Repeal Of Ohio's SB5 To Be Decided By Voters

Posted 7/21/11 at 2:53pm by jamie

SB5, Ohio's bill stripping public employee union's of collective bargaining rights, will have it's fate decided this November by Ohio voters:

Ohio voters will have the chance this November to decide whether the state's contentious new collective bargaining law should be repealed.

The state's elections chief said Thursday that opponents had gathered enough valid signatures to put the question before voters. The measure is now suspended from taking effect until voters have their say.

The law signed by Ohio Gov. John Kasich in late March bans public employee strikes and restricts collective bargaining rights for more than 350,000 teachers, police officers and other public workers. While unions can continue to negotiate wages, they cannot bargain on health care, sick time or pension benefits.

The group We Are Ohio delivered more than 1.3 million signatures to Secretary of State Jon Husted, though the opponents needed roughly 231,000 valid signatures to get the question on the ballot.

This is excellent news for Ohio workers and the state overall. It's a chance to shove it back in the face of our pompous Governor and restore basic rights to our public employees.

Republicans Find The Silver Bullet To Fight Terrorism

Posted 2/5/10 at 3:22pm by jamie

Wow South Carolina is really ahead of the curve on fighting terrorism. I expect Osama is already packing up shop:

Terrorists who want to overthrow the United States government must now register with South Carolina's Secretary of State and declare their intentions -- or face a $25,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison.

The state's "Subversive Activities Registration Act," passed last year and now officially on the books, states that "every member of a subversive organization, or an organization subject to foreign control, every foreign agent and every person who advocates, teaches, advises or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States ... shall register with the Secretary of State."

There's even a $5 filing fee.

That’s amazing and it comes from one of the reddest states in the union. We should do this with everything. Require drug dealers, murderers, rapists and whoever else to pre-register. That would get rid of any need for defense or law enforcement. Of course the bad side is all that added bureaucracy in our government.

Wait?

Republicans are adding bureaucracy?

Yup – again the hypocrisy stinks, but that stench is overshadowed by the over all reeking of stupidity from this idiotic law. And to think the Republicans want America to take them seriously on combating terrorism. Hell you got a better chance of Mark Sanford keeping it in his pants.

Orly Taitz is getting her attention fix again:

Taitz also said on her blog this week that she is considering running for state office in California, either for attorney general or secretary of state, so she could sue Obama for his records.

"We don't need 50 secretaries of state or 50 Attorney Generals suing Obama. If only one sues and gets discovery, we are done," she wrote.

Wow! Now this would be must-see politics. Can we make her the new GOP chair? Pretty please?

Keith Bardwell The Racist Louisiana Justice Resigns

Posted 11/3/09 at 6:13pm by jamie

It’s always a happy day when you see some racist sack of crap relinquish his power:

A Louisiana justice of the peace who refused to marry a couple because the bride was white and groom was black resigned Tuesday.

Keith Bardwell, who is white, quit the post with a one-sentence statement to Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne and no explanation of his decision: "I do hereby resign the office of Justice of the Peace for the Eighth Ward of Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, effective November 3, 2009.

Don’t worry Mr. Bardwell, I’m sure FOX News is working on a job offer for you.

Could Failed Health Care Lead To A Democratic Primary In 2012?

Posted 9/4/09 at 8:51am by jamie

Last night Keith Olbermann and Eugene Robinson discussed that very possibility.

I believe this pivots on exactly how much President Obama caves to the right. If he totally caves, then the possibility of this is very high. If that happens it wouldn’t shock me to see Hillary resign as Secretary of State and run against him. True that could easily spell disaster for the Democrats in 2012.

State Department Worked To Prevent Honduras Coup

Posted 6/29/09 at 8:12am by jamie

I’m still catching up on all the news of Honduras, but I found this article to not be that newsworthy:

The Obama administration worked in recent days to prevent President Manuel Zelaya's ouster, said a senior U.S. official. The State Department, in particular, communicated to Honduran officials on the ground that President Barack Obama wouldn't support any nondemocratic transfer of power in the Central American country.

"We had some indication that a move against Mr. Zelaya was afoot," said a U.S. official briefed on the diplomacy. "We made it clear it was something we didn't support."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton joined Obama Sunday in criticizing the Honduran coup and calling for the restoration of the democratic process.

Sounds logical. Any sort of coup leads to political instability in a nation, and we don’t need anymore instability in the world right now. Like I said, not really news. Well not really until you start reading how the right is taking it:

Figures... Barack Obama meddled and worked to prevent the ouster of this leftist tinpot dictator.
...When a Leftist dictator's career is on the line, Obama finds reason to meddle.
When Iranian democracy protesters are slaughtered on the street, Obama refuses to insert himself into the "debate."

Rejected

Posted 1/6/09 at 2:40pm by jamie

Day one of the new Congress and Roland Burris got rejected. Actually it wasn’t by anyone in the Senate, but rather by Illinois’ Secretary of State, who refused to sign his credentials. This is going to be very interesting to watch. As much of a creep as I think Blago is, it was a shrewd move on his part. He is still the governor and charged with appointing a replacement. That’s something a lot of Democrats seem to be forgetting.

