Reporter Admits To Creating Hagel Lie

Posted 2/20/13 at 12:37pm by jamie

So much has been said about Chuck Hagel since being nominated for Secretary of Defense that it's hard to keep track of it all. But Dan Friedman, a reporter for the New York Daily News, has admitted to stirring one rumor:

The revelation could have doomed President Obama’s nomination of Chuck Hagel to be secretary of defense: He gave a paid speech to a group called “Friends of Hamas.”

Fortunately for Hagel, this claim, which galloped across the Internet, was bogus. I know, because I was the unwitting source.

In the process, I became part of an inadvertent demonstration of how quickly partisan agendas and the Internet can transform an obvious joke into a Washington talking point used by senators and presidential wannabes.

Here’s what happened: When rumors swirled that Hagel received speaking fees from controversial organizations, I attempted to check them out.

On Feb. 6, I called a Republican aide on Capitol Hill with a question: Did Hagel’s Senate critics know of controversial groups that he had addressed?

Hagel was in hot water for alleged hostility to Israel. So, I asked my source, had Hagel given a speech to, say, the “Junior League of Hezbollah, in France”? And: What about “Friends of Hamas”?

The names were so over-the-top, so linked to terrorism in the Middle East, that it was clear I was talking hypothetically and hyperbolically. No one could take seriously the idea that organizations with those names existed — let alone that a former senator would speak to them.

Friedman ends with this:

I am, it seems, the creator of the Friends of Hamas myth. Doing my job, I erred in counting on confidentiality and the understanding that my example was farcical — and by assuming no one would print an unchecked rumor.

The Fund Cutting War

Posted 6/1/06 at 2:24pm by jamie

The decision by the Department of Homeland Security to cut anti-terrorism funding to the two cities attacked on 9/11 has started having major fallout. The New York Daily News has a front page article titled "Feds to city: drop dead" (h/t Raw Story)

The city was stunned yesterday to find that its share of federal anti-terror funds was slashed nearly in half by bureaucrats who said it has no national icons to protect and lousy defense plans.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff determined, however, that cities that have never been targeted by Al Qaeda — like Louisville, Atlanta and Omaha — deserve whopping increases.

"This is a knife in the back," fumed a furious Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. "As far as I'm concerned, the Department of Homeland Security has declared war on New York."

Mayor Bloomberg ridiculed Homeland Security's reasoning.

I read through the list of cities that received increases in funding and it is amazing. Most of the cities are heavily conservative and I was shocked to see that my hometown of Cincinnati was one of them. Cincinnati was a threat during World War 2 and the Cold War with GE being stationed here and also Proctor and Gamble, who within a couple hours could switch from making soap flakes to gun powder. This is of course no more.

The disbursement of anti-terrorism funds have constantly been under fire. States like Montana received more funding this year then places like New Jersey. It has become a hand out for the GOP and the money is not ear marked for true anti-terrorism measures. This is just another example of the right's version of "smaller government".

Bush - Cheney Relationship Woes

Posted 11/8/05 at 3:24pm by jamie

According to today's

New York Daily News
, the relationship between George Bush and Dick Cheney is
very bad.

WASHINGTON - The CIA leak scandal has peeled back the veil on the most
closely held White House secret of all: the subtle but unmistakable erosion
in the bond between President Bush and Vice President Cheney. Multiple
sources close to Bush told the Daily News that while the vice president
remains his boss' valued political partner and counselor, his clout has
lessened - primarily as a result of issues arising from the Iraq war.

"The relationship is not what it was," a presidential counselor said.
"There has been some distance for some time."

A senior administration official termed any such suggestion
"categorically false."

Several sources said the distance is certain to accelerate with the Oct.
28 indictment of Lewis (Scooter) Libby, Cheney's former chief of staff and
geopolitical soul mate.

"Cheney is wounded by this," a longtime Bush associate said.

Outwardly, there is little to suggest anything is amiss. Cheney, wife
Lynne and their two daughters were guests, for example, at last week's
A-list Bush dinner for the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

Earlier this year, Bush praised Cheney at a GOP campaign dinner as a
"steady adviser, the solid rock - and what a decent man he is. I'm proud to
be serving with him for four more years."

