Cleaning Up The Airwaves?

Posted 1/20/11 at 10:20am by jamie

This is a really good start:

Yesterday, hate radio hosts Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity had their nationally syndicated radio shows dropped from WPHT in Philadelphia, which is the second radio station to drop both of the conservative commentators. The moves werescheduled back in November 2010, and Marc Rayfield, market manager for CBS Radio in Philadelphia and senior vice president, said that WPHT wants to become “more of a locally based station.”

Just weeks ago, Beck was dropped from WOR in New York, but the most recent cancellation in Philadelphia hurts Beck even more. Beck got his start in Philadelphia, and many of his radio staffers still live in Philly, including Beck’s side-kick Stu. Immediately after being dropped yesterday, Beck dropped all affection for the city where he got his start, saying, “Philly sucks”:

Now if we can get more of the country to drop hate radio, we might be on the road to recovery from our age of bitter, partisan politics.

David Kellerman Found Dead

Wow:

The chief financial officer (CFO) of Freddie Mac, the giant US mortgage lender and guarantor, has died in an apparent suicide.

David Kellermann, who was acting chief financial officer and a senior vice president of Freddie Mac, was found by his wife in their Virginia home, according to local media reports.

This story will be interesting to watch over the next few days.

Colmes Out

colmes Hannity has lost his sidekick:

FOX News Channel's (FNC) Alan Colmes will relinquish his role as co-host of Hannity & Colmes at the end of the year.

In announcing his decision, Colmes said, "I approached Bill Shine (FNC's Senior Vice President of Programming) earlier this year about wanting to move on after 12 years to develop new and challenging ways to contribute to the growth of the network. Although it's bittersweet to leave one of the longest marriages on cable news, I'm proud that both Sean (Hannity) and I remained unharmed after sitting side by side, night after night for so many years."

Colmes will continue to have a presence on FNC as he will serve as a liberal commentator on a variety of FOX News programming, including Foxnews.com's The Strategy Room and continue hosting his radio program, The Alan Colmes Show on FOX Talk, a division of FOX News Radio. He will also begin developing a weekend program.

I wonder if Colmes will be replaced next to Hannity, or if he will go solo. It’s a shame that Robert Gibbs got his new gig as press secretary. I would love to see him co-hosting with Hannity.

Shittygroup

polished-turd Citigoup’s stock closed at $4.71 today, down 26.39%. That pushes them below the $5 threshold, which is generally a big trigger for massive selling:

Most institutional investors and pension funds are barred from owning stocks below $5. So if Citigroup's stock remains below that level, it could trigger a wave of selling that would send the share price even lower.

"That's the danger of crossing that $5 threshold," says Owen Malcolm, senior vice president of Sanders Financial Management in Atlanta. "They're (Citigroup) already in trouble. It could get worse."

I got a feeling their isn’t going to be much to be thankful for next week on Wall Street.

Joe The Plumber?

Posted 10/16/08 at 12:56pm by jamie

Joe Wurzelbacher, aka Joe the Plumber, has some interesting ties that are really close to McCain:

Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years.

So Joe the Plumber is tied to the figure at the center of the Keating Five scandal. Maybe this should bring the entire Keating scandal to center stage now.

Will McCain Denounce His Own Party?

So we have this bailout that is needed for Wall Street to survive. The only problem is that Wall Street wants the plan carved their way or no way. From the WSJ:

House Republican staffers met with roughly 15 lobbyists Friday afternoon, whose message to lawmakers was clear: Don't load the legislation up with provisions not directly related to the crisis, or regulatory measures the industry has long opposed.

"We're opposed to adding provisions that will affect [or] undermine the deal substantively," said Scott Talbott, senior vice president of government affairs at the Financial Services Roundtable, whose members include the nation's largest banks, securities firms and insurers.

A deal killer for the group: a proposal that would grant bankruptcy judges new powers to lower the principal, interest rate or both on a mortgage as part of a bankruptcy proceeding.

