ABC’s Self Inflicted Wounds

Posted 11/1/10 at 12:00pm by jamie

8415I haven’t posted yet on the decision by ABC News to use Andrew Breitbart as some sort of analysis for their election night coverage. I didn’t think I really need to say how bad of a decision I thought this was, but now it’s getting beyond what I thought it would.

When ABC decided to clarify that Breitbart would only appear on their webcasts that was expected to temper down the backlash somewhat. Well it didn’t work and now the new firestorm ABC is facing comes from none other than Breitbart himself. From Greg Sargent:

You have to wonder if ABC News is regretting its decision to get within a thousand miles of Andrew Breitbart. The guy is now accusing the network of lying about whether they had tapped him to do on-air election night analysis.

ABC News, in a statement sent my way, adamantly denied Breitbart's latest attack. But it appears he will still have some kind of role with ABC's coverage.

This is worth noting, because it shows how insane it is for any serious news organization to play footsie with this guy. He's a relentless self-promoter who's clearly seizing on this standoff to turn himself into some kind of First Amendment martyr, even if it means dumping all over the organization that originally extended him the invite to participate.

Eric Schmidt Confronts Murdoch On Murdoch’s Turf

Eric Schmidt, the head cheese of Google, has written a lengthy article appearing in the Murdoch owned Wall Street Journal. In the piece Schmidt not only clarifies the distortions Murdoch has been laying out these past few weeks, but also what Google is doing to help the news industry.

First off here is Schmidt talking about Murdoch’s claims:

Google is a great source of promotion. We send online news publishers a billion clicks a month from Google News and more than three billion extra visits from our other services, such as Web Search and iGoogle. That is 100,000 opportunities a minute to win loyal readers and generate revenue—for free. In terms of copyright, another bone of contention, we only show a headline and a couple of lines from each story. If readers want to read on they have to click through to the newspaper's Web site. (The exception are stories we host through a licensing agreement with news services.) And if they wish, publishers can remove their content from our search index, or from Google News.

The claim that we're making big profits on the back of newspapers also misrepresents the reality. In search, we make our money primarily from advertisements for products. Someone types in digital camera and gets ads for digital cameras. A typical news search—for Afghanistan, say—may generate few if any ads. The revenue generated from the ads shown alongside news search queries is a tiny fraction of our search revenue.

That is exactly what I have been saying all along. Google isn’t “stealing content”, they are simply indexing very small tidbits of it so people can easily find it, and they do find it at a rate of one billion per month. I don’t think that’s something any serious news publisher would want to turn away.

Will The MSM Still Consider Drudge A Serious News Portal?

Posted 5/31/09 at 4:57pm by jamie

All the news, both online and off, are a buzz about the shooting death of George Tiller, a Kansas abortion doctor. Well that is all except Matt Drudge:

mdgt

To Matt Drudge the big story is still about Susan Boyle losing in some reality show last night. How much longer will the media continue to hype the Drudge Report as some sort of major news portal? I guarantee if this was some pro-choicer killing a pro-lifer he would have the flashing beacon up and everything else.

Wow They Are Desperate

The wingnuts have been in an uproar over a "news article" posted by some group called African Press International, in which Michelle Obama allegedly calls the organization and goes on a rampage. Some of the more notable journalists on the right have reported this is entirely false, yet the wingnut hysteria continues. Here's what they are saying at the loony bin known as Newsbusters:

Double WOW! As I stated, African Press International has been in existence for over two years and has filed over a thousand stories. So will the MSM investigate this? Meanwhile this story is gaining enormous steam in the Blogosphere.

UPDATE: Because of the high level of interest in this story, API has just posted a phone number where they can be contacted for verification. Calls must be made between Oct. 16 and 18. Here is the number posted on their site: 004793299739. To call from the USA, the number is: 011-4793299739.

Thousands of news stories? Really? Well I decide to check them out in Google news search and all I found was four mentions of this big organizations. All today, nothing reported by them, just people reporting on this scam.
