MTP Exclusive! John McCain

Steve Benen explains:

I especially loved the "Exclusive!" with the exclamation point, as if this were a rare, special occurrence.

For those keeping score at home, as of this weekend, there will have been 47 Sundays since President Obama's inauguration in January. With this 16th appearance on a Sunday morning talk show this week, John McCain will have been a guest on one of the programs every 2.9 weeks. No other official in the country has been sought out by bookers this often.

Since the president took office, McCain has been on "This Week" three times (September 27, August 23, and May 10), "Fox News Sunday" three times (July 2, March 8, and January 25), CNN's "State of the Union" three times (October 11, August 2, and February 15), and "Face the Nation" four times (October 25, August 30, April 26, and February 8). His appearance on "Meet the Press" this weekend will be his third (December 6, July 12, and March 29).

This pattern should really be troubling to the GOP, especially the more conservative end of the party. The Sunday talking heads act as though McCain is the defacto mouth piece for the party, and he clearly isn’t. On top of that, this love of McCain is probably a big factor in the decline of viewership when it comes to Sunday talk shows. It’s old and stale, much like McCain himself.

$38 Billion From Overdraft Fees?

Posted 8/10/09 at 8:08am by jamie

This is why we also need banking reform:

US banks stand to collect a record $38.5bn in fees for customer overdrafts this year, with the bulk of the revenue coming from the most financially stretched consumers amid the deepest recession since the 1930s, according to research. The fees are nearly double those reported in 2000.

The finding is likely to increase public hostility towards the financial sector, which has been under political pressure to ease the burden on consumers by increasing credit availability and lending more fairly after being bailed out by taxpayers.

It used to be if you over drafted your account then you paid a fee once per occurrence and that was it. Now a lot of banks charge per day, making it even harder to get out of the red. Even worse is the fact that with this sinister way to squeeze money out of customers, banks still needed us to bail them out. The whole thing is criminal.

So Where Has Nader Been?

It's funny that we seem to only have Nader popping up every 4 years now. In the past year we have seen enormous consumer problems. Food recalls are becoming a daily occurrence. Countless items from China have been recalled and Americans are paying record amounts for oil, while the oil companies are enjoying record profits. Sounds like a perfect time for a "consumer advocate", doesn't it? So why hasn't Nader been out front speaking up on these issues?

It sounds to me like Ralph is more worried about his own political aspirations then he is about what got him to the point he is today. Screw the consumer, Ralphy boy wants to be President!

Another Chapter Of "Winning Hearts and Minds"

This is becoming an all to common occurrence:

U.S.-led coalition jets bombed a compound suspected of housing al-Qaida militants in eastern Afghanistan, killing seven boys and several insurgents, officials said Monday.

Clashes in the south killed a Dutch soldier, while dozens of suspected insurgents were left dead, officials said.

In the capital, police said they have detained a suspect in connection with the deadly bus bombing that killed at least 35 people, most of them police trainers.

Yet when Clinton went after Osama back in 98, the Republicans yelled and complained of "collateral damage".

We Remember the Perils of Terrorism

Prime Minister Tony Blair said the world has been ignoring
the threats of terrorism since the “wake-up call” of 9/11.

"September 11 for me was a wake up call. Do you know what I
think the problem is? That a lot of the world woke up for a short time and then
turned over and went back to sleep again," Blair said in an article on
CNN. I feel he is misled to some extent.

There are plenty of reminders of terror in the world. One
has to look no further than Iraq, where suicide bombings are an almost daily
occurrence. The problem is, when they get reported, then the right calls out
that the liberal media is being biased and not showing everything happening in
Iraq. Perhaps they want this “reminder” of terrorism to be ignored. That in its
self would contribute to the worlds “lazy” approach to terrorism.

The truth of the matter is, our leaders ignored terrorism.
They took their sites of off our true enemy in order to invade Iraq. This would
explain why Tony Blair refuses to admit a connection between the London bombings
and their presence in Iraq, even though al Qaeda has said that is the reasoning
and promised more attacks on Europe if they don’t withdrawal from Iraq by August
15.