I think the most ironic part is that the lobbyists know the only hope they have of getting this wish is to lobby the minority party. Why is that? Because the minority party is the party that will listen to them. So they expect us to give them nearly a trillion dollars with no strings attached. Time for the Democrats to give them a big "fuck off" and make it known they are there to protect the people - not the financial big wigs.

Don't Let The Bed Bugs Bite!

Posted 3/18/08 at 4:11pm by jamie

Unless you are at FOX News:

While grappling with MSNBC and CNN for viewers, Fox News has also been battling a smaller, more insidious enemy closer to home: bed bugs in its Midtown Manhattan newsroom. In an interview on Monday, Warren Vandeveer, senior vice president for operations and engineering at Fox News, said the cable channel had realized it had a problem a few weeks ago, when an employee "caught a bug and showed it to us." An exterminator determined that the incursion was limited to a "very small area in the newsroom." But the source of the bugs was not determined until the exterminator inspected the homes of about 20 employees. Mr. Vandeveer said the exterminator later described one employee's home as having "the worst infestation he had seen in 25 years in the business." After making large bags available for employees to stash their belongings, and replacing a number of fabric-covered desk chairs, Mr. Vandeveer said that the treatments had ended about a week ago, and that the problem had been contained. "It's totally eradicated," he said.

Sometimes the jokes just write themselves.

No FOX In Mexico!

Posted 6/29/06 at 9:47pm by jamie

This is a very interesting decision:

Fox News Channel is going off the air in Mexico in advance of Sunday's presidential election to steer clear of that country's restrictions on campaign ads and public surveys, cable channel executives said Wednesday.

Fox News decided to temporarily halt transmission into Mexico because of concerns that the channel's coverage would violate a ban on disseminating opinion polls or campaign commercials in the days before the election, and jeopardize the standing of the cable and satellite companies that distribute its signal.

"I just don't think we had much choice," said Janet Alshouse, senior vice president of international distribution for Fox News. "We can't restrict our coverage."

Sounds like Mexico is more out to protect their democracy than we are. As soon as I read this, I thought back to the 2000 election. That night when all the networks were predicting Gore the winner then all of the sudden FOX is breaking ranks and predicting Bush the winner. This of course forced the other channels to switch their prediction and we know what happened after that.

The New Boss - Worse Than The Old Boss

From TPM Muckraker

Hayden, President Bush's pick to replace Porter Goss as head of the CIA, contracted with MZM Inc. for the services of Lt. Gen. James C. King, then a senior vice president of the company, the sources say. MZM was owned and operated by Mitchell Wade, who has admitted to bribing former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham with $1.4 million in money and gifts. Wade has also reportedly told investigators he helped arrange for prostitutes to entertain the disgraced lawmaker, and he continues to cooperate with a federal inquiry into the matter.

I guess hookers isn't enough corruption for the top man at our main intelligence agency. Now we need someone involved in bribery.

Another Bush Nominee Tied To Abramoff

Posted 10/7/05 at 3:16pm by jamie

On October 18, the Senate judiciary committee will start
hearings into the ties between Timothy Flanigan and Jack Abramoff. Flanigan was
nominated by President Bush in May to become Deputy Attorney General at the
Justice Department.

Abramoff was a lobbyist for Tyco, where Flanigan became a
senior vice president in 2002. Flanigan joined Tyco following the resignation of
two executives, who were being investigated for misrepresenting the company’s
financial condition and improperly taking bonuses.

Tyco paid $2 million, which most went to firms controlled
by Abramoff, in order to preserve its tax advantage they got from shifting their
home to Bermuda.

Flanigan also worked under Alberto Gonzales, when he was
chief White House council. While at the White House, Flanigan worked on some of
the most controversial cases, including the finding that the Geneva Convention
does not apply to suspected terrorists. He also worked on the controversial memo
narrowing the definition of torture

In September, Senate Democrats questioned Flanigan about
his involvement with Tyco and Jack Abramoff; however Flanigan would not answer
the questions. Arlen Specter, the chair of the judiciary committee, said that
the Democrats questions merited being answered.

This is all coming in the dawn of David Safavian receiving
five indictments for obstruction of justice in the Abramoff investigation.
Safavian was the chief procurement officer for the White House.
