Shorter Newt: "They Are Out To Get Me!"

Posted 1/27/12 at 6:37pm by jamie

After the NBC debate Newt Gingrich blamed the media for not allowing the audience to cheer and even threatened to pull out of future debates that do the same. Now he's claiming that the cheering audience last night was stacked against him:

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich rode a strong performance and crowd enthusiasm at a debate in South Carolina to victory in that state’s primary, but the crowds at two debates in Florida this week haven’t been as wild for Gingrich. Now his campaign is claiming that rival Mitt Romney’s campaign stacked the audience at Thursday’s debate with its supporters to shift the energy toward Romney, the Huffington Post reported.

“They definitely packed the room," Kevin Kellems, a Gingrich adviser, told the Post.
But that’s not the case, according to both the Florida Republican Party and the Romney campaign. The party, which doled out 900 of the 1,200 tickets, says most of them went to “rank and file” Republicans.

“We did a very thorough job of getting them to the rank and file, vetting them to make sure they went to registered Republicans and then making sure they went out to people that were not knowingly affiliated” with the campaigns, Party spokesman Brian Hughes told the website.

But I guess in this case there could be some truth. The "rank and file" Republicans are the ones who are opposed to Newt winning the nomination. They are the ones currently out there blasting him in the news cycle 24/7. It's not the Democrats or the "liberal media", but Newt's own party that is against him. Newt has a serious problem and can't even logically blame his usual nemesis' for it.

Quote Of The Day

Posted 11/24/10 at 7:55am by jamie

NBC Miami has a report of a man pulled off a flight from Ft. Lauderdale to Denver for making too many bathroom trips. This part of the article has me cracking up:

It's unclear if this is was classified as a terror alert yellow or brown, but authorities took it seriously enough to evacuate the plane.

That line right there is a total win. At least we can laugh over the craziness going on with airline travel.

Now It’s Scarborough’s Turn

Posted 11/19/10 at 1:57pm by jamie

joe-scarborough-msnbcFrom the wake of the Keith Olbermann suspension comes this new bit of news:

MSNBC said Friday that it is suspending “Morning Joe” co-host Joe Scarborough for two days after he acknowledged giving eight previously unknown $500 contributions to friends and family members running for state and local offices during his tenure at the network, a violation of parent NBC’s ban on political contributions by employees without specific permission from the network president.

“I recognize that I have a responsibility to honor the guidelines and conditions of my employment, and I regret that I failed to do so in this matter,” Scarborough said in a statement. “I apologize to MSNBC and to anyone who has been negatively affected by my actions,” he said, adding that after he was made aware of some of the contributions, he called MSNBC president Phil Griffin “and agreed with Phil's immediate demand of a two-day suspension without pay.”

I wonder how much longer this rule will last? MSNBC has become more partisan over the years and they can’t expect their hosts to not give to campaigns or remember to seek “permission” for every single donation.

Tucker Carlson’s Childish Games

Bloomberg News Hosts Party Year HFd0vW6xhLZlEarlier this week the gossip site Phawker posted an email exchange between Stu Bykofsky of the Philadelphia Daily News and Keith Olbermann. The exchange started with this email from Keith Olbermann:

“Dear Stu,

Since you’re obviously a moron, I won’t waste your time or mine writing more emails you clearly can’t understand. But I do want to correct one of the numerous errors of fact in your email: Phil Griffin did not suspend me. He doesn’t have the power or frankly the courage to do so. Once I had been (very) temporarily relieved of my duties by NBC management, Phil got on the phone to some of your fellow idiot TV columnists and tried to claim credit.

As if.

I could have Phil Griffin fired tomorrow if I felt like it, trust me. And if he keeps yapping about me in public, I may. For the moment, however, keeping Phil around is like having a drunk chimp in the office — more amusing than threatening.

Feel free to correct the record in your ‘column.’

