Now This Is A Hell Of An Idea

Posted 3/11/10 at 8:25am by jamie

This whole “seniority” thing in the Senate has always been a bunch of garbage and helped contribute to the “good ole’ boys” club mentality that surrounds the chamber. Now it looks like it could be coming to an end:

During a question-and-answer session with progressive media, video blogger Mike Stark asked lawmakers why the Democratic caucus hasn't yanked Sen. Blanche Lincoln's chairmanship of the Agriculture Committee, considering her opposition to Democratic legislative efforts. In Arkansas, her gavel is a top selling point as she battles a progressive primary challenge.

"We're going to elect committee chairs next year," said Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio). "The current chairs that are sitting there now understand that we'll be electing chairs next year," he added, saying the idea had been cleared with Senate leadership.

Under current rules, members of the caucus can weigh in by objecting to an overall Senate organizing resolution, but don't have an up-or-down vote on each chair.

That’s exactly how it should be. Take Lieberman as an example. The only reason he is still a Democrat is so that he can keep his seniority and have his Homeland Security chairmanship. It doesn’t matter if Jack Bauer himself became a senator, Lieberman would still be chair because of his seniority.

It’s practices like this that have made the Senate a laughing stock of the free world. I’m glad to see talk of ending it. If these people really think they should chair committees, then let them fight for it. It’s time for our senators to prove their worth.

Statement From Anthony Weiner On Joe Lieberman

Posted 12/16/09 at 12:03am by jamie

Earlier today Joe Lieberman said he changed his stance on the Medicare buy-in because liberals like Anthony Weiner liked it. Now Anthony Weiner has responded:

This afternoon The New York Times and other news outlets reported that Senator Lieberman was backing away from his own health care proposal, in part because I liked it.

If this wasn't so sad, it would be amazing. Here you have the most important legislation for millions of Americans' health and welfare, and apparently Senator Lieberman backs away from his own proposal. Why? Because I and a professor at Yale like it.

All I can say charitably is I hope Senator Lieberman looks into his heart and does the right thing. This is not the time for anyone to act for politics, but to do the right thing. Let's be clear, this is an idea Senator Lieberman has proposed, repeatedly. That others embrace it should not be the criteria for leaders to make decisions. It would be tragic if this is what it appears, a decision based on hurting proponents of reform not helping the millions who need affordable health care coverage.

Some may say reformers should never have praised this measure. But that suggests we all agree to live in an Alice in Wonderland world of saying the opposite of what we mean. Now is the time to talk and act on the merits of an issue. Now is the time for leaders to make the right choices, not political calculations.

Lieberman Ready To Take On Iran

Posted 6/10/07 at 9:44pm by jamie

Unbelievable. Think Progress has the video up.

“I think we have to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq,” Lieberman said. Host Bob Schieffer followed-up: “Let’s just stop right there. Because I think you probably made some news here, Senator Lieberman. You’re saying that if the Iranians don’t let up, that the United States should take military action?” “I am,” Lieberman responded.

Lieberman is further right than a lot of Republicans. This guy doesn't worry about American interests - he worries about the interests of Israel.

Dear Mr. Lieberman

I always suspected you may have suffered from some sort of diminished mental capacity, but is there some other handicap you are suffering from that your are not sharing with us?

I mean, I see that your car is parked in a handicap spot this morning and am just wondering what your handicap is. I would certainly expect someone who tries to align themselves with Democrats to hold a higher ethics standard than this. This is something more that Republicans would do. So can we hear what it is that ails you Senator Lieberman?

Lieberman/Lamont Debate

Posted 7/7/06 at 1:34am by jamie

I been catching up on clips and what nots from it. It my opinion Lamont showed that he is truly concerned about his constituents and the Democratic Party while Joe is worried about only Joe. Here are some great run downs from around the blogosphere.

Matt Stoller is debunking the lies Lieberman told tonight during the debate.

Jane has a clip up of Joe doing a typical Republican style attack of Lamont as well as a great thread going on about the debate

PolticsTV has the video up of the debate

And this is a doozy from Ned Lamont's Blog:

Senator Lieberman stormed out of the debate early, barely answering questions from the local media. He was hearing a lot about his anger during the debate and called it a day. Ned stuck around for questions for about 20 minutes. The result... Sean Smith, Senator Lieberman's campaign manager, fielding questions from a single repoter and Ned swamped by the press.

That will win some hearts and minds Joe - the hearts and minds of people like Malkin (oh wait - he already won that).

Lieberman/Lamont Gaining National Attention

Posted 6/5/06 at 9:02pm by jamie

Reuters has a nice article up about the challenge Joe Lieberman is facing this year:

After years of ardent support for the Iraq war, Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman could become that conflict's first big political casualty in a Democratic primary race fueled by rising anti-war anger.

Lieberman, the party's vice presidential nominee in 2000, faces a growing challenge from a political neophyte who has rallied Democrats angered by the senator's enthusiastic backing of the war and willingness to support Republican President George W. Bush on other issues.

Challenger Ned Lamont's underdog bid to unseat Lieberman in Democratic-leaning Connecticut could offer an early gauge of the intensity of anti-war sentiment ahead of November's midterm elections, along with a measure of the influence of the Internet activists and bloggers who have flocked to his cause.

"Senator Lieberman has cheered on the president every step of the way when it comes to the invasion of Iraq, and he is too quick to compromise on core Democratic principles," Lamont, a businessman and former Greenwich town selectman, told Reuters....read on
