Trayvon Martin

George Zimmerman's Brother May Have Proven Race Was A Factor

Posted 3/25/13 at 11:32am by jamie

That tweet above was done by Robert Zimmerman, the brother of George Zimmerman, the alleged killer of Trayvon Martin:

Robert Zimmerman, Jr., brother of Trayvon Martin shooter George Zimmerman, continued his everything-including-the-racist-kitchen-sink PR offensive on behalf of his brother by repeatedly tweeting a photo comparison of the teenager his brother shot, and De’Marquise Elkins, the 17 year-old who has been detained in the murder of a Georgia infant. Both pictures feature the young men flipping the middle finger at the camera, with the caption “A picture speaks a thousand words…Any questions?”

Zimmerman has, thus far, tweeted the comparison to the Anthony half of Opie and Anthony, Michael Moore, the NAACP, and a Breitbart News editor, as well as the NRA. If Zimmerman’s point is that anyone who uses that gesture is a murderer, then they’re going to have to arrest the entire Garden State Parkway. If you suspect that wasn’t his point, you might be right.

Sounds to me like Robert Zimmerman is becoming the prosecutions biggest asset, creating even more proof that George Zimmerman's actions last year could have been racially motivated. Other tweets make it even more obvious, posting things like:

Teen to West: “Do you want me to shoot your baby?” #TrayvonMartin to #GeorgeZimmerman : You’re gonna die tonight Motherf**ker”

As well as:

Lib media shld ask if what these2 black teens did 2 a woman&baby is the reason ppl think blacks mightB risky

BREAKING: George Zimmerman's Wife Arrested For Perjury

Posted 6/12/12 at 4:44pm by jamie

George isn't the only one in trouble:

George Zimmerman’s wife, Shellie, was booked into the John E. Polk Correctional Facility Tuesday on one count of perjury.

Deputies arrested Shellie Zimmerman, 25, where she was living around 3:30 p.m.

Earlier this month, prosecutors accused Shellie of lying to the court during a bond hearing for her husband in April. Shellie testified by phone about how much money they had, which turned out to be much more than originally claimed.

According to the probable cause affidavit, investigators looked into the financial records of George, Shellie, and George’s sister.

Investigators said the records showed that Shellie transferred more than $74,000 from George’s account to hers.

It was in recorded phone calls between George and Shellie, while he was in jail, that officials heard them discuss their finances and the transferring of money, investigators said.

Earlier this month, when they revoked Zimmerman's bond, I asked in a blog post if this would happen. Now we know it to be the case and it doesn't look like she has much of a defense here either.

Zimmerman's Bond Revoked

The judge in the murder case against George Zimmerman, the man accused of killing Trayvon Martin, took an interesting turn today. Prosecutors argued that Zimmerman mislead the court on his finances, failing to disclose the money he had raised off his legal defense website.

The argument went further in that prosecutors argued Zimmerman's wife, Shelley, lied about the money when she said she knew nothing about it.

And it doesn't stop there. Prosecutors also revealed that Zimmerman has another passport which he never revealed to the court.

All this has lead to the Zimmerman's bond being revoked. He must not report back to jail no later than Sunday afternoon.

This does raise a couple interesting questions, like if Zimmerman's wife could face perjury charges now and if Zimmerman will get a new bond set. Only time will tell on those items, but a man many on the right has been holding up like a hero is suddenly looking more and more like a scumbag.

Affidavit: "Zimmerman confronted Martin"

Posted 4/12/12 at 4:32pm by jamie

The probably cause affidavit against George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin was filed today. In it we learn a couple key things:

It also says Trayvon's mother identified the screams for help heard in a 911 call as those of her son. It also reveals that investigators interviewed a "friend" of Trayvon's who talked to him on the phone in the leadup to the shooting.

Based on the description, it appears the friend was the girl described by Martin family attorneys as his girlfriend.

"During this time, Martin was on the phone with a friend and described to her what was happening," the affidavit said. "The witness advised that Martin was scared because he was being followed through the complex by an unknown male and didn't know why."

Martin tried to run home, the affidavit says, but was followed by Zimmerman. "Zimmerman got out of his vehicle and followed Martin."

The affidavit goes on to say that "Zimmerman disregarded the police dispatcher" who told him to stop, and "continued to follow Martin who was trying to return to his home."

Zimmerman, the affidavit says, "confronted Martin and a struggle ensued."

Key take point one; Zimmerman pursued and confronted Martin. That right there helps explain why Zimmerman is facing a charge of second degree murder instead of manslaughter.

The second point in this document is that his mother has now identified the screaming to be Trayvon's. Remember a few weeks ago a secret witness came out saying it was Zimmerman? Well not anymore.

