number of soldiers killed in iraq

3,308 And Other News Missed

Today the number of soldiers killed in Iraq reached 3,308, including 3 soldiers killed today.

Also under the radar is the U.K.'s decision to drop the phrase "war on terror":

The British government has stopped using the phrase "war on terror" to refer to the struggle against political and religious violence, according to a Cabinet minister's prepared remarks for a Monday speech.

International Development Secretary Hilary Benn, a rising star of the governing Labour Party, says in a speech prepared for delivery in New York that the expression popularized by President Bush after the Sept. 11 attacks strengthens terrorists by making them feel part of a bigger struggle.

Ironic. When the Democrats tried to do this they were called "terrorist lovers" amongst other hateful things by the rabid right. Do they feel the same way about our number one ally? Will the Republicans in Congress, as well as the White House commence an attack against Downing Street the same way they did against the Democrats? Time will tell.

BREAKING: Charges To Be Dropped Against Cindy

This just in from NBC:

WASHINGTON - Charges against antiwar protester Cindy Sheehan, who was
arrested after an incident involving a T-shirt she wore to the State of the
Union address, will be dropped, officials told NBC News Wednesday.

U.S. Capitol Police took Sheehan away in handcuffs and charged her with
unlawful conduct, a misdemeanor, when she showed up to President Bush’s
address Tuesday night wearing a shirt that read, “2245 Dead. How many more?”
— a reference to the number of soldiers killed in Iraq.

But Capitol Police will ask the U.S. attorney's office to drop the
charges, NBC News’ Mike Viqueira reported Wednesday.

Article continues here.

Sue them to hell and back Cindy. They can drop the charges but it won't give
back the embarrassment they caused you last night.

The State of Iraq

Well this past week, we heard that Rumsfeld could be
looking at pulling troops out starting as early as next spring, effectively
setting a “timetable” which the President said would not be done. Rumsfeld also
went to Iraq to push the Iraqi government to speed up their work on developing a
democracy and securing their land. So now with that all said lets see how things
are going.

Today we learn about five US soldiers being killed in Iraq
in two separate incidents of roadside bombs. This brings the US total number of
soldiers killed in Iraq to 1796 per ICasualities.org.

We also learned on this day that Iraq is seeking an extra
month to finish authoring their constitution. Something that is sure to delay
troop withdrawals. Glad Rumsfeld went there and told them to hurry it up.

To make matters even worse, Sunni leaders were able to obtain a petition with
one million signatures asking for the immediate withdrawal of US and coalition
forces in Iraq. This was presented at a demonstration outside the Green Zone
yesterday in which approximately 1,000 Sunnis demonstrated.