Stretching It

Posted 12/9/08 at 5:42pm by jamie

The Huffington Post’s Jason Linkin does his best to become a Matt Drudge. Referring to this exchange from Sunday’s MTP when Obama was asked about New York's open Senate Seat:

MR. BROKAW: You still have some appointments to make coming up, and there's also a good deal of consideration here in Illinois about who will replace you in the Senate. But in New York this weekend the big buzz is Caroline Kennedy in the United States Senate, perhaps as the appointment to fill the seat that Hillary Clinton is expected to vacate if she gets confirmed as secretary of state.

PRES.-ELECT OBAMA: And?

MR. BROKAW: Is that a good idea?

PRES.-ELECT OBAMA: Well, let me tell you this. Caroline Kennedy has become one of my dearest friends and is just a, a wonderful American, a wonderful person. But the last thing I want to do is get involved in New York politics. I've got enough trouble in terms of Illinois politics.

Linkins alludes to this:

Now, if, say, the Obama camp was aware of the Fitzmas probe on Blago at the time of the interview, that forgotten moment takes on an added bit of frisson, doesn't it?

Talk about a long shot at trying to make a story. Go there and read the comments – Linkin’s is getting his ass handed to him.

Gates To Remain As SecDef

Posted 11/25/08 at 5:57pm by jamie

Robert Gates at Senate Armed Servic Com 2 6 08 No big surprise here:

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has agreed to stay on under President-elect Barack Obama, according to officials in both parties. Obama plans to announce a national-security team early next week that includes Gates at the Pentagon and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) as secretary of state, officials said.

Retired Marine Gen. James Jones, former Marine commandant and commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Europe, will be named national security adviser, the officials said.

I think it’s a good move. Keeping someone around who might know where the bodies are buried can be beneficial.

Franken Gaining On Coleman

Posted 11/20/08 at 9:28am by jamie

Al Franken I really want to see a Senator Franken. Think of how much fun CSpan will be then:

According to data just released by the Minnesota Secretary of State, Al Franken has gained a net of 43 votes on the first day of that state's recount process. Norm Coleman had a lead of 215 voters over Franken in Minnesota's certified, pre-recount tally; that margin is now 172 votes.

Minnesota reports that it has thus far re-counted 15.49 percent of its ballots. If the first day's results are indicative of the pace that the candidates will maintain throughout the recount process, Franken would gain a net of 278 votes over Colmean, giving him a narrow victory. For any number of reasons, however, the results reported thus far may not be indicative of future trends.

Nate goes on to say that there are still the more Democratic strongholds to be counted and those could come out in our favor. Talk about a nail biter.

Tweety Puts His Foot In His Mouth Again

Posted 11/18/08 at 1:08pm by jamie

Untitled-1 Chris Matthews just can’t help himself when it comes to some good old Hillary bashing:

An avowed Clinton lover who was sitting next to Matthews reports: "He was in business class wearing a red baseball hat that said Penn on the back, and the fat [bleep] fell asleep on the train and snored with his mouth open."

During the ride to DC, Matthews awoke from his nap. A fellow passenger asked him, "What's the news tomorrow?" - to which Matthews loudly started talking about President-elect Barack Obama possibly picking Hillary as his secretary of state.

"I don't understand it," Matthews bellowed. "Why would he pick her? I thought we were done with the Clintons. She'll just use it to build her power base. It's Machiavellian. And then we'll have Bill Clinton, too. I thought Obama didn't want drama. He's already got [chief of staff Rahm] Emanuel and [transition team leader John] Podesta. He'll have even more drama with her.</p>

"She's just a soap opera. If he doesn't pick her, everyone will say she's been dissed again, we'll have to live through that again."

At the beginning of this year, old Chris ended up having to do an on air apology to Hillary for bashing her. Maybe it’s time for an intervention.

Another Choice For Secretary of State

Posted 11/15/08 at 10:14am by jamie

Here is another fine choice for Secretary of State Obama is considering:

Eyewitness News 4 has learned Gov. Bill Richardson met with the Barack Obama transitional team Friday in Chicago about a possible position as Secretary of State.

Richardson, the former secretary of energy in the Clinton administration, is considered a top contender for secretary of state.

Democrat insiders say Richardson, along with Sen. Hillary Clinton, both met with the Obama team Friday for Obama's top cabinet post.

I have always really liked Bill Richardson. I believe he is firm enough, yet likeable enough to do a great job as our top diplomat. Add to that the fact he was our ambassador to the UN under Clinton, he also posses the experience of Hillary.

Confirmed: Hillary Met With Obama In Chicago

Posted 11/14/08 at 12:02pm by jamie

The Huffington Post has now confirmed that Hillary Clinton did meet with Obama in Chicago yesterday. Speculation is that she is being considered for Secretary of State. There have been mixed reactions about this, but I think it would be a very good move. As First Lady, Hillary was a face of diplomacy, as are all first ladies. The Clinton name also wields some heavy power around the globe, so it is a very fitting position for her.
