Could Boehner Be Done As Speaker?

Posted 12/29/11 at 10:38am by jamie

TPM has gathered a list of Republican members of Congress raising the possibility that John Boehner could see his short time as Speaker of the House come to an end in 2012:

“He’s (Boehner) got a big problem when he comes back,” one anonymous congressman claimed. “He may have a hard time keeping his Speakership after this.”

“We were hung out to dry by our leadership,” said another unnamed member.

My guess is that these unnamed members are most likely Tea Party members of Congress that really don't understand politics all that much. I don't really see Boehner losing his position as Speaker, mainly because this is a big election year and that would make the GOP look really bad.

On the other hand, if Boehner doesn't do some serious healing or explaining in the next couple of weeks, it could become a possibility. The GOP wants to look united going into an election and the payroll tax fight showed they weren't. What's even worst is that with Congress' approval in the 9% range and people viewing that branch as being completely broken having a totally Republican controlled Congress could lead to even more roadblock with the two chambers unable to agree.

My guess is that Boehner will hold onto his position, but only after being taken to the woodshed by his caucus. The Tea Party members will remind him that they are the reason the GOP got a majority in 2010 and the reason he is Speaker, so play nice or they will make life hell on him.

Whichever way it ends up going, one thing is for sure - it's going to be fun as hell to watch. Republicans have loved in the past pointing to a Democratic party divided, mainly over the 2008 primary and the healthcare battle. None of those begin to compare to what we are seeing in the GOP right now.

Oscar Goodman Wants Obama To Apologizes

And we have a new definition of dumb ass – Oscar Goodman:

Sin City's mayor wants President Barack Obama to apologize for saying companies shouldn't visit Las Vegas on the taxpayer's dime.

Oscar Goodman spoke after a regular scheduled meeting with tourism officials where he expressed concern that federal lawmakers might be discouraging travel to the city.

"What's a better place, as I say, than for them to come here," Goodman told KLAS-TV. "And to change their mind and to go someplace else and to cancel _ and at the suggestion of the president of the United States _ that's outrageous."

Obama made the remarks Monday during a town hall meeting in Elkhart, Ind., where the president traveled to muster public support for economic stimulus legislation.

{[}]amp;quot; You can't get corporate jets, you can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer's dime," Obama said.

Um it appears as if Obama was talking in the sense of going to Vegas for a nice little vacation and do some gambling. Goodman can have his tax dollars go for that, but I don’t want mine to. That’s what Goodman is suggesting – that bailout money be used for these luxurious vacations instead of opening the credit markets. Maybe someone should ask the mayor why he hates America so much that he wants to see our financial institutions fail.

Veggie Love

PETA submitted an AD to be aired during the Super Bowl, which NBC rejected. Here is the ad in question:

'Veggie Love': PETA's Banned Super Bowl Ad

Actually I love this ad. I think it sells great, and it’s nothing more than we would see in any other ad. But it turns out there might be a reason for it being banned, and not one you would think:

{[}]lt;p>Last year, they submitted zombie Colonel Sanders spots to FOX for rejection. This time, the animal rights organization says they sent this "Veggie Love" spot to NBC for approval to run during Sunday's Super Bowl. This is of course complete cow manure. PETA submitted this spot for one reason—the disapproval publicity NBC's rejection is generating (this post included). No, they'd sooner go on a fox hunt riding bulls with their bodies smeared in rabbit blood then waste $3 million on 30 seconds of TV ad time. But publicity costs nothing.

Free PR. Looks like PETA one-upped NBC on this one.

Protecting Us From Evil Television

Again we have a White House that is working to protect America from evil-doers:

Complaining that television and radio shows in recent years have "too often pushed the bounds of decency," President Bush signed legislation yesterday to escalate dramatically the penalties against broadcasters who violate federal standards.

"The language is becoming coarser during the times when it's more likely children will be watching television," Bush said, citing a study of nighttime programming. "It's a bad trend, a bad sign." He noted that complaints to regulators have exploded since he took office. "People are saying, 'We're tired of it, and we expect the government to do something about it.' "

Yes - television is what is causing our problems. Television is what caused the violent crime rate to soar last year to its highest level in more than 15 years. It wouldn't have anything to do with Americans struggling harder, children being left alone at a younger age, or poverty rising.

So what happens to the companies that violate the decency standard now? Well here you go-

The decency act, coming two years after one of singer Janet Jackson's breasts was exposed in a "wardrobe malfunction" during a Super Bowl halftime show, increases the maximum penalty for broadcasting indecent material on radio or television between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. from $32,500 to $325,000. The new law does not change the standards of indecency, which is defined as "patently offensive" sexual or excretory content.
