running
for Congress in '06 are running as Democrats? Just take a look at these numbers
from

Mother Jones
:

Candidate

Seat

Party

David Ashe Virginia 2nd D
Andrew Duck Maryland 6th D
Tim Dunn North Carolina 8th D
Patrick Murphy Pennsylvania 8th D
Bryan Lentz Pennsylvania 7th D
Paul Hackett Ohio Senate D
Tim Walz Minnesota 1st D
Chris Carney Pennsylvania 10th D
Eric Massa New York 29th D
Van Taylor Texas 17th R
Hiram Lewis WV Senate R

That is 9 out of 11, or 82%,  congressional candidates in '06 running on
the Democrat ticket. I am not going to down the Republicans running that are
veterans. All these men are exceptional. They have served our country in the
most diligent way, by fighting for it, and they wish to continue to serve our
country by leading it. It is just somewhat shocking that so many of those vets
who are running are Democrats. What does that say for the Republican Party? The
answers should be interesting.
