Don't Talk Bad About Sam Brownback!

Posted 11/26/11 at 10:34am by jamie

In what can only be described as one of the most egregious violations of the First Amendment, a high school senior in Kansas was disciplined for making a disparaging tweet about former Senator and now Governor, Sam Brownback:

Emma Sullivan, a senior at Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, was in Topeka on Monday as part of Kansas Youth in Government, a program for students interested in politics and government.

During the session, in which Brownback addressed the group, Sullivan posted on her personal Twitter page:

“Just made mean comments at gov brownback and told him he sucked, in person #heblowsalot”

On Tuesday, Sullivan was called to her principal’s office and told that the tweet had been flagged by someone on Brownback’s staff and reported to organizers of the Youth in Government program.

[SNIP]

Sullivan said the principal ordered her to write letters of apology to Brownback, the school’s Youth in Government sponsor, the district’s social studies coordinator and others.

(emphasis added)

So Brownback's staff has nothing better to do than sit there and read tweets? And there's something even more interesting about that. Look at her tweet again:

“Just made mean comments at gov brownback and told him he sucked, in person #heblowsalot”

What A Tweet Can Tell Us

Posted 5/4/10 at 5:58pm by jamie

As many know I am a Twitter freak. What’s really interesting is the insight you can gain into a person in 140 characters or less. Take Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA):

twtdiodrill

Interesting how he has these concerns today. He claims they have been on MMS for “years”, but I wonder if he tried this push 4 years ago when he voted no against extending the moratorium on new offshore drilling? Just a quick look into Issa’s voting record shows that he has been a great friend to the oil and coal industry:

Local Tea Party Leader Wanted By Police

Posted 4/14/10 at 6:27pm by jamie

This week a local tea party leader made news by tweeting about shooting immigrants. Now that same tea bagger is wanted by police:

Police are searching for a local Tea Party leader in Ohio who is wanted for violating a temporary protection order. Meanwhile, speakers at a Tea Party rally organized by the man, Brian "Sonny" Thomas, have pulled out after he suggested in a tweet that he wanted to shoot Hispanic immigrants -- then blaming it on a Bee Gees song.

Thomas is the founder and president of the Springboro Tea Party in southwest Ohio. He faces a misdemeanor charge after recently going to the home of the mother of his son, in violation of a protection order. The woman had previously told police that their son had returned from Thomas's home with bruises.

Thomas had already been in hot water, after he tweeted during a march in support of immigration reform: "Illegals everywhere today! So many spicks makes me feel like a speck. Grr. Where's my gun?"

I’m sure that other tea baggers will quickly say how this guy isn’t really affiliated with them. That seems to be their common defense on stuff like this, and it’s happening more and more. Welcome to the new party that makes the Republicans look like the morale authority. Now that was an undertaking.

Did The GOP Admit Defeat Today?

Posted 1/29/10 at 8:27pm by jamie

This tweet from Luke Russert seems to indicate so:

GOP aides telling me it was a mistake to allow cameras into Obama's QA with GOP members. Allowed BO to refute GOP for 1.5 hours on TV

It might have been a mistake politically for the GOP, but it was a big win for America. It’s time to stop hiding behind factually wrong talking points and start hearing some truth come out. The GOP got owned today and they know it.

Adding…Maybe the GOP thought Obama would fail without a teleprompter. They believe their own bullshit so much that I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s exactly what happened.

Scarborough’s Tweet Prompts A Warning From MSNBC President

Posted 1/24/10 at 9:29am by jamie

Joe Scarborough’s tweet last week slamming Keith Olbermann has gained some attention, including from their boss:

Griffin sent a memo, obtained by the Huffington Post, to network talent and executive producers clamping down on infighting within the network.

"We have many strong personalities with differing, passionate opinions, but it is important to remember that we are all on the same team," Griffin said in the memo. "I want to reiterate my long-standing policy: We do not publicly criticize our colleagues. This kind of behavior is unprofessional and will not be tolerated."

Earlier this week, "Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough blasted Keith Olbermann on Twitter for his comments that Scott Brown is "an irresponsible, homophobic, racist, reactionary, ex-nude model, tea-bagging supporter of violence against women and against politicians with whom he disagrees."

The Huffington Post has the full memo here. Mediaite, a site founded by MSNBC legal analyst Dan Abrams, adds:

We hear Scarborough apologized to Griffin for his comments. Griffin also talked to Olbermann, and Olbermann didn’t think it merited punishment. So the letter to staff (but really to Scarborough) went out instead.

BREAKING: Chris Dodd To Announce Retirement

Posted 1/6/10 at 12:05am by jamie

Wow they are dropping like flies today:

Embattled Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd (D) has scheduled a press conference at his home in Connecticut Wednesday at which he is expected to announce he will not seek re-election, according to sources familiar with his plans.

Dodd's retirement comes after months of speculation about his political future, and amid faltering polling numbers and a growing sense among the Democratic establishment that he could not win a sixth term. It also comes less than 24 hours after Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) announced he would not seek re-election.

State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is widely expected to step into the void filled by Dodd and, at least at first blush, should drastically increase Democrats' chances of holding the seat.

Dodd has been trailing the Republicans in recent polls, so this is actually good news. People are predicting that Blumenthal will have a much better chance.

UPDATE:

This tweet from PPP Polling explains why a Dodd retirement is great news for Democrats:

Our CT polling is confirming a Blumenthal/Dodd swap would make the seat uber safe for Dems

I got a feeling they have talked Blumenthal into running and figured this would be a great way to soften the blow of Dorgan retiring. The timing makes perfect sense.

Interesting Statement From Porter Goss

Posted 12/31/09 at 10:01am by jamie

Just saw this tweet from Chuck Todd:

Goss: "What we're now seeing is that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence has not made one iota of improvement."

So Goss is saying that his successors haven’t fixed the mess he left behind. That also goes along with what I have been saying – the security measures in place on Christmas day are the same ones put in place under Bush. Blame needs to go to both administrations. Blaming one or the other is highly disingenuous.

The White House And The Evil Collusion With Morning Joe

Posted 12/23/09 at 4:12pm by jamie

Bob touched yesterday on the new meme going through the winutosphere that there is some big collustion going on between the White House and Morning Joe on MSNBC. I would just like to add that I now have evidence of this.

There you have Mika Brzezinski appearing with the President and the first lady. It’s a conspiracy I tell ya!

Why I Have Never Liked Chuck Todd

Posted 11/21/09 at 10:24pm by jamie

While many on the left side of the blogosphere seemed to enjoy Chuck Todd, I have never liked him. I don’t believe he is the “political insight machine” that so many credit him with and here is more proof of it:

smokingcrackrock

John Cole, who caught this little tweet of <cough> brilliance from Todd, says this:

I guess he didn’t pick up on the fact that if they had failed to get the 60 votes, HCR would, for all intents and purposes, be dead in the short run, as the Republicans would filibuster. That is why this is such a big deal- they have overcome the obstructionism of the GOP, and the debate can advance.

Although in fairness to Chuck, he may be more concerned with why Obama didn’t reach out more to President McCain. Not to be too subjective, or anything.

When we see something as important as health care reform clear another hurdle then it is reason to celebrate. Todd’s just pissed because he doesn’t have some big failure to go on about. Screw the millions whose lives will be improved by this reform – Chuckles just wants something to give him more ratings and air time, and the more this babbling idiot is on TV the dumber America becomes.

It’s just another reason why my TV doesn’t turn to MSNBC as much as it used to.
