How Bad Is The State Of The GOP?

Posted 9/8/11 at 9:53pm by jamie

Well when you read headlines like this, you realize that the GOP has degraded into nothing but a classroom full of pre-pubescent children:

John Boehner On Jobs Speech: Republicans, Be 'Respectful' And Attend

That’s right – John Boehner had to slap the wrists of his caucus and tell them to act like grown ups. That’s pretty bad for leaders in the most powerful nation in the country. Of course that’s hard to believe when you consider the circus Boehner caused last week over scheduling of the speech. Perhaps he should lead by example from now on.

AGAIN - The Bush Tax Cuts Did Not Create Jobs!

Posted 8/23/11 at 10:27am by jamie

While corporations are sitting on records amount of cash and still refusing to hire we have the reality absent GOP pushing for more tax cuts for these people. They consider to insist that their almost 30 year old failed experiment in economics is the way to go, that some how corporations will create supply without any demand. It's enough to make your head explode.

Today Think Progress posted this chart. I have seen it before but always forgot to share it. It's a striking tell of what the Bush tax cuts did for the jobs market:

I know many on the right will be quick to dismiss this chart as some form of partisan hackery, compiled using fake numbers. To those people I ask you to look at the data source. This data comes straight from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and at the time of the data, George Bush was President. So if you honestly believe that the Bush administration would alter data to make it look like one of his keystone pieces of legislation was a failure then I'm amazed you even have the common sense to turn on a computer.

For those that do accept this data and realize it is true, especially given the fact that it was produced by the Bush administration, thank you. We can get beyond the partisan rhetoric and talk like grown ups, which is something greatly amiss in our country today.

35 Years Of Known Problems With The Mark 1 Nuclear Reactors

Posted 3/16/11 at 9:50am by jamie

The reactors causing all the problems in Japan were made by G.E. In 1975 three engineers with G.E., who were reviewing the Mark 1 reactors, ended up resigning. Their reason? The Mark 1’s containment design in the even of a loss of cooling was so flawed that it would lead to disaster. Sound familiar? It should because that’s exactly what is happening in Japan right now.

But G.E. apparently believes in their “we bring good things to life” motto to much and refuse to see acknowledge that there could be a problem:

GE told ABC News the reactors have "a proven track record of performing reliably and safely for more than 40 years" and "performed as designed," even after the shock of a 9.0 earthquake.

“Performed as designed”? Is this a design performance of their reactors?

If there was ever a strong case for better government oversight, this is it. While the article doesn’t go into specifics, my guess is that higher-ups at G.E. didn’t like the research teams conclusion that the safety features were flawed. They figured it would cost to much money to fix, and in the end game, it’s all about money. Sure some will say “well if this is the case, G.E. will pay now”, but at what cost? How quick would these people change their tune if one of these reactors were in their backyard and this happened? Pretty damn quick I tell you!

Mixed Feelings On Olbermann

Posted 11/5/10 at 5:32pm by jamie

Keith_Olbermann_and_GlobeBy now I’m sure everyone has heard that Keith Olbermann has been suspended indefinitely from MSNBC for contributing to political campaigns without disclosing those contributions to his superiors at MSNBC.

There has been a lot of back and forth over this decision in the blogosphere and twitterverse today. I have mixed feelings on the story.

In Defense Of MSNBC

MSNBC does have a policy in place:

NBC and MSNBC TV require permission of the president of NBC News. (MSNBC.com is a joint venture of NBC Universal and Microsoft.)

"Anyone working for NBC News who takes part in civic or other outside activities may find that these activities jeopardize his or her standing as an impartial journalist because they may create the appearance of a conflict of interest.  Such activities may include participation in or contributions to political campaigns or groups that espouse controversial positions.  You should report any such potential conflicts in advance to, and obtain prior approval of, the President of NBC News or his designee."

The GOP Continues To Show Their Deep Seeded Racism

Posted 10/20/10 at 9:01am by jamie

kkk_flag From TPM comes this email Dave Bartholomew, the chair of the Virginia Beach GOP, thought was funny enough to forward to other people:

MY DOG

I went down this morning to sign up my Dog for welfare.

At first the lady said, "Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare".

So I explained to her that my Dog is black, unemployed, lazy, can't speak English and has no frigging clue who his Daddy is.

So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify...

My Dog gets his first check Friday.

Is this a great country or what?

