Irene Expected To Reach Category 4 By Thursday

Posted 8/23/11 at 10:43am by jamie

Hurricane Irene is continuing to gain steam in the Atlantic and is now predicted to reach Cat-4 status late Thursday, right before it hits the eastern seaboard of Florida. It will continue up the coast and weaken to a still strong Cat 3 as it hits Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia. Here is the current path projection from the NHC:

This storm has the very real possibility of causing serious damage. Given the struggling economies of the states, it's a safe bet that they will request federal aide to recover. That makes me wonder about a representative from one of the targeted states, Eric Cantor.

Remember back in May when Joplin, Mo. was flattened by an EF-5 tornado? An entire U.S. town was devastated, but when it came time to help we saw Eric Cantor use the disaster to push a poetical agenda

The No. 2 House Republican said that if Congress doles out additional money to assist in the aftermath of natural disasters across the country, the spending may need to be offset.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said “if there is support for a supplemental, it would be accompanied by support for having pay-fors to that supplemental.”

Cantor: Missouri Can Suffer Unless We Cut Spending

An EF-5 tornado leaves most of Joplin, Missouri in rubble.
When all the news was turned to the flooding Mississippi, there was a big rumor going around the right wing media that the federal government wouldn't offer any aide. Of course that was a flat out lie and FEMA is still expanding the financial aide.

This week Joplin, Missouri was hit by the worst tornado in it's history. The entire town was basically flattened. So is our federal government ready to help there? Well not if Eric Cantor has his way:

Finding ways to offset disaster relief funds could be a significant challenge for House Republicans and would put their promise to cut spending to a true test.

OMG! Obama Played Golf!!!

Here we go with more of the dumbasses on the right and their constant search for a new outrage. This week it appears to be the fact that Obama played golf this weekend, and it’s his 10th round in as many weeks. Here’s Gateway Pundit:

It's the worst recession since the Great Depression.

Dear Leader was able to squeeze in another game of golf this weekend.
The Hill reported:

I wonder if Obama ignored any presidential daily briefings say “Bin Laden determined to attack” while golfing? What American cities did we lose to natural disasters while Obama enjoyed a little off time?

And the craziness doesn’t stop there:

Thankfully, his last name is not 'Bush,' or the state-run media would be merciless.

That link Gateway Dumbass posts goes to a Michael Moore video. Now Michael Moore is “state-run media”?

True Gateway takes his breaks rather often also. Here he is enjoying a beer between blog posts:

Reid and Pelosi Write the Chimp

From the Gavel:

March 28, 2007

The President
The White House
Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear Mr. President:

Last week the House of Representatives on a bipartisan vote passed an emergency supplemental spending bill. The Senate is poised to pass its version of the bill as soon as later today. Both bills contain much needed funding for our troops and our veterans. Both bills also chart a new course forward in Iraq. Given the importance and urgency of this legislation to our troops and our security, we are quite disturbed by your insistence to veto it. Rather than work with the Congress to develop a bill you could sign, you apparently intend to follow a political strategy that would needlessly delay funding for our troops.

Both the House and Senate versions of this legislation address critical priorities that were either ignored or substantially under-funded by your Administration in the regular budget process. For example, despite the fact that our troops have been fighting in Afghanistan since 2001 and in Iraq since 2003, your regular budget submission to the Congress did not include funding for either war. Your regular budget also failed to adequately address the urgent veteran’s health care crisis, vulnerabilities in our homeland security, and the needs of thousands of victims of several severe natural disasters. This Congress is taking the responsible course and responding to needs that have been ignored by your Administration and the prior Congress.

Bush Uniting The Country

Posted 2/27/06 at 3:20pm by jamie

After Bush won the 2004 election he vowed to unite our divided country. Well
in a way he has:

Governors of both parties said Sunday that Bush administration policies
were stripping the National Guard of equipment and personnel needed to
respond to hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, forest fires and other
emergencies.

Tens of thousands of National Guard members have been sent to Iraq,
along with much of the equipment needed to deal with natural disasters and
terrorist threats in the United States, the governors said here at the
winter meeting of the National Governors Association.

The National Guard, which traces its roots to the colonial militia, has a
dual federal-state role. Governors normally command the Guard in their
states, but Guard members deployed overseas in support of a federal mission
are under the control of the president.

The governors said they would present their concerns to President Bush
and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Monday. In a preview of their
message, all 50 governors signed a letter to the president opposing any cuts
in the size of the National Guard.

With hurricane season rapidly approaching and predictions of it being another
bad one, this should really be a major concern. Bush vowed to fix problems
exposed on the federal level after the Katrina report came out last week. One of
the major problems was a lack of National Guard troops available to respond.
Sadly we all know he won't listen to the warnings and try to get our National
Guard home were they belong.

A Further Look Into What Went Wrong

Further reading into the 426 pages that make up the
National Response Plan (NRP) put out by the Department of Homeland Security
(DHS), I uncovered a few more interesting facts.

First it mandates that the DHS

The Homeland Security Act of 2002 established DHS to
prevent terrorist attacks within the United States; reduce the vulnerability of
the United States to terrorism, natural disasters, and other emergencies; and
minimize the damage and assist in the recovery from terrorist attacks, natural
disasters, and other emergencies. The act also designates DHS as “a focal point
regarding natural and manmade crises and emergency planning.”

The last sentence is of particular interest here. Constant
blame is given to the state and local authorities for their lack of planning in
this crisis, however, per the DHS’s own NRP; they are the “focal” point of
planning. Kind of like blaming the student when the teacher fails.

Further into the plan, it calls for a pro-active role for
DHS. This is what the proactive roll calls for:
