stimulus

Is This Who We Want As Our Next President?

Posted 8/14/11 at 2:28pm by jamie

It seems a lot of the right is gaga over Rick Perry and his entering the 2012 race. The media is working hard to talk him up and he will most likely become the front runner at a pretty rapid pace.

So what do we know about Rick Perry? Unless you live in Texas or follow politics really closely then the answer is not much. So let's start off with some things Perry has done, especially this from Bob Cesca:

Texas, which crafts a budget every two years, was facing a $6.6 billion shortfall for its 2010-2011 fiscal years. It plugged nearly all of that deficit with $6.4 billion in Recovery Act money, allowing it to leave its $9.1 billion rainy day fund untouched.

“Stimulus was very helpful in getting them through the last few years,” said Brian Sigritz, director of state fiscal studies for the National Association of State Budget Officers, said of Texas.

Even as Perry requested the Recovery Act money, he railed against it. On the very same day he asked for the funds, he set up a petition titled “No Government Bailouts.”

“Join our fight and add your voice to a growing list of several thousand Americans who are fed up with this irresponsible spending that threatens our future,” Perry wrote on his blog on Feb. 18, 2009.

Yup - as Rick Perry was out there blasting the stimulus as a "waste of money" and even using it as an excuse to remove Texas from the union, he was sitting out there, with a big grin you would expect to find on a snake-oil salesman, hand opening, going "gimme, gimme!". This guy is another one of those big hypocrites that is plaguing the Republican field.

Rick Perry – Hypocrite Of The Day

Posted 4/18/11 at 9:40am by jamie

How many times have we heard Rick Perry trash the federal government and taxes? He’s even hinted at secession from the union in protest to this. Now ole’ slick Rick just loves him some federal money:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry sought additional federal help in battling wildfires across his drought-parched state as a woodland blaze gutted at least six homes on Sunday and threatened hundreds more in Austin, the state capital.

And for those that believe this is an emergency incident or something like that, think again. Remember when Rick Perry was out complaining about stimulus money and saying he would refuse it? Yeah – at that time he was saying all that, behind the scenes he was requesting the money, mainly to rebuild the Governor’s mansion.

But let’s not spend all our time on Rick Perry. He’s just like the rest of his party. They complain about federal dollars until they want a piece of the old pie.

But I Thought There Were No Stimulus Projects In Ohio?

Posted 3/24/11 at 8:38am by jamie

For two years we have heard Republicans complain that the stimulus didn’t spark any projects in Ohio. Even John Boehner repeated this claim over and over again. So then why this legislation?

A measure banning signs that tout federal stimulus spending along Ohio's roadways cleared the Republican-led Ohio Senate and is expected to pass the House, also controlled by the GOP.

State Sen. Tim Grendell, a northeast Ohio Republican who championed it as an amendment to the state transportation budget, said the proposal made common sense. The bill with Grendell's change cleared the Senate unanimously on Wednesday.

Grendell said taxpayer dollars were being spent to advertise the Obama administration. Democrats who at the time controlled the House blocked the proposal from becoming law last session.

If we are worried about tax dollars being spent for Presidents administrations, then does that mean the Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway signs will not be replaced? How about the Ronald Reagan Lodge in our local park district, which is tax payer funded?  What about the tax payer dollars spent in Hamilton, Ohio to build a status of George Bush after he signed NCLB here?

For people that campaigned on fixing the budget and creating jobs, they sure have spent a ton of time on some of the most petty things.

The Disgusting Lows Wingnuts Will Go To For A Smear

Posted 1/14/11 at 10:00am by jamie

This has to be one of the worst smears in the history of smears:

In one of the most cynical displays in recent memory, following the lead of Gateway Pundit Jim Hoft, several  conservative websites - including Fox Nation and MRC arm CNS News - suggested that President Obama lied last night when he said that Rep. Giffords had opened her eyes for the first time shortly after his Wednesday night visit to the hospital.

In a recently-completed press conference, Giffords' doctor Peter Rhee explained that what Obama said last night about Giffords opening her eyes was "true."

In response to a question from a reporter about previous statements that Giffords could open her eyes, Rhee and Dr. B Michael Lemole, Section Chief of Neurosurgery at University Medical Center in Tuscon, explained the important distinction. Namely, Giffords previously opened her eyes in response to "stimulus," and yesterday she opened them spontaneously, which represented a "major milestone" in her recovery.

This week we have heard repeatedly from the right that the left has been “politicizing” the tragedy in Tucson. While some on the left have, the right has also engaged in this. Right here is a perfect example of that and also one of the most vile. For the doctors to have to address this when they should be caring for patients shows just how hot this issue became – an issue based on lies and hatred towards our President.

The Ole' Texas & Two Step

Posted 9/24/10 at 8:12am by jamie

100809_rick_perry_ap_522_regular For someone who is always out campaigning against federal spending, Rick Perry sure seems hell bent on seeing some federal money:

Texas officials filed a lawsuit Thursday against the U.S. Department of Education, seeking to overturn the federal agency's rejection of the state's application for more than $830 million in aid that has been tied up in political wrangling.

A state-specific provision inserted into a federal law by a Democratic Texas congressman requires that Republican Gov. Rick Perry promise Texas will maintain certain education spending levels through 2013 in order to get the funds. Perry has called the requirement unconstitutional because the Texas Constitution prohibits him from committing future state spending.

Texas applied for the money anyway, but was rejected because its application included a caveat saying the state would not violate its own constitution. Federal officials urged the state to reapply without the caveat.

Of course it’s all the Democrats fault, just like when the Democrats forced Perry to spend stimulus money on rebuilding the Governor’s mansion.

From Top To Bottom - A Look Back Over The Past Two Years

Posted 9/2/10 at 11:16am by jamie

Like many others, I have spent the last few days really contemplating what will happen in the elections this November. As much as I want to be optimistic, I just can’t bring myself to it. Democrats are looking at a very dark mid-term and, as Peter Daou puts it, these are “dark days for the left”.

But what happened? What caused the rapid fall from glory for President Obama over the past two years? When he was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama enjoyed one of the highest approval ratings in history. Now he is treading water to keep from hitting bottom. I believe there are three main factors that play into this; healthcare, economy and war. I want to take a minute and look at what happened with each of these issues and how it turned the base sour on the President.

Anti-Stimulus Mark Sanford Takes Stimulus Money

Posted 8/11/10 at 12:11pm by jamie

Well imagine that. S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford was out for months blasting the stimulus. All the media covered it and his declarations of not taking any stimulus money almost nonstop. Well that has changed:

Two months ago, however, with the bright lights of political promise dimmed by a scandal involving an extramarital affair, Mr. Sanford quietly signed a bill passed by the Legislature that expanded eligibility for unemployment benefits. The move paved the way for the state to claim $97.5 million in stimulus money to bolster its financially ailing unemployment insurance trust fund.

The federal Department of Labor announced Tuesday that South Carolina had officially cleared its approval process and that the stimulus money was being released immediately.

And the other thing that has changed? The media is silent on Sanford’s big flip-flop.

A Stronger Than Expected Recovery?

Posted 4/27/10 at 8:18am by jamie

That’s what leading economists are saying (via Cesca):

The recovery is shaping up to be stronger than expected and there is little risk the economy will slip back into a recession, according to USA TODAY's quarterly survey of 46 leading economists.

Yet most still say the rebound will fall short of the sharp, V-shaped upturns that often follow severe slumps, and the 9.7% jobless rate will fall slowly.

As the Fed meets to assess the economy this week, seven in 10 economists say they're more optimistic than they were three months ago.

"I think we've gotten to a point where it's a self-sustaining recovery," says Standard & Poor's chief economist David Wyss.

Even Joe Scarborough is going on about the economy improving this morning. This kind of news will really help Democrats out this fall, especially if you tie it to the Republicans filibustering financial reform. Then you can also add the countless sound bites of Republicans saying “get rid of the stimulus” and you got a big winning campaign for the Democrats. Now we only need the powers to be to seize on all this news and inform the American people of what is happening.

Retail Sales Surge In March

Posted 4/14/10 at 8:55am by jamie

From a Washington Post breaking email alert:

Sales at U.S. retailers rose more strongly than expected in March as consumer stepped up purchases of vehicles and wide range of goods, government data showed on Wednesday, suggesting a broadening of the manufacturing-led economic recovery.

The Commerce Department said total retail sales jumped 1.6 percent, the largest increase since November, from an upwardly revised 0.5 percent rise in February. Sales in February were previously reported to have gained 0.3 percent.

I wonder how much of this is because of people getting back larger tax refunds this year? It would play into the fact that more middle class Americans will be more willing to spend their money than the top 2%. It also would be another indicator that the stimulus is working.

John Boehner Constantly Claims Federal Money Doesn’t Work… BUT

Posted 2/25/10 at 8:24pm by jamie

It amazes me every time I hear Boehner decry federal money as being a failure. He tried to do it on the stimulus by saying there were no stimulus projects happening in Ohio, despite one going on a couple of miles from his own house. Now we have this issue:

Nearly a year and a half after federal lawmakers gave Butler County $4.2 million to deal with the housing crisis, county leaders are still trying to figure out what to do with it.

With only six months to go before the federal government takes unused money back, commissioners heard a list of options today, Feb. 25, from county Community Development Director Donna Everson.

This money is from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, a program created in 2008 to help combat high foreclosures. You know, 2008, a time when Bush was President.

Now for some facts:

  • Butler County is the home of John Boehner (and me)
  • Butler County is 100% Republican run.

Enough facts. Now see the problem? It’s not that the programs don’t work – it’s that Republicans don’t know what the hell to do with them. People have been losing their houses around here and there’s money sitting there to help, yet the corrupt Republicans that run this county just sit there doing nothing. These are all friends of Boehner and as our representative, he should be working to remedy this problem instead of playing politician all the time.