Bartholomew offered to resign Monday night over the email, but there are some interesting defenses coming out of other Virginia GOP higher-ups:

David Bartholomew is not a racist and agreed to resign because the e-mail had become a distraction to the Nov. 2 election, said Gary Byler, the 2nd Congressional District GOP chairman, after meeting with Bartholomew.

The e-mail was dated March 15 and sent from the address that Bartholomew uses as party chairman. Bartholomew forwarded it without reading the contents when "he was first getting familiar with the Internet," Byler said.

Republicans Show Their Love For Big Oil

Posted 5/14/10 at 8:28am by jamie

From Politico:

Alaska’s senior senator blocked legislation Thursday that would have dramatically increased liability caps on oil companies, in the wake of one of the industry’s biggest disasters.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) objected to a voice vote request by Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) on the bill, which would have spiked the maximum liability for oil companies after an oil spill from $75 million to $10 billion. The legislation has significant support from Democrats, and the White House has indicated it backs an increase in liability caps.

But Murkowski said the legislation is “not where we need to be right now” and would unfairly advantage large oil companies by pricing the small companies out of the market. Murkowski did signal that she would be open to "look at the liability cap and consider raising it.” Just not at this moment.

Murkowski isn’t worried about smaller oil companies, she’s worried about the big ones – the ones that do things like offshore drilling.

First off, these liabilities are never levied in full. The fact that the maximum liability would only amount to two quarters of profits from BP should also say enough. Imagine some company in another industry causing some disaster on such a scale as the oil spill in the Gulf. It would spell a most likely doom to that company. Instead, this oil spill will cost BP, but not to the point that their future is in question.

Interesting Pt 2.

Another just now moment from Morning Joe. Erin Burnett was on doing her morning economic talk. She then turned to the news that Comcast is looking to buy NBC Universal, something that NBC Universal is strongly denying. Right in the middle of the talk Morning Joe went straight to commercial. When they came back they didn’t even mention the weird break.

It could have been a programming error, but those are generally followed by an explanation. Instead it appears the the higher ups at MSNBC don’t want this news being reported.

Just Wondering

Posted 9/16/09 at 8:04am by jamie

Sen. Richard Shelby was just on Morning Joe and he was, in an oh-so serious voice, expressing concern about ACORN and the possibility of “millions of tax payer dollars wasted”.

Where was Sen. Shelby when we were hearing about all the waste, fraud and abuse of Halliburton and KBR?

Where was his serious face when whistle blowers were talking about KBR feeding our troops spoiled food, so that the higher ups in the corporation could dine in better style?

Where was he when we started learning about our troops being electrocuted because of crappy work being done by U.S. contractors in Iraq?

And this doesn’t go for Shelby alone, but the entire Republican Party and right wing media. They all defended Halliburton and other contractors, and when in power refused to allow hearings.

But the most interesting thing is how the right is acting like President Obama is the CEO of ACORN or something. No he isn’t, but you know who WAS the CEO of Halliburton…Dick Cheney.

I guess for Republicans, playing politics is even more important than the well being of our troops fighting for this country.

A New Republican Leader?

Posted 6/29/09 at 6:43am by jamie

Chris Cillizza thinks we could be seeing the emergence of a new Republican Leader in Lindsey Graham:

Graham, who spent the 2008 election cycle as Sen. John McCain's loyal sidekick, appeared alongside former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, the GOP frontrunner in advance of 2012, and managed to stand out.

Why? Because unlike other Republicans who seem to be so fixated on scoring political points on President Obama, Graham was willing to point out where his own party had strayed while also making a reasonable argument for GOP ideals.

Asked about Gov. Mark Sanford's extramarital affair, Graham, who is close to the governor, said that he was "disappointed" in his friend's behavior and praised Obama as "one of the better role models in the entire country for the idea of being a good parent, a good father."

Graham is playing the good guy right now, but that isn’t what the higher-ups in the GOP want. Instead they want attack dogs; people who will viciously attack anything President Obama does. That will prevent someone like Graham from becoming a de facto leader, and will help keep the GOP in the minority for some time to come.

Wow They Are Desperate

Posted 10/15/08 at 3:53pm by jamie

The wingnuts have been in an uproar over a "news article" posted by some group called African Press International, in which Michelle Obama allegedly calls the organization and goes on a rampage. Some of the more notable journalists on the right have reported this is entirely false, yet the wingnut hysteria continues. Here's what they are saying at the loony bin known as Newsbusters:

Double WOW! As I stated, African Press International has been in existence for over two years and has filed over a thousand stories. So will the MSM investigate this? Meanwhile this story is gaining enormous steam in the Blogosphere.

