Could This Be The End Of YouTube?

Posted 5/27/08 at 9:56am by jamie

I certainly hope not, but this lawsuit doesn't look good:

A one billion dollar lawsuit against YouTube threatens internet freedom, according to its owner Google.

Google's claim follows Viacom's move to sue the video sharing service for its inability to keep copyrighted material off its site.

Viacom says it has identified 150,000 unauthorised clips on YouTube.

In court documents Google's lawyers say the action "threatens the way hundreds of millions of people legitimately exchange information" over the web.

The copyright battle has become insane. We really need better laws protecting the rights of the people making the material, but also laying out a clear path when that information can be shared.

For example. This year we have seen numerous times that debates have been aired and the network airing it has said "no distributing clips of it". Something involving our political process and the direction of our country should be considered public service and not fall under any restrictions. All but 2 debates aired only on cable networks, so what about the people without cable? It's not fair that they miss out on political discussion that could affect their future.

News items should also be the same. The public has a right to know what's going on, and not everyone can be in front of a television 24/7 or watch all the different networks. Public knowledge is a bedrock of democracy, and if we don't have it then our democracy suffers.

Here's another example of this from the article:

The company says the infringement also included the documentary An Inconvenient Truth which had been viewed "an astounding 1.5 billion times".

Blog Picks

Posted 6/16/06 at 7:22pm by jamie

While surfing the web and blogosphere throughout the day, I come across some great blog enteries. To make it easier to share with the readers of IntoxiNatio, I have added a new feature called "Blog Picks".

Blog Picks appears on the top of the main page with the news items. To view the blog picks, click the tab titled "Blog Picks". Your browser will request the list from the server through the magic of Ajax and Javascript, which means you will not have to wait for the entire front page to reload. This feature works on all major browsers that are up to date.

If you come across a blog post that should be mentioned, then please email the link to me at jamie@intoxination.net.

With this update, I also removed the "More IntoxiNation" button on the top menu bar and replaced it with a feeds button. This will take you to a page where you can add different sections of IntoxiNation to your favorite feed reader. Currently we have the Front Page, Hot News Items, Blog Picks and Videos that can be added to your newsreader. As always, you can add your favorite authore via their profile or posts.

Hope everyone enjoys and if there are any problems then please feel free to contact me.

Minor Site Update

Posted 3/11/06 at 3:48am by jamie

I posted yesterday about the new headlines section at the top of the page and that to view previous items you would have to go to the category. Well I modifies that today and added previous and next item links to that section. Clicking on those links will just load the new items into that section only. The rest of the page will not have to reload. This is dependent upon a javascript routine so if you do not have javascript enabled or are on very old browser then you will still have to go either to the archives or category to read older news items.

Some minor updates

As I go through trying to fine tune everything I have noticed a couple small problems with the site.

First off there was a couple days where it was slow loading. This was actually a problem with the hosting company. Thankfully they were quick to remedy the situation. It took a couple days because I was going through making certain it was nothing on my end causing it.

The news items that appeared on the front page (the ones in the box) are no longer there. Well they are but, as you may have noticed, they are now on the top in the "Latest News" section. For those who have visited IntoxiNation for awhile you may remember the hold scrolling headlines I had on the sidebar. Well I have eliminated that. It was nice but caused for a small hangup while it loaded. It also crashed dependent upon what was coming out of news feeds and their was always things we may not have been that concerned about.

The new "Latest News" section is totally controlled by us. Throughout the day as we find articles of interest we will post them there along with one or two sentences about the article. The headline will take you to the actual article and if there are more than one articles about the same subject that are interesting, we will place a link to the other article(s) within that short description. Of course you can comment on the articles here via the comment link.

To view previous News Items, simply click on the News Item category on the left or go to the archive to that date. One small warning. The sites that host the articles don't always keep them up that long. Some only do so for two weeks so the article link may not work after a certain amount of time.
