The Good And The Bad

Posted 12/21/09 at 2:30pm by jamie

McJoan over at DailyKos has put together one hell of a post highlighting the good and bad of the Senate health care bill. Bottom line – if we can get rid of the mandates I think we have something we can all stomach and then work on. In all honesty the mandates should be removed and used as a bargaining tool with the insurance companies at a later date. Of course that would mean that Democrats actually knew how to negotiate and we know that isn’t true.

A serious question to the bill supporters out there. Do you think if public options are brought up again that the very strong lobbying arm of the health insurance industry won’t work as hard to defeat them then as they are now? Short of having some serious reform on lobbying happen in the interim, I don’t see any real hope at a public option later.

Republican Debate Tonight

Posted 1/24/08 at 11:09am by jamie

Just a reminder for those interested that there is a Republican debate on MSNBC tonight at 9:00pm est. I will be live blogging it if you can't stomach watching the fools. Also I will be testing out a new live blogging module I developed. How this works is if you are on the live blog post the data will refresh automatically every 30 seconds. It takes a lot of the work out of live blogging as I can easily add new items and it will be timestamped with my latest comments - almost like a one way chat system.

If this works out good, I will be looking for people to join in the live blogging sessions in the future. It will provide a new way to keep people up to date with opinions and analysis.

Delay's Final Day

Posted 6/9/06 at 12:58am by jamie

I just read Tom Delay's farewell speech and now feel all misty. Aww the poor hammer - that victim of "the criminalization of politics". How could they do that to him.

Ok back to reality. If you want to read his last attack on liberals as a member of Congress, you can do so here. Please do not read on a full stomach and if you do, I will not be held responsible for chunkys that may end up in your keyboard.

With all the news surrounding Zarqawi, many forgot it was his last day (we need a new national holiday - June 8th, Hammer Fall Day). Something interesting happened during his farewell speech on the House floor that hasn't got much attention until now:

Most House Republicans attended the speech, applauding and giving him several ovations. Several dozen Democrats were present at the start of the speech, but most walked out during his attack on liberal ideology.

Now I wonder how quick until the right turns this into an attack on them by the Democrats. Tom Delay will not be missed and Congress is a little better without his corrupt hand stirring the post.

Torture in Iraq?

Posted 7/7/05 at 10:45pm by jamie

Time
Online
reported today that torture camps are still common ground in Iraq,
and we are ignoring them. As matter of fact, the torture is being conducted by
the very same security forces our President so happily boasts about in his
rallying speeches for the war.

This news comes out on a day when London was met with its worst terrorist
attack ever. The group laying claim to the attacks was calling for the
withdrawal of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, and after reading a report like
this I can not blame though, though I do disagree with their actions.

The article talks about a 22 year old student who was arrested one night
during a raid by the police commandos, then taken to a facility and beat. He was
then transferred to another facility where he faced electric shock torture to
only be released twelve days later. Omar, the student was never charged with a
crime.

We hear the President laying reference to the torture and rape rooms Saddam
employed during his reign, and now are confronted with reports of the torture
rooms still operating. Excuses are already being made that the forces were
rushed into duty, and some had previously worked as Saddam’s security forces.

The pulling out of finger nails and burning with hot irons is some of the
other hideous techniques outlined in this article, and it only makes ones
stomach turn. We are supposed to be in Iraq to liberate these people. We are
there to spread democracy and freedom to the people, yet we are allowing this to
happen. It can not make one wonder when some other coalition will have to free
the Iraqi people from this collation.