BREAKING: LIBBY INDICTED

Posted 10/28/05 at 6:01pm by jamie

Scooter Libby has been indicted on 5 counts as follows:

  • 2 counts of perjury
  • 2 counts of making false statements
  • 1 count of obstruction of justice

According to the New York Daily News,

Dave Addington
is coined to replace Scooter Libby. Addington was the
official who authored the memo justifying torture and holding terrorist
prisoners indefinitely without charge.

Whatever Already
has a detailed history on Addington.

Raw Story is also reporting that the
investigation is expanding to look into the operations of the State Department
and National Security Councils actions leading up to the war. Rove has not been
indicted yet but he is still very much in hot water as this saga continues.

Dark Days In A White House

Posted 10/24/05 at 6:21pm by jamie

It appears as though the White House is not the ideal place to be employed
right now. A scathing new report in the

New York Daily News
paints a dark and grim picture of a work atmosphere that
would make the most dedicated employee consider calling in sick.

Here are a few of the quotes from the article, if you wish you can view the
article in its entirety

here
.

"He's like the lion in winter," observed a political friend of Bush.
"He's frustrated. He remains quite confident in the decisions he has made.
But this is a guy who wanted to do big things in a second term. Given his
nature, there's no way he'd be happy about the way things have gone."

"This is not some manager at McDonald's chewing out the help," said a
source with close ties to the White House when told about these outbursts.
"This is the President of the United States, and it's not a pleasant sight."

"The President is just unhappy in general and casting blame all about,"
said one Bush insider. "Andy [Card, the chief of staff] gets his share. Karl
gets his share. Even Cheney gets his share. And the press gets a big share."

Bush is so dismayed that "the only person escaping blame is the President
himself," said a sympathetic official, who delicately termed such
self-exoneration "illogical."

"He must know that the way he did that, relying on his own judgment and
instinct, was not good," another key adviser said.

Bush's Lies = Time For Impeachment

Posted 10/20/05 at 3:40pm by jamie

Yesterday's explosive report in the New York Daily News (see article
here) of
George Bush having prior knowledge to of Rove's involvement in the leak has
sparked a firestorm on Capital Hill. Senator Charlie Schumer of New York has
already written the President asking him to come clean to congress and the
American people on his knowledge of the leak (view the complete letter at
The Talking
Points Memo
).

Now we are once again hearing rumors that Karl Rove actually got Plame's
identity from Robert Novak and when he was told of her Rove just said "yeah I
heard that too". Rove is also going on that he heard the information from Tim
Russert which conflicts with testimony Mr. Russert gave at an earlier time.

On July 9, 2003, columnist Robert Novak told Rove he was writing a column
that would report that Plame worked for the CIA, and Rove told the columnist
he had heard similar information, according to his testimony.

Novak published a column the next week that said Plame worked for the CIA
and had suggested that her agency send Wilson, a former ambassador, on a
mission that raised questions about prewar intelligence the Bush
administration used to justify invading Iraq.

Rove testified he told Libby about his contact with Novak about two days
after it occurred.

In testimony shown to Rove, Libby stated Rove had told him about his
contact with Novak and said he had told Rove about information he had gotten
about Wilson's wife from NBC newsman Tim Russert, according to a person
directly familiar with the information shown to Rove.

Plame Case Coming To A Close

Posted 10/19/05 at 3:54pm by jamie

According to an article in today's

New York Times
, Patrick Fitzgerald is not planning on releasing a report
into his findings. This heightens expectations that indictments will be coming
out of the two year old investigation. They are saying that they don't expect
Mr. Fitzgerald to take any actions in the case this week, pushing any findings
back to next week when the grand jury expires.

The New
York Daily News
also has an interesting article today, where they talk about
sources within the White House who have disclosed the fact that George Bush knew
Rove was involved in the leak:

Bush whacked Rove on CIA leak

BY THOMAS M. DeFRANK DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU CHIEF

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

WASHINGTON - An angry President Bush rebuked chief political guru Karl
Rove two years ago for his role in the Valerie Plame affair, sources told
the Daily News. "He made his displeasure known to Karl," a presidential
counselor told The News. "He made his life miserable about this."

Bush has nevertheless remained doggedly loyal to Rove, who friends and
even political adversaries acknowledge is the architect of the President's
rise from baseball owner to leader of the free world.

