Why Do Republicans Love Pardoning Murderers?

Posted 1/12/12 at 11:10am by jamie

Former RNC chairman and darling of the right, Haley Barbour, has created a political tsunami:

A law-and-order Republican governor, Haley Barbour of Mississippi, has given full pardons or clemency to 208 inmates, including 14 convicted murderers, setting off a political uproar over the limits of executive power in the traditionally patriarchal South.

Mr. Barbour, a popular two-term governor who was term-limited from serving more, signed the pardons before leaving office on Tuesday. The surprise spree caught both Republicans and Democrats off stride, and it suggested that Barbour, who had flirted with running for the White House last year, may be leaving politics for good.

It has become so bad that a judge had to step up and actually block the pardons:

A Mississippi judge Wednesday evening issued a temporary injunction forbidding the release of any more prisoners pardoned or given clemency by outgoing Gov. Haley Barbour, whose actions created an uproar.

The pardons include four convicted murderers and a convicted armed robber who were released Sunday. The five now must contact prison officials on a daily basis as their fate is adjudicated.

The pardons are "a slap in the face to everyone in law enforcement and Gov. Barbour should be ashamed," said state Attorney General Jim Hood.

America Is Broken In More Ways Than One

Posted 9/13/11 at 8:10am by jamie

Last week during his address to Congress, President Obama talked about our crumbling infrastructure. One project he highlighted was the Brent Spence bridge, which connects Cincinnati to Northern Kentucky. This bridge is a part of the most major north/south corridor in the United States  - I-75. It is a vital part of transportation, meaning it’s a vital part of commerce. If it were to be unexpectedly shutdown, it would be a nightmare not only for the greater Cincinnati area, but far a large portion of the eastern United States.

The following day this area got another warning about the deteriorating bridge. In Louisville the I-64 bridge crossing the Ohio River into Indiana was suddenly shutdown because of cracks.  The video on this page shows the traffic nightmare commuters experienced yesterday morning from the closure of this bridge.

While our leaders have spent the past decade engaged in extreme partisan warfare, America has fallen apart. We have a Republican Party that looks at replacing these important parts of our infrastructure and economy as being “pork”.  Remember this scene?

How Republicans Want America To Look

Posted 6/13/10 at 10:05am by jamie

Here's a view of a Republican America:

From Think Progress:

Yesterday, Chevron discovered a leaking pipeline that was spewing 50 gallons of crude oil per minute into Red Butte Creek in Salt Lake City, UT. By the time crews capped the leak, more than 21,000 gallons — between 400-500 barrels — of oil had spilled out, “coating geese and ducks” and closing the city’s largest park.

This was just days after Utah's Republican Governor, Gary Herbert, called for more drilling. Yes - more drilling, more destroying of America's envrionment. That seems to be the wishes of the GOP and it's an assault on the place we all call home.

If NY-20 Is A Test For Obama

Posted 4/5/09 at 9:47pm by jamie

Then the special election held in Louisiana yesterday for the state senate district 16 seat, had to be a test for Bobby Jindhal. And guess what? He lost – big time:

Baton Rouge lawyer Dan Claitor beat businessman and fellow Republican Lee Domingue — the candidate with Gov. Bobby Jindal’s backing — to win the state Senate District 16 seat in Saturday’s special election.

Claitor garnered 11,713 or 66  percent of the vote to Domingue’s 6,114 or 34 percent, based on complete but unofficial election returns.

Compare that to the NY-20 race, which is still going back and forth by a handful of votes.

There is a really good rundown of the results over at MyDD.  I can’t wait to hear how Republicans attempt to spin this. So we have all our ducks in a row, here’s where we stand:

  • Chris Murphy is ahead, but very slightly in NY-20, which is a very conservative district. To the Republicans this is a sign of a rebuttal of Obama’s agenda.
  • A Democrat beats out a Republican endorsed by the state’s Republican Governor in Louisiana. Also this occurred in a very conservative district. Oh and that governor is supposed to be one of the front runners for the GOP in 2012.

So if NY-20 was a rebuttal of Obama, then we can only describe what happened in Louisiana as a flat out kicking to the curb of the GOP’s 2012 hope. There is no other way to describe this, but I’m sure the GOP will have some great spin to put on it in the coming days.

Right Wing Extremist Trying To Starve Citizens

Or Republican Governor refuses stimulus money because of some failed far right ideology:

When President Obama signed the Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act last week, it included three different provisions to benefit unemployed workers. The first provided funding to states that allowed for a $25 per week increase in benefits. The second extended the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program which gives 20 weeks of federally-funded unemployment benefits to individuals “who had already collected all regular state benefits,” while the third provision widened the pool of people eligible to receive unemployment benefits.