“Puny”

Posted 2/22/10 at 9:57am by jamie

Yes it is:

Unions and liberal groups have dismissed Sen. Harry Reid’s $15 billion jobs bill as "puny" while calling for larger stimulus measures.

More than two dozen organizations, including the AFL-CIO, National Association for the Advancement of Colored Peoples (NAACP) and National Council of La Raza, warned Democratic leaders in Congress to avoid tackling the troubled economy through incremental action.

They urged the Senate to pass the $15 billion jobs measure, which features a hiring tax cut for small businesses, but called for much more legislation to bring down an unemployment rate the White House projects to average 10 percent this year, more than 9 percent next year and over 8 percent in 2012.

"If this $15 billion was the only thing [that passed], that would be like having an amputated arm and sticking a Band-Aid on the end of it," said Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO, on a conference call Friday.

This bill is 1/71 the size of the TARP bill. It’s another example of how the people of this country just don’t matter to the lawmakers in Washington.

Something Else For Boehner To Ignore

Posted 1/28/10 at 1:18pm by jamie

John Boehner has constantly ignored stimulus projects happening here in Ohio, even when some of them are just a few miles from his own house. Now we have a big stimulus project coming to Ohio and I can bet that he will ignore this one also:

Ohio is getting about $400 million in federal stimulus money to restore passenger train service among its major cities.

Gov. Ted Strickland said Wednesday that U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood called him about the grant.

Ohio is planning a 79-mph, startup train service connecting Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati using existing tracks.

"The end point is under discussion right now, (but) the preferred end point is Cincinnati Union Terminal, and the state of Ohio and Amtrak will be working with the railroads to try to locate a terminus point because, at this time right now, there's going to be four trains a day each way, north and south," said Robert Wickens, founder of All Aboard Ohio.

This is excellent news for Ohio. I used to have to travel to Columbus on a constant basis and the 90 minute drive got really boring. Now I will be able to plop down $12 and head up there.

Wall Street Ready To Fight The Bank Tax

Posted 1/18/10 at 8:30am by jamie

Now that the American people have bailed out the banking system and our leaders are looking at ways to recoup the hundreds of billions of tax dollars we have spent, Wall Street is starting to look at ways to get out of paying us back.

According to an article in today’s New York Times, the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, which is the main lobbying arm of Wall Street, sent a e-mail to the heads of Wall Street’s legal departments last week saying that the tax may be unconstitutional since it would single out big banks. They have also hired Carter G. Phillips of Sidley Austin, an attorney who is no stranger to the Supreme Court, to review the proposal and determine if it could be considered unconstitutional.

When introducing this proposal last week, President Obama sent a warning shot to Wall Street, saying: “Instead of sending a phalanx of lobbyists to fight this proposal or employing an army of lawyers and accountants to help evade the fee, I suggest you might want to consider simply meeting your responsibilities.” Now it seems like Wall Street isn’t intent on doing that and instead wants to fight their responsibilities.

This becomes another gloomy chapter in corporate America’s milking of the people. They stood with their hands out when is was time to pass out money from the stimulus, but now that the government wants to take action to recoup costs and maybe prevent further failures, Wall Street is turning their noses at us. You can just hear Gordon Gecko muttering those famous words: “greed is good.”

Reid’s Duh Moment

Posted 1/14/10 at 9:15am by jamie

From TPM:

"As I look back it was a waste of time dealing with [Snowe]," Reid is quoted as saying about the White House in a forthcoming New York Times Magazine piece, "because she had no intention of ever working anything out."

I really wonder if Harry Reid actually knows how politics work. Arlen Specter would have been a great indicator. He sided with the Democrats on the stimulus and the Republicans decided to make an example out of him, basically forcing him out of the party. I guarantee this was in the mind of Snowe during the health care debate. She knew that if she backed the plan then the Republicans would start forcing her out of the party and might even try to get someone to primary her.

Sadly, in Washington, they are so drowned in politics that they don’t realize every decision is based upon politics. That politics isn’t the politics for the future, but rather the politics for personal gain and viability. To those of us watching at home, it is painfully obvious.

Boehner’s Error Filled FEC Filings

Posted 12/7/09 at 8:58am by jamie

It looks like John Boehner has a problem with accurately filing paperwork required under the FEC:

Since 1996, Boehner's congressional campaign committee has received 63 letters from the Federal Election Commission requesting "additional information" to correct seeming errors in reports the committee submitted.

That total surpasses similar FEC requests to Ohio's 17 other representatives. Rep. Steven LaTourette, R-Bainbridge Township, is second with 40.

Instead of addressing the issue, Boehner’s people decided to take the approach of a juvenile:

"There is zero comparison between an administration using fictitious data to sell a failing 'stimulus' and a campaign that files amendments to keep its FEC reports as accurate, updated, and transparent as possible," said Don Seymour, a spokesman for Boehner's campaign committee.

They couldn’t even own up to their mistakes? This really would have been a non-story if they didn’t jump on the “Timmy did it to mom” defense. Instead Boehner has now proved that he doesn’t have what it takes to lead by not being able to accept his own responsibility.
