Politics Before Economy

Posted 6/22/11 at 9:30am by jamie

People who believe the Republicans want to turn this economy around are sadly mistaken:

The concern arises as numerous top Republicans react coldly to the prospect of temporarily reducing the payroll tax burden on employers and employees -- to juice the economy before federal spending draws down in the years ahead.

Traditionally, and particularly in tough economic times, this and a handful of other stimulative policies have enjoyed bipartisan support. But with the outcome of the 2012 election likely to hinge on the nation's economic trajectory, the GOP is mysteriously rethinking those positions. And Democrats are starting to note of the suspicious timing.

Got that? The Republicans are opposing tax cuts because it might hurt their chances in the elections next year. This is another case of "party before country" and anyone supporting Republicans should be ashamed of that fact.

Of course the Republicans don't deserve all the blame on this. What they are doing is just playing the new system of politics that has been created in this country. Politics has become a multi-billion dollar entertainment industry and by default any politician isn't a good sportsman. They will lie, cheat and steal to come out on top. The biggest failure this highlights is that of the free market, especially when it filters down into our elections.

From Your “Liberal” Newsweek

george_will_2George Will has bestowed upon himself the duty to name America’s “worst politician”, and declares Alan Grayson the winner:

There are hundreds of plausible nominees for the title of America’s Second-Smarmiest Politician, but surely the top spot is un-contested. Americans of all political persuasions can come together in affirming one proposition: Public life would be improved by scrubbing Rep. Alan Grayson from it. This act of civic hygiene probably will be performed Nov. 2 by voters of Florida’s Eighth Congressional District. Polls indicate that a majority of them plan to deny Grayson, 52, a second term by electing his resonantly named opponent, Daniel Webster.

Grayson, never missing an opportunity to live down to his reputation, ridicules Webster’s “18th-century name.” Given Grayson’s relentless advertising of his intellectual shortcomings, it is surprising that he recognizes the name.

I’ll admit that Grayson does go over the top in the rhetoric against his opponents at time, but to be labeled the “worst politician” – really? He is worse than Stephen Broden who thinks a violent overthrow of the U.S. government should be on the table?

I have to think that George Will is the worst columnist in America and one that uses his pen to push intellectual dishonesty.

Majority Leader Schumer?

Posted 5/20/10 at 8:35am by jamie

Not really sure how I take this:

During his three-decade legislative career, Schumer, 59, has developed a reputation as a razor-elbowed, shamelessly self-serving, media-addicted political monster. He is also arguably the single most effective lawmaker of his generation.

Now, with confidant Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) hanging on to his seat by a thread, the Brooklynite is nearing the goal line of his long game. Succeeding Reid would make Schumer the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in American history and, more important for the uber-competitive politician, the first among peers. Schumer has thrust himself into the center of issues ranging from jobs to immigration to Supreme Court hearings, but as that momentum has carried him into a more intimate arena where popularity matters, the grating architect of the current Democratic majority has become noticeably more collegial. Perhaps not coincidentally, his colleagues see him as the front-runner to be their leader.

I believe Schumer will be much more effective than Harry Reid in leading, but his politics do bother me at times. Take the Michael Mukasey confirmation. Schumer joined Feinstein as the only two Democrats to vote for him, citing “he’s the best we will get”. That’s a pretty piss-poor excuse for approving the nation’s top law enforcer.

And Who Would An Independent Crist Caucus With?

Posted 4/28/10 at 8:00am by jamie

If Charlie Crist ends up running as an Independent in the Florida Senate race and wins, the big question is who will he caucus with? I asked this question in a post a couple of weeks ago and now Crist has been asked about it in an interview (via TPM):

Q If you win as an independent, which party would you caucus with in Washington - the Republicans or Democrats?
A You're way ahead of me. One day at a time.

Here he has played the typical role of politician when it comes to evading questions, but it is interesting that he doesn’t seem so dedicated to the Republicans to answer that he will caucus with them. Even Joe Lieberman said he would caucus with the Democrats when he was facing losing the primary. The answer really leaves me wondering if Crist isn’t considering jumping ship if he wins as an independent. Now that would be very interesting.

John Boehner Constantly Claims Federal Money Doesn’t Work… BUT

Posted 2/25/10 at 8:24pm by jamie

It amazes me every time I hear Boehner decry federal money as being a failure. He tried to do it on the stimulus by saying there were no stimulus projects happening in Ohio, despite one going on a couple of miles from his own house. Now we have this issue:

Nearly a year and a half after federal lawmakers gave Butler County $4.2 million to deal with the housing crisis, county leaders are still trying to figure out what to do with it.

With only six months to go before the federal government takes unused money back, commissioners heard a list of options today, Feb. 25, from county Community Development Director Donna Everson.