Breaking From WaPo: George Zimmerman To Be Charged

Posted 4/11/12 at 2:20pm by jamie

The Washington Post is reporting that as early as today the prosecutor in Florida will be charging George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin murder case. So far the WaPo is the only news outlet reporting this information.

Should this be the case it raises some very interesting questions, especially if you consider the timeline:

- Monday Zimmerman met with/talked to prosecutors. This was without the knowledge or consent of his former council.

- Monday Zimmerman launches a legal defense fund website.

- Tuesday Zimmerman's now former attorneys hold a press conference to announce they have lost contact with Zimmerman and would no longer represent him.

Putting all this together, it makes you wonder if Zimmerman and the attorneys didn't have some idea that charges were coming. Maybe that's why the attorneys were quick to drop him and now Zimmerman is trying to get his story out there, through his new surrogate, Sean Hannity...

A Failure In Basic Police Work

Posted 4/9/12 at 9:19am by jamie

The Huffington Post has a lengthy, but very interesting piece up today talking about the failures of the Sanford, Fl. police department in prior investigations:

In the summer of 2010, a masked man gunned down Ikeem Ruffin, 17, in an apartment complex on this city's north side. When police arrived, they found Ruffin dead and another teenager beside the body calling for an ambulance. The next day, police charged the teen with robbery and murder.

Prosecutors dropped the murder charge last August and said another man, still unidentified, pulled the trigger. Teresa Ruffin, the victim’s mother, said the police overlooked important evidence -- including a witness who pointed to another suspect -- and allowed her son's killer to go free.

“They didn’t do their job,” Ruffin said of the police.

Ruffin, who is black, said she sees parallels between how Sanford police officers handled her son’s murder and how they investigated the killing of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teenager shot to death Feb. 26 by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who told police he acted in self-defense.

The entire Trayvon Martin story has not really been about race, but rather about the inability of a police department to properly investigate and a state law that may go too far. Again, this piece is really worth a thorough reading as it does bring into light what has so many outraged. When you're done reading it, ask yourself what would have happened if one simple change was made in the story - Trayvon was the shooter and Zimmerman was the victim. I'm sure there would still be outrage, but it would be coming from the other side of the argument.

The Right's Disgraceful Spin On Trayvon Martin

Posted 3/31/12 at 3:08pm by jamie

The latest spin the right is coming up with to dismiss the Trayvon Martin killing is that lots of people are killed everyday. Rich Lowry at the National Review has even compiled a list and declares this:

Everything about the Trayvon Martin case is a matter of contention. About this, though, there should be no doubt: If Martin had been shot by a black classmate, if he had been caught in a random crossfire, if he had looked at a gang member the wrong way, his death would have been relegated to the back pages of the local newspaper. Not a cause, not even a curiosity: Just another dead young black man. Nothing to see here. Please, move on.

And here we see the total failure of the right to understand the situation. It's not that Trayvon was murdered. It's the fact that the shooter was taken into police custody, questioned and then released. It's the fact that so many different accounts of what happened have come out, even from the police department. In none of the stories Lowry posts is this the case.

But the right just doesn't get it. Or maybe they do get it and are so hellbent on spinning this into something it's not that they will say or do anything. It's kind of like the earlier excuses that racism couldn't be a factor because Trayvon was black and Zimmerman was Hispanic. You know, because a Hispanic couldn't be racist against blacks or vice-a-versa.

Sadly we may never know what happened on the stormy February night in the Sunshine State when Trayvon lost his life. Even if facts do come out, they will be quickly muddied with spin from all sides of the aisle. That makes this tragic loss of life that much more horrible. Everyone needs to relax and work towards a common goal of finding out what happened and how to prevent it from happening again in the future. Stop the spin, stop the bs!

Dan Riehl Pushes Off Old Photo Of Zimmerman As Something New

Posted 3/29/12 at 1:40pm by jamie

ABC obtained the following video surveillance of George Zimmerman being walked into the police station not long after murdering Trayvon Martin:

This week claims came out that Martin had attacked Zimmerman and bloodied his head and broke his nose. In the video there is no visible sign of injuries, though in Zimmerman's defense he could have been cleaned up by EMTs at the scene.

But this hasn't stopped the right wing conspiracy theories. Here's Dan Riehl:

With this mugshot everywhere, what was the point in claiming their video reveals anything given that Zimmerman was treated at the scene and likely cleaned up? Also, as Tom Maguire pointed out, swelling and bruising often don't appear until the next day after a physical confrontation of some sort. What a bunch of nonsense that only inflames an already dangerous situation from ABC.

Gee, no obvious swelling, no bruising at that point. Did we really need some grainy video to throw fuel on a fire, while telling us what we already knew? Of course not. But ABC did it anyway.