Today, however, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal announced his intention to oppose changing state law to allow his Lousiana citizens to qualify for the second two unemployment provisions. Jindal said the state would only be accepting money to increase the unemployment insurance payments for those who currently qualify</a> for unemployment insurance.

No Family?

Posted 9/4/08 at 10:11am by jamie

The Republicans have circled the wagons this week around Sarah Palin and her family. Well it seems like that plan is backfiring:

For two days, the chorus from Republicans on TV news and in the halls of the convention has been resounding: Back off and let the Palin family be. "That's out of bounds," said Minnesota's Republican governor, Tim Pawlenty. "There's no need to be intrusive and pry into that."

This is followed by a whole list of how the GOP is using Palin's family, but one part really stuck out at me:

_The extremely cute and bubbly Piper Palin, 7, made her debut on her mother's behalf, appearing in a video on John McCain's daughter's blog. "Vote for my mommy and John McCain," she said, giggling as Meghan McCain grinned.

So I found the video they are talking about:

Yeah it's cute and so is Piper, but why is it fine and dandy for this video to appear, yet Obama was under fire for doing that interview with his daughters? Seems like we got more of the GOP double standards at play here.

Perhaps it could even be seen as racist. "We like seeing the cute little white girls, but don't show the cute little black girls!" I know that's stretching it, but the McCain campaign is stretching it when they call reporting on Palin sexist.

Hillary Wants Michigan And Florida To Count

Posted 3/7/08 at 2:26pm by jamie

But only if they count the way she wants them to:

I would not accept a caucus. I think that would be a great disservice to the 2 million people who turned out and voted. I think that they want their votes counted. And you know a lot of people would be disenfranchised because of the timing and whatever the particular rules were. This is really going to be a serious challenge for the Democratic Party because the voters in Michigan and Florida are the ones being hurt, and certainly with respect to Florida the Democrats were dragged into doing what they did by a Republican governor and a Republican Legislature. They didn't have any choice whatsoever. And I don't think that there should be any do-over or any kind of a second run in Florida. I think Florida should be seated.

On other words, she wants the delegates based upon the vote that already happened. Thankfully Howard Dean is the chairman and not a Clinton.

I hate to say it, but, she is sounding more like Bush everyday. The rules are good and should be followed, if only they benefit you.

Blue Kentucky

Posted 11/6/07 at 8:21pm by jamie

Just like we went through here in Ohio last year, now our neighbor to the south kicks out their corrupt Republican Governor:

Democrat Steve Beshear harnessed voter frustration over ethics and Gov. Ernie Fletcher’s 2005 pardons of his aides to unseat the Republican incumbent.

Beshear, a former lieutenant governor and attorney general, also completed an unlikely political comeback by winning the race for the governor’s office — a position he sought unsuccessfully 20 years ago.

Fletcher, meanwhile, saw a reversal of his 10-point 2003 election victory that came with campaign promises of “cleaning up the mess in Frankfort” and ending “waste, fraud and abuse.”

No room for crooks in this country anymore!

Every single headline involves Republicans. Consider all the other scandals added to this:

  • Cunningham
  • Ney
  • Delay
  • Libby
  • Scafavian
  • Abramoff
  • Claude Allen
  • Foley
  • Lester Crawford
  • Col. Republican Governor candidate Bob Beauuprez
  • Bill Frist
  • Dennis Hastert land deal
  • Dennis Haster's cover-up of Foley
  • NV Republican Governor candidate Gibbons
  • Rep. Don Sherwood
  • Mit Romney and his legal problems involving the Big Dig collapse

Plus all the other ones I have missed. Of course the Republicans continue to lie to the American people and treat them like they are ignorant infidels and say that the problems are equal on both sides of the aisle. That is denial and denial is the first sign that someone does not want to change.

BREAKING: Ky Gov. Indicted

Posted 5/11/06 at 8:53pm by jamie

Just now coming in that a grand jury in Frankfort, Kentucky has indicted Republican Governor Ernie Fletcher on misdemeanor charges in connection with state hiring practices. The corruption keeps coming from the GOP.

Hey KY - Welcome to Ohio now where we can share in the dis-honor of having criminals in the governor's mansion.

I will have more on this after dinner.

