People Are Turning Off Cable News

Posted 3/14/11 at 11:32am by jamie

Maybe the news channels will wake up and realize what they are doing isn’t working:

After years of audience growth, cable news may have hit a wall.

According to the Project for Excellence in Journalism's annual State of the News Media report, cable news viewership for CNN, MSNBC and Fox News fell substantially in 2010 -- 13.7 percent in aggregate for a sharper decline than any other sector. Broadcast news, which has experienced declining viewership for years, was down another 3.4 percent in 2010.

The numbers are truly telling. The biggest loser is to be expected, CNN, which saw a decline of 37%. Up next is FOX, who saw a decline of 11% and the network with the smallest loss was MSNBC, with only a 5% decline.

I will admit I am part of the decline in viewership. I used to be one of those people that was glued to network news, but I finally got my fill of it. Having paid personalities tell me how I should think and feel just didn’t seem healthy. Instead when I watch a news network I want to see news. I know that might seem like a far-fetched idea, but really – is it that hard to do? Other countries have news networks that show news, why can’t ours? Are Americans really that incapable of drawing their own conclusions?

Eliot Spitzer To Co-Host New CNN Show With Kathleen Parker

Posted 6/23/10 at 12:22pm by jamie

Well this should be an interesting combination:

Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer and 2010 Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Kathleen Parker will co-host a new hour long CNN primetime news program starting in the fall as the nation prepares for the 2010 midterm election, the network announced Wednesday morning.

The yet-to-be-named “roundtable discussion” program will air at 8 p.m. ET replacing Campbell Brown.

CNN isn't hiding their intentions either:

“Other cable news channels force-feed viewers one narrow, predictable point of view; in contrast, CNN will be offering a lively roundup of all the best ideas – presented by two of the most intelligent and outspoken figures in the country,” Jon Klein, president of CNN/U.S., said in a statement released by the network. “Eliot and Kathleen are beholden to no vested interest – in fact, quite the opposite: they are renowned for taking on the most powerful targets and most important causes.”

Color me crazy, but this could just work out. People have been force to one side or the other at the 8pm hour. I'm one of those people who love hearing both sides, and this show should give us a chance at that.

I know I'll give it a chance.

There is one big question that remains. Now that MSNBC will have a new show on at the 10pm hour, hosted by Lawrence O'Donnell, will this new CNN show end up hurting Olbermann? As it is now people could watch the CNN show then catch Olbermann at 10. Once O'Donnell's show starts, then people would have to wait until 11pm to catch the Olbermann rerun, and that is local news time for a lot of people.

Clinton and Obama

Posted 1/14/08 at 9:41am by jamie

So all the talk in print and on the news channels this morning is how Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are going after each other. Also they are finally mentioning John Edwards, but that is only because he threw some criticism towards Clinton.

This would typically be nothing, but they are making such a big deal out of it. Wow an election where candidates go after each other - how would of thunk it! I guess the Republicans are too busy sipping cocoa and singing Kumbaya to argue with each other. Oh wait - they have been fighting each other, much longer than the Democrats. The media just shrugs that off.

No Confidence Vote On Monday

Posted 6/8/07 at 3:41pm by jamie

This will be an interesting vote:

The Senate will hold a “no confidence” vote on embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales this Monday, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, announced.

In a statement released Friday, Schumer said if all senators followed their conscience, “this vote would be unanimous.”

“However, the president will certainly exert pressure to support the attorney general, his longtime friend,” Schumer added. “We will soon see where people’s loyalties lie.”

The attorney general is under investigation by Congress over last year’s dismissal of eight U.S. attorneys.

Last month, Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, predicted Gonzales would resign before facing a “substantial” no-confidence vote.

“I think that if and when he sees that coming, that he would prefer to avoid that kind of an historical black mark,” the Pennsylvania senator told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on May 20.

But a day after Specter’s comments, Bush reiterated his support in Gonzales and denounced the prospect of a no-confidence vote as “pure political theater.”

Of course watching the news channels you would have no idea something like this was happening. I mean Paris is going back to jail. That is far more important than things like wars and the state of our nation. America is a sad, pathetic place any more.

A Little Observation On John and Elizabeth Edwards

Posted 3/23/07 at 11:34am by jamie

Since their announcement yesterday of the return of Elizabeth's cancer, the pundits have taken to the news channels to try and analyze why Edwards is staying in the race. People such as Rush Limbaugh have even gone as far as saying this was some big political stunt and if her cancer doesn't give him a bump in the polls, he will drop out.

To these pundits, I have an idea. Could there be a chance John decided to stay in and Elizabeth supported his decision because he truly believes in what he is doing? Why don't you give up all the conspiracy theories and look at what is probably the most obvious answer. Edwards has been coined as one of the "most honest" guys in politics, so why would he use such a life altering incident for political gain? With analysis like you are doing, it is no wonder that politics is so vile today.

A Quick Thought On Saddam

Posted 12/30/06 at 1:41pm by jamie

Last night when the news of his execution was made public, people started rejoicing. FOX News was giddy with the thought of video and pictures being published of the execution. True so much coverage was dedicated to this execution yesterday, including history lessons on hangings from CNN.