This money is from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, a program created in 2008 to help combat high foreclosures. You know, 2008, a time when Bush was President.

Now for some facts:

  • Butler County is the home of John Boehner (and me)
  • Butler County is 100% Republican run.

Enough facts. Now see the problem? It’s not that the programs don’t work – it’s that Republicans don’t know what the hell to do with them. People have been losing their houses around here and there’s money sitting there to help, yet the corrupt Republicans that run this county just sit there doing nothing. These are all friends of Boehner and as our representative, he should be working to remedy this problem instead of playing politician all the time.

Cory Booker Is One Awesome Mayor

Posted 1/4/10 at 3:41pm by jamie

From Mashable:

As the snow piled up on New Year’s Eve, Jersey resident Ravie Rave didn’t call a snow plow service to take care of her 65-year-old father’s walk — she tweeted at Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who showed up shortly with shovels and salt.

Booker, who has more than a million Twitter followers, is a regular man-about-town when it comes to the microblogging service (remember that whole thing with Conan?), but this level of responsiveness is extreme, even for the sometimes to-good-to-be-true politician.

And if you don’t follow Cory on Twitter, you really should. He is the most engaging politician I have ever found on there.

Birther To Give Rebuttal Tonight

Posted 9/9/09 at 12:49pm by jamie

Yes the GOP has no one else to turn to other than the lunatic birthers. Tonight Louisiana Rep. Charles Boustany will be delivering the rebuttal, and here you can see him in his lunatic crazy fashion.

Adding – the GOP had one other rebuttal to President Obama addressing a joint session of Congress. Interesting enough it was another politician from Louisiana, who is also on the lunatic fringe (hint – his initials are Bobby Jindhal). I guess learning lessons is really rough from the Republicans.

Rejecting Stimulus Money – All For Politics

Here is Worst Persons from April 22 of this year. Pay attention to the first person that Olbermann names:

Just some lonely county commissioner here in Ohio, but now he is planning on becoming a little bit bigger of a name:

Warren County Commissioner Mike Kilburn told an Enquirer reporter Friday that he’s considering running against U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt in the 2010 primary.

"I have always said it’s important to vote for Christians and conservatives," Kilburn said. "But the conservatives have lost their way and I’m not willing to fall into that trap."

Hackery By Fournier

Posted 3/25/09 at 10:52am by jamie

The AP’s Ron Fournier is at it again, and with the help of the main headline on Drudge. In a piece entitled “Analysis: Teleprompter telegraphs Obama caution”, Fournier makes it sound like Obama relied totally on a teleprompter during last night’s presser:

What kind of politician brings a teleprompter to a news conference?

A careful one.

President Barack Obama took no chances in his second prime-time news conference, reading a prepared statement in which he took both sides of the AIG bonus brouhaha and asked an anxious nation for its patience.

So Fournier leaves you with this feeling that the entire thing was staged, maybe even the actual Q&A section. He does clarify a little bit more later on:

The teleprompter was no help during the question-and-answer session (reporters don't signal their intentions), but Obama was no less careful during that give and take.

Obama’s opening remarks were really short, only taking about 10 minutes out of the hour long event. So Ron Fournier decides to focus only on that first ten minutes, and leave the quick skimming readers with the impression that’s how the whole thing went.

And since Obama had the teleprompter and played it safe, it left the wingnuts with nothing. Here’s how Drudge is pushing this story:

For Or Against Obama’s Iraq Plan?

Posted 2/28/09 at 10:33am by jamie

The media is in a frenzy about the Democrats getting ready to “fight” President Obama on his Iraq plan. Of course they are – the media loves anything that might have to do with Democratic infighting.

Personally, I support Obama’s plan. Would I like to see all troops out next year? Of course. But I trust Obama. As matter of fact Obama has given us more reason to trust him than any other politician in history. In his first 40 days he has worked to deliver on an unprecedented amount of campaign promises. So since Obama hasn’t given me any reason to not trust him, I am going to take him for his word and judgment. If he really believes that we need 50,000 troops to remain, then we need that. I want what’s best for my country, not what best aligns with my own political belief.

Also just think back to Bush. Constantly Bush said he would listen to his commanders. For years now the commanders in Afghanistan have been yelling for more troops as that region continues to deteriorate. Bush ignored them, and now we got a bigger mess there then when we first entered that war. So the fact that Obama is proving that he is willing to listen and learn from our military leaders is a big bonus, and something we didn’t see in the past eight years.

But I also agree with the Democrats who are against this plan, and would rather see all our troops pulled out. It also makes me proud to be a Democrat.

Let’s compare this to the recent stimulus battle. Three Republican senators broke with their party to vote for the bill. Were they commended on serving their constituents or personal beliefs that got them elected? No. Instead they are facing punishment from their party.

