The Crazies Latch On To Honduras

Posted 6/29/09 at 12:35pm by jamie

Larisa has uncovered some very disturbing posts by the right wing crazies:

I was going to add this as an update to my earlier post, but thought it deserved its own post. Apparently, some glue-sniffing types are hoping that our own military will be inspired by the Honduras coup to overthrow our own president in order to save democracy. I kid you not. I have been reading the comments at several blogs and they are mind-blowing.

This is the exact kind of stuff you would expect to hear in some government report. I don’t know what we would call that report. Maybe something about right wing extremists?

Exit question. What would happen if we had our own military try to overthrow a President as popular as Obama? I think we can pretty much imagine it. We would end up with a civil war in this nation. So basically these wingers are advocating for the destruction of the United States of America. Maybe we should keep Gitmo open, just for them.

Bush Admits It

Bush on King last night:

KING: So there's nothing you've done in the area of treatment of prisoners that causes you any kind of pause?

G. BUSH: No. No. Everything we did was -- you know, it had legal -- legal opinions behind it. Look, you're sitting there, you've captured Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. He's the guy that ordered the September the 11th attacks. And we want to know what he knows in order to protect the United States of America. And I got legal opinions that said whatever we're going to do is legal. And my job is to protect you, Larry. And I've given it my all. I've given it my all.

So it’s legal because Bush went out and got attorneys to say it is legal – law be damned. Hell – why didn’t Clinton just get a lawyer to say “hey, the President can lie under oath, it’s legal”. That would have got away with that whole impeachment mess. Maybe Bernie Madoff should get a lawyer to say his scheme was legal, then he wouldn’t have to worry about facing charges.

Funny, but I always thought the third branch decided what was legal. Why even have a judicial branch if the administrative branch will now decide what is legal and not?

The Obama administration needs pushed to prosecute Bush and everyone involved in this. It’s part of the healing process this country really needs – to know that justice still drives the American way. By not prosecuting, we are opening up a dangerous precedent in which the President can trump the Constitution and the rule of law, and that can’t be allowed to happen.

One Track Mind

John McCain:

My friends, we have reached a crisis, the first probably serious crisis internationally since the end of the Cold War. This is an act of aggression.

McCain last month:

McCAIN: The fact is we had four years of failed policy. We were losing. We were losing the war in Iraq. The consequences of failure and defeat of the United States of America in the first major conflict since 9/11 would have had devastating impacts throughout the region and the world.

Of course Afghanistan doesn't even merit mention from McCain. More at Think Progress.

Rendition Fights Refueled In UK

And Gordon Brown isn't too happy about it:

The fact that US "extraordinary rendition" flights refuelled on a British overseas territory is "a very serious issue," British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Thursday

[SNIP]

"We have just been informed by the United States of America about what actually happened. The United States has expressed regeet about us not knowing about these issues," he said.

"We share the disappointment that everybody has about what actually happened. I think the important thing is now that we put in place the best possible procedures to ensure that this could not happen again."

You know when we have a President who couldn't define sovereignty, don't expect him to follow it.

This Man Wants To Be President?

John McCain trying to talk his way out of his "Christian President" comment:

Later, McCain said, "I would vote for a Muslim if he or she was the candidate best able to lead the country and defend our political values." He added that "the Constitution established the United States of America as a Christian nation."

Which part of the Constitution says that we are a Christian nation? This man swore an oath to uphold the Constitution when he became a Senator and he made this comment? Pandering to the Christian right should not mean selling your soul. John McCain has just proven he will say anything to win votes. Talk about someone who has taken a serious fall. This man is now a disgrace!

Hoyer's Fed Up

During the House debate on the Iraq Resolution, Heather Wilson (R-NM) started following the old GOP meme that the Democrats are cutting funding to the troops. She even said that the resolution will prevent the troops from getting the necessary body armor.

Steny Hoyer has had enough. Following Wilson's remarks he came to the floor to rebut them. Here is the clip, followed by an interesting exchange between Hoyer and Duncan Hunter (R-CA).

Video was just uploaded so give it a minute.

The Republicans continue to try and twist what this resolution says. They don't want to debate the President's strategy. Instead they try to hide behind the troops and turn this into a political attack. Fortunately it is not working.

Executive Order For Faith Based Programs

Posted 3/8/06 at 6:10pm by jamie

Homeland Security and FEMA's failures in Katrina are now getting another round of attention from the President. Actually he is using the failures to support his long time plan of getting "faith based" and "community initiative" programs to take a larger roll in disaster relief. He did this by executive order today:

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and in order to help the Federal Government coordinate a national effort to expand opportunities for faith-based and other community organizations and to strengthen their capacity to better meet America's social and community needs, it is hereby ordered as follows:

You can read the rest of it here. Of course Bush has emphasis on "faith based" as that is his political base also. Actually these organizations were the ones that helped the most in Katrina. Now that he is screwing with them and adding another layer of bureaucracy to the system we might not even be able to rely upon them in future disasters. He needs to fix the problems he has already created before trying to create more problems.