As special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald nears a decision, perhaps as
early as today, on whether to issue indictments in his two-year probe, Bush
has already circled the wagons around Rove, whose departure would be a
grievous blow to an already shell-shocked White House staff and a President
in deep political trouble.

Who's The Mole?

Posted 10/18/05 at 4:57pm by jamie

From reading the actual
New York Daily
News
article that Raw Story mentioned last night, it is not Cheney who has
turned over on the investigation but rather someone close to him. With that
going on, you can be certain the work atmosphere in Cheney's office is very
unpleasant. I bet everyone continues to look over their shoulder to see who is
watching who.

Cheney may be target of probe

BY JAMES GORDON MEEK, THOMAS M. DeFRANK and KENNETH R. BAZINET DAILY NEWS
WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - A special prosecutor's intensifying focus into who outed a
CIA spy has raised questions whether Vice President Cheney himself is
involved, knowledgeable sources confirmed yesterday. At least one source and
one reporter who have testified in the probe said U.S. Attorney Patrick
Fitzgerald is pursuing Cheney's role in the Valerie Plame affair.

In addition, at least six current and former Cheney staffers - most
members of the White House Iraq Group - have testified before the grand
jury, including the vice president's top honcho, Lewis (Scooter) Libby, and
two top Cheney national security lieutenants.

Cheney's name has come up amid indications Fitzgerald may be edging
closer to a blockbuster conspiracy charge - with help from a secret snitch.

"They have got a senior cooperating witness - someone who is giving them
all of that," a source who has been questioned in the leak probe told the
Daily News yesterday.

Cheney was questioned last year by prosecutors and has hired a private
attorney, former colleague Terrence O'Donnell, who declined to comment when
contacted by The News.

Cheney Rolling Over?

According to
Raw
Story
it very well could be the case :

New York Daily News source believes
senior White House official has flipped in leak case

10/17/2005 @ 9:54 pm Filed by RAW STORY

The case of outed CIA agent Valerie Plame is set to explode.

Advertisement The New York Daily News is set to report in Tuesday
editions that a well-placed source interviewed by the newspaper believes a
senior White House official has flipped and may be helping the prosecutor in
the case, RAW STORY has learned.

The Daily News will reveal that a top source believes that based on the
questioning of Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald and his other contacts
with the investigation, someone in the White House has turned.

All eyes are on Dick Cheney, the News says, as the investigation wraps
up
.

The piece follows on the heels of on a story by Bloomberg News and an
article by RAW STORY last week confirming that the prosecutor is probing the
Vice President.

Also under a microscope is the White House Iraq Group, an ad-hoc strategy
group started by Bush chief of staff Andrew Card aimed at selling the war in
Iraq.

The Pentagon's March

Pentagon to host
9/11 march, show

BY MICHAEL McAULIFF DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon will hold a massive march and country music
concert to mark the fourth anniversary of 9/11, Defense Secretary Donald
Rumsfeld said in an unusual announcement tucked into an Iraq war briefing
yesterday. "This year the Department of Defense will initiate an America
Supports You Freedom Walk," Rumsfeld said, adding that the march would remind
people of "the sacrifices of this generation and of each previous generation."

The march will start at the Pentagon, where nearly 200 people died on 9/11,
and end at the National Mall with a show by country star Clint Black.

Word of the event startled some observers. "I've never heard of such a
thing," said John Pike, who has been a defense analyst in Washington for 25
years and runs GlobalSecurity.org.

The news also reignited debate and anger over linking Sept. 11 with the war
in Iraq.

"That piece of it is disturbing since we all know now there was no
connection," said Paul Rieckhoff, an Iraq veteran who heads Operation Truth,
an anti-administration military booster.

Rieckhoff suggested the event was an ill-conceived publicity stunt. "I
think it's clear that their public opinion polls are in the toilet," he said.

Rumsfeld's walk had some relatives of 9/11 victims fuming.

"How about telling Mr. Rumsfeld to leave the memories of Sept. 11 victims
to the families?" said Monica Gabrielle, who lost her husband in the attacks.

Administration supporters insisted Rumsfeld was right to link Iraq and
9/11, and hold the rally.