Ohio Primary Update - Governor Race (Update 2)

Posted 5/3/06 at 3:01am by jamie

Blackwell has been declared the winner in the Ohio Republican Governor Primary:

Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell won the GOP nomination for governor Tuesday after campaigning as the best candidate to deliver his party from a year of polical scandals.

With more than half of precincts reporting, Blackwell led Attorney General Jim Petro with 55 percent of the vote.

Incidentally, the Democrat Primary is still a run away. Ted Strickland is still ahead by 56 percent. The Democrats have shown much more unity for their candidate than the Republicans have. This is a great sign for the fall.

GET OUT TO VOTE: This Week's Primaries

Posted 5/1/06 at 3:59pm by jamie

Tomorrow (Tuesday, May 2nd) there will be primaries in Indiana, North Carolina and my own state of Ohio.

I will be keeping the blog up to date on the returns here in Ohio. We have a couple hot races that are gaining some national attention.

First we have Jean "Full Of" Schmidt running against former Congressman Bob McEwen in the OH-2 race. This race has already been dirty on the part of Schmidt with her receiving a reprimand from the State Elections Commission last week for lying.

On the state front we have a heated primary for Republican Governor. The race is between Ken Blackwell, who helped Bush get the White House in 2004 and Jim Petro. We also have a primary for Democrat Governor between Ted Strickland and Bryan Flannery. I officially stand behind Ted Strickland as he seems the best choice. Current polls how that Ted Strickland has a strong lead over Ken Blackwell in the November election.

If you live in one of these states then do not forget to go out and vote. If you know someone who does not have the means to get to their polling station then by all means, please offer them a ride. The larger turnout for Democrats the better.

Ohio's Republican Governor's Primary Turns Nasty

Posted 2/22/06 at 9:10pm by jamie

OHIO. Eleventh Commandment ... What Eleventh Commandment? The GOP primary for Governor took a sudden nasty turn in new TV and radio spots. The ads also blast retiring Governor Bob Taft (R). Secretary of State Ken Blackwell went on this air this week with commercials attacking GOP primary rival Jim Petro for lacking integrity. Here's the full script: continued here.

Make America Aware To Her Weakened State

Posted 12/5/05 at 2:25pm by jamie

Yesterday the heads of the 9/11 commission were on Meet the Press and told
Tim Russert that we were not prepared for another attack. This has sparked a
great deal of attention from the media:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is still unprepared for another
inevitable terrorist attack after not doing enough to improve communications
for emergency personnel and bolster security at nuclear plants, the heads of
the former September 11 Commission said on Sunday.

Former commission chairman Thomas Kean said preparing for another attack
has not been a high enough priority for President George W. Bush and
Congress.

"A lot of the things we need to do really to prevent another 9/11 just
simply aren't being done by the president or by the Congress," Kean, the
former Republican governor of New Jersey, said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

This is not new news. This is something we should of been talking about since
Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast and exposed America to its weaknesses. The main
weakness is our lack of preparation.

The defense the President's people have been arguing is that it was the worst
natural disaster in the country's history. I won't argue that, but 9/11 was the
worst attack on this nation also. Katrina should have been treated no different
than a nuclear or chemical attack in a large city. Instead the devastation was
ignored by George Bush. Why is that? Perhaps he thought it would just go away
and not expose our weaknesses.

Coingate Yields It's First Prosecutions

Ohio gov. charged with criminal
misdemeanors

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) - Prosecutors in Ohio charged Gov. Bob Taft on
Wednesday with four criminal misdemeanor counts alleging violations of state
ethics laws for not reporting golf games and other outings paid for by others.

The charges marked the first time an Ohio governor has been charged with a
crime while in office. A Taft spokesman said the governor would not resign and
would have a statement on Thursday.

The charges against the Republican governor also marked another step in a
still-unfolding scandal dubbed "Coingate" that involves $13 million in missing
state funds and a top Ohio Republican fund-raiser.

Stephen McIntosh, chief prosecutor for the Columbus city attorney, said
most of the outings involved golf but also included meals and tickets to see
the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey team.

The undeclared amounts totaled a little less than $6,000, McIntosh said.
The governor subsequently notified state ethics commission officials about the
outings that had been omitted in previous filings of yearly disclosure forms.
McIntosh said the governor is required to report gifts or benefits of $75 or
more.

Prosecutors were asking that Taft appear in court on Thursday morning,
though if he chooses to enter a not guilty plea only his lawyer would have to
be present, he said.

If found guilty, he faces fines of $1,000 and six months in jail on each
count, though jail time was considered unlikely.