KO”

Olbermann’s Apology Shows A Problem In MSNBC

Posted 11/9/10 at 8:53am by jamie

imagesLast night Keith Olbermann issued the following statement:

A STATEMENT TO THE VIEWERS OF COUNTDOWN

by Keith Olbermann

I want to sincerely thank you for the honor of your extraordinary and ground-rattling support. Your efforts have been integral to the remedying of these recent events, and the results should remind us of the power of individuals spontaneously acting together to correct injustices great or small. I would also like to acknowledge with respect the many commentators and reporters, including those with whom my politics do not overlap, for their support.

I also wish to apologize to you viewers for having precipitated such anxiety and unnecessary drama. You should know that I mistakenly violated an inconsistently applied rule – which I previously knew nothing about – that pertains to the process by which such political contributions are approved by NBC. Certainly this mistake merited a form of public acknowledgment and/or internal warning, and an on-air discussion about the merits of limitations on such campaign contributions by all employees of news organizations. Instead, after my representative was assured that no suspension was contemplated, I was suspended without a hearing, and learned of that suspension through the media.

What The Olbermann Suspension Really Teaches Us

Posted 11/6/10 at 9:30am by jamie

koSilencedSomething a lot of people don’t seem to be discussing is the merits of the actual rule requiring MSNBC/NBC employees to get approval before making political donations, and the further extreme stance of CNN barring it’s employees from the act. To me this is something that goes against the fundamental Constitutional right of Americans to engage in the political process.

These type of policies are not limited to the media though. Another common place to find them is in local government. From police to firefighters to regular city workers, countless municipalities across the country have policies in place barring employees from donating or partaking in the political process. Even things like having a candidates sign in your yard can be grounds for dismissal.

Yesterday Senator Bernie Sanders released a strongly worded statement supporting Olbermann. You can read the whole thing here, but the key part I want to bring up is here:

"It is outrageous that General Electric/MSNBC would suspend Keith Olbermann for exercising his constitutional rights to contribute to a candidate of his choice. This is a real threat to political discourse in America and will have a chilling impact on every commentator for MSNBC.

Mixed Feelings On Olbermann

Posted 11/5/10 at 5:32pm by jamie

Keith_Olbermann_and_GlobeBy now I’m sure everyone has heard that Keith Olbermann has been suspended indefinitely from MSNBC for contributing to political campaigns without disclosing those contributions to his superiors at MSNBC.

There has been a lot of back and forth over this decision in the blogosphere and twitterverse today. I have mixed feelings on the story.

In Defense Of MSNBC

MSNBC does have a policy in place:

NBC and MSNBC TV require permission of the president of NBC News. (MSNBC.com is a joint venture of NBC Universal and Microsoft.)

"Anyone working for NBC News who takes part in civic or other outside activities may find that these activities jeopardize his or her standing as an impartial journalist because they may create the appearance of a conflict of interest.  Such activities may include participation in or contributions to political campaigns or groups that espouse controversial positions.  You should report any such potential conflicts in advance to, and obtain prior approval of, the President of NBC News or his designee."

Tea Leaves And Tea Baggery?

An interesting shake up in the House GOP today as Mike Pence announces he will step down as chairman of the GOP Conference. This could play into speculation of Pence throwing his name in the bid for the Republican nominee in 2012.

But things get even more interesting:

One thing to look for now that Rep. Mike Pence has stepped down as GOP Conference Chair, GOP sources tell NBC News that Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., may attempt to try and run for the position of GOP Conference Chairman.

(emphasis added)

Now that would be a very interesting replacement and one I’m sure a bunch of us on the left can get behind. We need more of this:

Bachmann

As the face of the GOP.

The Twisted Catholic Church

Posted 6/2/10 at 10:18pm by jamie

The Catholic Church is so twisted in their beliefs that it is beyond scarey. Preists can rape and torture children, yet they are allowed to continue to serve, but if a nun helps save a woman's life - well they get kicked out:

From Dave at Video Cafe:

A Phoenix nun along with a hospital Ethics Committee made the decision to go forward with a procedure that aborted an 11-week pregnancy and saved the life of the mother. Sister Margaret McBride was then speedily excommunicated by the Catholic church.