UPDATE: Because of the high level of interest in this story, API has just posted a phone number where they can be contacted for verification. Calls must be made between Oct. 16 and 18. Here is the number posted on their site: 004793299739. To call from the USA, the number is: 011-4793299739.

Thousands of news stories? Really? Well I decide to check them out in Google news search and all I found was four mentions of this big organizations. All today, nothing reported by them, just people reporting on this scam.

Post-Debate Thoughts (updated)

Posted 10/2/08 at 11:33pm by jamie

My God could Gwen Ifill have been any more slanted towards Biden? Ok - had to get that little joke out of my system.

Despite having one hell of a cold, I managed to watch the whole thing. Honestly, it was exactly what I expected it to be. No massive screw ups from either candidate. One small thing I did notice was that Palin was looking at an awful lot of notes while answering. Perhaps I picked that up since I was watching and not trying to live blog it.

I don't see tonight's performances helping or hurting either campaign significantly. It was basically a wash. Palin may have calmed some nerves on the right, but she didn't bring anyone over. The same with Biden and his known history of gafffs. I do however think Palin fell flat on her face when she tried to play Reagan with her "there you go again Joe" line. Watching the reaction thing on CNN, it appears the focus group also thought the same thing.

So I am sure people on the left will be upset the Palin didn't totally implode, but that's not a problem. She now has a month of doing interviews and more time for Couric style blunders with no more debates to try and recoup a little comfort amongst the population.

Also I notice the polls over all are showing that Biden won. I have to agree. Yeah I am somewhat partial, but putting that aside, I saw answers out of Biden with great substance. I didn't see that so much out of Palin. It also helps restore a little faith in the American electorate since it appears they may have seen the same thing.

UPDATE:

I Just Love Campaign Emails

Posted 9/22/08 at 2:31pm by jamie

Here is the latest one from McCain's campaign being attributed to Sarah Palin (with my own thoughts injected):

When I joined John McCain as his running mate, I knew I was in for a roller coaster ride of ups and downs on the campaign trail. But, I want you to know that I joined John McCain and the others on our ticket in this great election because I'm putting our country first.

John McCain and I have been called "mavericks" and "reformers" because we're guided by shared values and principles and we're not afraid to stand up to the status quo in their defense. And that's why we want you to send us, and other reformers like us, to Washington.

Will you help send us to Washington by making a generous contribution of any amount to McCain-Palin Victory 2008 right away? Your financial support will go a long way in electing Reform Republicans in November.

Army Now Investigating The Christian Coins

Posted 5/30/08 at 1:51pm by jamie

Following up on Christian Coin-gate that I reported on yesterday, the Army is now conducting an investigation:

The US military said on Friday it was probing complaints that marines handed out coins inscribed with a verse from the Bible to a group of Sunni Muslims in Iraq, sparking outrage among local residents.

It said a service member involved in the incident in the former flashpoint city of Fallujah west of Baghdad was removed from his duties on Thursday.

"US forces initiated an investigation into reports that a coin with a Bible verse written in Arabic was distributed to Iraqi citizens as they passed through a Fallujah entry control point," the military said in a statement.

Again this needs to be looked at beyond being an individual acting on his own. I don't know of any stores in the U.S. that sells coins with biblical versus written in Arabic on them. I hope this doesn't become another Abu Gharib, where our soldiers are treated as the scapegoats for the higher ups piss poor decision making.

Clinton Could Force Colorado To Go Republican Again

Posted 2/14/08 at 9:31am by jamie

I got a feeling we will see more news like this in the coming months:

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows that Barack Obama (D) currently holds a seven-point advantage over John McCain (R), 46% to 39%. However, if the Democrats nominate Hillary Clinton, McCain will begin the race with a fourteen point advantage, 49% to 35%. %. National polling, updated daily, currently shows the same general trend with Obama currently performing better than Clinton in match-ups with McCain.

Sixty percent (60%) of Colorado voters currently have a favorable opinion of Obama while just 36% hold an unfavorable view.

McCain earns favorable reviews from 55% and less flattering assessments from 42%

Clinton is viewed favorably by 44% and unfavorably by 54%

I am sure Obama's numbers will go down as the election rolls on, but I can't see Hillary's going up.