More Religious Leaders Snub The Law

Posted 11/14/08 at 8:37am by jamie

Here's another one for the IRS to investigate:

A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil."

The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed Sunday to parishioners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.

"Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president," Newman wrote, referring to Obama by his full name, including his middle name of Hussein.

If these people who claim to be working for God want to continue to ignore the laws of this land, then it is time for them to start paying taxes. It's that simple. You don't play by our rules, we won't either - including the ones you like.

Bomb Bomb Bomb - Bomb Bomb McCain

Posted 10/8/08 at 12:21am by jamie

Wow did McCain bomb tonight. Holy shit! HuffPo has the rundown of the news networks, who all gave it to Obama (even FOX). Instead of spending time writing out my words on this, I am going to let Andrew Sullivan speak for me:

This was, I think, a mauling: a devastating and possibly electorally fatal debate for McCain. Even on Russia, he sounded a little out of it. I've watched a lot of debates and participated in many. I love debate and was trained as a boy in the British system to be a debater. I debated dozens of times at Oxofrd. All I can say is that, simply on terms of substance, clarity, empathy, style and authority, this has not just been an Obama victory. It has been a wipe-out.It has been about as big a wipe-out as I can remember in a presidential debate. It reminds me of the 1992 Clinton-Perot-Bush debate. I don't really see how the McCain campaign survives this.

I feel the exact same way. It seems as though many on the right are echoing those thoughts tonight. Markos has a great rundown of other conservatives who weren't impressed at all.

Another thing - should McCain thank Obama? Remember when McCain wanted to do all these town halls with Obama? Well we see what that may have looked like. Of course McCain maybe thought he needed practice before the big one tonight, which speaks badly in itself that a seasoned politician like McCain would need practice against the "inexperienced" Obama.

Madonna Enrages Camp McCain

Posted 8/25/08 at 10:17am by jamie

Everybody at once - "awwwww":

John McCain's campaign hit back at Madonna on Sunday after the pop diva kicked off her world tour with a concert that bracketed the US presidential candidate with Adolf Hitler.

McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds angrily condemned the segment of Madonna's concert in Cardiff on Saturday that appeared to draw a comparison between McCain, Hitler and Zimbabwean strongman Robert Mugabe.

"The comparisons are outrageous, unacceptable and crudely divisive all at the same time," Bounds said in a statement reported by Fox News.

"It clearly shows that when it comes to supporting Barack Obama, his fellow worldwide celebrities refuse to consider any smear or attack off limits."

How dare Madonna! Doesn't she know that when using Hitler analogies to compare ones political adversary, the Republicans hold the copyright? There is tons of video out there showing Republicans on the floors of the House and Senate comparing Democrats to Hitler. Now that the tables have been turned, even though not by another politician, John McCain cries foul. Everyone give him a big "whaaaaaaa".

The GOP's "Diversity"

Posted 8/20/08 at 7:18pm by jamie

Rick Davis on the line up of speakers for the GOP convention:

"I think one of the things that is important, especially for John McCain, as unique a politician as he is, is to demonstrate the diversity and differences of ideology I would say of our party," Davis said. "I think one of the things that people forget about is we are not a very monolithic as a party. We really want to show some of that."'

Let's see this melting pot of "diversity" Davis is talking about:

s-STARS-large.jpg

Looks like a bunch of old white guys to me. And what about the differences in ideology? The only ideology these guys have is wanting more wars. Yeah this is a shining example of the GOP platform - kill everyone in the name of whatever excuse they can make up!

The Truth Hurts

Posted 8/11/08 at 3:28pm by jamie

Ta-Nehisi Coates delivers that truth about the Clinton campaign:

Woflson claims that Edwards and Clinton voters were the same. Really? What happened in Wisconsin? What happened in Indiana? (you know what I mean) What happened in Virginia? This is, ultimately, why I'm glad Clinton lost. Accountability does not exist with these guys, and in that, they really are Bush-lite. They had millions of dollars, front-runner status and, allegedly, the greatest politician of our era stomping for them--and they got their asses handed to them. But they can't come to terms with it.

(emphasis added)

Instead of moving on and accepting their own failures (see Mark Penn), Wolfson continues to try and bring down the whole party by finger pointing their way out of any fault for their loss. They tried to make the Clinton campaign a campaign of old, attacking and slandering the opponent at every turn. Voters are tired of this, especially in the Democratic Party, and the longer Howard Wolfson keeps this up the more damage he will do to any of Clinton's future plans for a White House run. Hillary Clinton needs to throw Wolfson under the bus now. He is on a destructive path that threatens to bring down his own candidate.