"In this tragic case, the treatment necessary to save the mother's life required the termination of an 11-week pregnancy. This decision was made after consultation with the patient, her family, her physicians, and in consultation with the Ethics Committee, of which Sr. Margaret McBride is a member," according to a statement from St. Joseph's hospital.

Cannon Lawyer Father Kevin O'Rourke told NBC News that in his view McBride should not have been punished. "A person knowingly and willingly performs an abortion, then that person is excommunicated. But my contention is that there is nothing knowingly and willingly done in this regard. They were acting, you see, to save the life of the woman and that was their main concern," he said.

Phil Griffin Slams David Shuster In An Email To A Viewer

Posted 4/9/10 at 9:37am by jamie

Mediaite has obtained an email from MSNBC boss Phil Griffin to a viewer who was upset over Shuster not being on the air. Here’s what Griffin said:

From: Griffin, Phil (NBC Universal)
Sent: Wed 4/07/10 11:16 PM

Sorry, but this is a business and I need team players. He was not moral, ethical or professional and that is not fair to the 500 people who work at msnbc.

Thanks for your note,
Phil

Anyone who knows anything about human resources would quickly describe Griffin’s email as nor moral, ethical or professional. Actually this email could very well give Shuster a way out of his contract if he decided to pursue it through arbitration. Of course that could be exactly what Griffin was thinking when he wrote it.

ABC News Does Massive Job Cuts

Posted 3/1/10 at 9:15am by jamie

Looks like the network news is in some trouble:

“I just looked out at the next five years and was concerned that we could not sustain doing what we were doing,” said David Westin, the president of ABC News, as he explained the decision last week to jettison up to 400 staff members, a quarter of the news staff, in the coming months.

But what is causing the problem? Sure ABC has their website, but I doubt that has ever been a serious source of income for them, so they can’t go with a Murdoch excuse.

Perhaps the answer lies within that paragraph I posted above: “jettison up to 400 staff members, a quarter of the news staff”. 1,600 staff members for their news operation? This is to produce a 1/2 hour show 7 nights a week and things like “This Week”. It sounds like the company is failing because of piss-poor management. Every body doesn’t need an assistant, and those assistants don’t need assistants.

Then how about salaries? In 2005 it was reported that Diane Sawyer was receiving a salary of $12 million per year. That’s before taking the top job. I can’t even imagine what it is now. It’s funny how people complain about baseball salaries, yet we see the same kind of corporate giveaways happening in the news industry and no one seems to bat an eye. That really has to change.

Conan Says No

Posted 1/12/10 at 3:48pm by jamie

I hate getting into this late night media war, but this is getting to interesting to pass up. Conan O’Brien is telling NBC that if they follow through with plans to return Leno to the 11:35 slot then he is out of there:

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

You can read the whole letter here.

Comcast Gets Their NBC

Posted 12/3/09 at 12:11pm by jamie

We knew this was coming:

The agreement will create a joint venture, with Comcast owning 51 percent and G.E. owning 49 percent. Comcast will contribute to the joint venture its stable of cable channels, which includes Versus, the Golf Channel and E Entertainment, worth about $7.25 billion, and will pay G.E. about $6.5 billion in cash, for a total of $13.75 billion. For now, the network will remain NBC Universal, but ultimately Comcast could decide to change the name.

I really wish the government would have stepped up and stopped this. We should be breaking up these mega-conglomerations instead of allowing them to expand.

Out Of 10800 Seconds, Morning Joe Spends 10 Seconds On Washington Cop Killings

Posted 11/30/09 at 9:06am by jamie

Absolutely fucking amazing. Scarborough dishonored the memory of the slain officers just to protect his BFF Huckabee. MSNBC should hang their head very low in shame today and Morning Joe should be cancelled.

UPDATE:
Within 8 minutes of his show starting, Dylan Ratigan started covering the shootings. NBC even has a reporter on the scene, yet Scarborough couldn’t be bothered to go to him. Ratigan even has Eliot Spitzer on to talk about Governors and clemency. Drop Scarborough and give Ratigan the morning show – that would be a big help for MSNBC.