It is amazing to see how the right wingers are rejoicing so much over the news of Saddam's fate, yet they are the first ones to dish up excuses for Bush not capturing Osama, or even giving that much attention to him. Sure Saddam was a bad man and did horrible things, and his victims deserve justice - but don't the 3,000 Americans who lost their lives on 9/11 deserve justice? Instead the Bush apologists offer up excuses to why their justice has never been served. That is real American and compassionate of them.

Something else that struck me as interesting was all the old footage and photos of Saddam that was being aired yesterday. It seems that during this collage displayed on most news channels, they forgot one of the most famous pictures of Saddam. I figured I better go ahead and publish it for them:

saddamrumsfeld.jpg

So how does our former Secretary of Defense feel now that his former buddy has been executed? Perhaps this is why the execution was moved along so quickly. God forbid Saddam be put on trial and we hear about the people who helped supply him with most of the weapons he used against his own people. Perhaps the accomplices in his other crime can still face the Iraqi courts.

Reading More Into Virgil Goode's Words.

Posted 12/23/06 at 3:42pm by jamie

There has been much talk this week about Rep. Virgil Goode's comments regarding Muslim's in Congress:

A congressman said Thursday that he will not retract a letter warning that unless immigration is tightened, "many more Muslims will be elected" and use the Quran to take the oath of office.

Republican Rep. Virgil Goode triggered angry responses from a civil rights group and some colleagues with a letter this month to constituents concerned about a decision by Rep.-elect Keith Ellison of Minnesota, the first Muslim elected to Congress, to use the Quran when he is sworn in.

"I will not be putting my hand on the Quran," Goode said at a news conference Thursday at the Franklin County Courthouse.

While most seem to focus on this as an insult to Muslims (as it is), they seem to overlook the other major insult here. The bigoted Virgil Goode also insulted the people of Minnesota's 5th Congressional district. Ellison did not hide his religion during his campaign, and it actually became a big issue. All the news channels ran segments talking about the fact we could have the first Muslim in Congress. Furthermore, that did not stop 56% of the voters in MN-15 to go out and support Goode.

These citizens of the United States engaged in their Constitutional right of electing their leaders, and for that they get insulted by a member of Congress. That alone should be grounds for Vigil Goode to be kicked out of Congress and this country.

Three Years Of Hell

Posted 3/19/06 at 1:53pm by jamie

Three years ago tomorrow night was when our news channels filled with images of bombs exploding in Baghdad. 9:34pm est. time will mark the anniversary of the actual start of the invasion.

So where have we gone since then? Well we did make it to Baghdad with little effort. We did find Saddam Hussein. That’s about it for the good points..

Now here we sit 3 years later and where are we. We have lost 2,318 soldiers, over 30,000 Iraqi citizens; spent over half a trillion dollars (increasing by $200 million a day) and we sit here, isolated from the rest of the world. What does our President have to say about the war now?

"More fighting and sacrifice will be required," Bush said in his weekly radio address. "For some, the temptation to retreat and abandon our commitments is strong. Yet there is no peace, there's no honor and there's no security in retreat. So America will not abandon Iraq to the terrorists who want to attack us again."

Basically the Bush plan for Iraq is the same it has been since the invasion. Think of it as football. We see upsets time and time again. A team takes to the field with an over optimistic attitude because their opponents rated a large underdog. Of course that over optimistic team comes home with their heads held down low because they were just upset. I am not saying our outcome in Iraq will be the same because we can change the rules. We can redefine what we call a win. True in war, the only winner is war.

George Bush's New Job - Weatherman

Posted 6/10/05 at 5:51pm by jamie

Why should George Bush look into a job as a weather man? Well he has a knack
for dealing with the public, but most importantly, he is wrong more than right.

We all know by now that in the months leading up to September 11, the
President received intelligence that Osama was planning on attacking. Some
intelligence even suggested the use of airplanes as a weapon. But yet our leader
failed to act upon this, and dismissed these reports.

Fast forward a few months. George Bush receives intelligence that Saddam has
restarted his WMD programs, and tends to use it against the United States.
George now feels to even tell the people of the country and the world about
this. Furthermore he feels the need to go to war because of these reports.

So what is the problem here. Simple. The first reports turned out to be true
and over 3,000 people lost their lives because of our President's failure to
respond. The second reports turn out to be false, and lead to over 1700 of our
soldiers dying.

So our great President is batting 0 for 2 on interpreting intelligence
reports, and we have lost over 5,000 lives because of it. This is a terrible
track record and cries for regime change here at home. I put some of the blood
of all those lives lost on the hands of our President. He has failed, and failed
miserably. He could of saved all these lives but instead acted on what he felt
would be better for him and his financial interests and allowed all these poor
people to die.

If you ask me George Bush is nothing more than a cold hearted killer.
Even more cold heated than the BK killer or Jeffrey Dahmer. Those people acted
on a sick lust for death. George acted on greed. Those mass killers performed
the acts themselves to satisfy their needs. George let others commit the acts
because he is to scared to do his own dirty work.
