GOP War On Women Backlash

Posted 4/2/12 at 9:40am by jamie

It looks like the GOP's attempts to paint women as irresponsible nitwits that have no idea about their own reproductive health is really starting to pay off - for President Obama:

In the fifth Swing States survey taken since last fall, Obama leads Republican front-runner Mitt Romney 51%-42% among registered voters just a month after the president had trailed him by two percentage points.

The biggest change came among women under 50. In mid-February, just under half of those voters supported Obama. Now more than six in 10 do while Romney's support among them has dropped by 14 points, to 30%. The president leads him 2-1 in this group.

This is a huge shift and to show the gender gap now present:

Romney's main advantage is among men 50 and older, swamping Obama 56%-38%.

And it looks like Women are really abandoning the GOP as a whole:

While women typically are more likely to identify themselves as Democrats than men are, that difference widens to a chasm in the USA TODAY poll. By 41%-24%, women call themselves Democrats; men by 27%-25% say they're Republicans.

But I'm sure they don't know what they are talking about. They are just a bunch of dumb broads after all. Or that's at least what I'm sure the Republican brains are saying in a backroom somewhere.

Redistribution Of Wealth!!!!!!

Does your paycheck still make you cry? Do you wonder why the bosses are all giddy like high school girls? Well this could be why (via Think Progress):

At a time most employees can barely remember their last substantial raise, median CEO pay jumped 27% in 2010 as the executives’ compensation started working its way back to prerecession levels, a USA TODAY analysis of data from GovernanceMetrics International found.Workers in private industry, meanwhile, saw their compensation grow just 2.1% in the 12 months ended December 2010, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

So the big bosses saw raises 13x that of their employees. How can we celebrate that? I know! Let’s give them even more tax cuts, and to pay for it, we can raise the taxes on those that saw the very generous 2.1% raises.

And to show just how bad this problem is, Think Progress adds this little tidbit of joy:

Median CEO pay last year was $9 million, the highest since 2007. The median CEO bonus was $2.2 million. Family wealth, meanwhile, is currently down $12.8 trillion from its 2007 peak.

FOX News Had Another “Error”

Posted 2/23/11 at 12:07pm by jamie

The propaganda station is at their usual old tactics in swaying public opinion:

On the February 23 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends, co-host Brian Kilmeade brought on a panel of guests to discuss the ongoing protests in Wisconsin, sparked by Gov. Scott Walker's proposal to cut benefits and eliminate most collective bargaining rights for some public employees. While talking to Democratic strategist Robert Zimmerman, Kilmeade discussed the results of a recent USA Today/Gallup poll to falsely claim that "61 percent" of those polled are "in favor of taking [collective bargaining rights] away."

The poll Kilmeade is talking about is here, complete with this graphic:

Tea Party Misinformation With A Hint Of Racism

The wingers have been going on about a report in USA Today last week showing a record increase in the number of people receiving federal aid:

Government anti-poverty programs that have grown to meet the needs of recession victims now serve a record one in six Americans and are continuing to expand.

More than 50 million Americans are on Medicaid, the federal-state program aimed principally at the poor, a survey of state data by USA TODAY shows. That's up at least 17% since the recession began in December 2007.

At first glance you would think a 17% increase is disproportionate to the economic problems. I mean unemployment has only gone up 5%, so why has things like Medicaid enrollment gone up 17%?

A big contributor can be seen in the underemployment numbers – those seeking fulltime employment but having to settle for part time. A vast majority of these people have to settle for a big pay decrease and accept jobs that have no benefits. A lot of these people are the bread winner for the family, so their economic woes translate into economic woes for their dependents; spouse, children.

Then what about medical costs? In other countries a person making the equivalent of $30,000 a year and raising a family can afford a lot of medical costs out of pocket. That’s not true in the U.S. A lot of preventive care and prescription drugs cost up to ten times what they cost in any other country. Those costs have also continued to increase beyond the rate of inflation and despite the current recession. Likewise the cost of health care coverage has continued to increase at historic rates. All of this amounts to more people having to seek help.

Is This What Tea Baggers Are Against?

The lowest tax levels since 1950?

Amid complaints about high taxes and calls for a smaller government, Americans paid their lowest level of taxes last year since Harry Truman's presidency, a USA TODAY analysis of federal data found.

Some conservative political movements such as the "Tea Party" have criticized federal spending as being out of control. While spending is up, taxes have fallen to exceptionally low levels.

Federal, state and local taxes — including income, property, sales and other taxes — consumed 9.2% of all personal income in 2009, the lowest rate since 1950, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reports. That rate is far below the historic average of 12% for the last half-century. The overall tax burden hit bottom in December at 8.8.% of income before rising slightly in the first three months of 2010.

So go ahead baggers and protest the Democrats and their “high taxes”. And let’s have the Republicans out there saying “the Republican Party will lower your taxes”. We all know the truth that historically the party that has raised taxes is the Republican Party, unless you happen to be in that top 2% of the economic wealth of our nation. Of course most of those people are out there saying they should be paying more in taxes.

Headlines The Make Me Smile

From USA Today:

Oil spill could sink Obama's offshore drilling plan

If there was ever a silver lining to something so horrible, this is it. But at what costs?

A third leak has been discovered, and a fire-fighting expert said the disaster may become the biggest oil spill ever.

[SNIP]

Some 5,000 barrels (210,000 gallons) a day were now thought to be gushing into the sea 50 miles off Louisiana's coast, said the US Coastguard's Rear Admiral Mary Landry.

Already people are saying this is going to trump Exxon-Valdez and could be the worst disaster in U.S. history. We really don’t need to increase the chances for this to happen by increasing offshore drilling and hopefully it is providing a serious wake up call to the White House.

A Stronger Than Expected Recovery?

Posted 4/27/10 at 8:18am by jamie

That’s what leading economists are saying (via Cesca):

The recovery is shaping up to be stronger than expected and there is little risk the economy will slip back into a recession, according to USA TODAY's quarterly survey of 46 leading economists.

Yet most still say the rebound will fall short of the sharp, V-shaped upturns that often follow severe slumps, and the 9.7% jobless rate will fall slowly.

As the Fed meets to assess the economy this week, seven in 10 economists say they're more optimistic than they were three months ago.

"I think we've gotten to a point where it's a self-sustaining recovery," says Standard & Poor's chief economist David Wyss.

Even Joe Scarborough is going on about the economy improving this morning. This kind of news will really help Democrats out this fall, especially if you tie it to the Republicans filibustering financial reform. Then you can also add the countless sound bites of Republicans saying “get rid of the stimulus” and you got a big winning campaign for the Democrats. Now we only need the powers to be to seize on all this news and inform the American people of what is happening.

David Sirota Lays Out His Arguments Against The Bill

Posted 12/23/09 at 12:14pm by jamie

Appearing in USA Today is an article by David Sirota laying out the arguments against the Senate Bill:

The Senate health care bill betrays the promise of fundamental "change" Democrats made during the 2008 election. It cloaks a handout to the health industry in the veneer of "reform."

Though it includes some positive subsidies and regulatory tweaks, the bill creates few mechanisms to halt premium increases, bust insurance monopolies and end price discrimination — and it includes no public insurance option.

Worst of all, it doesn't actually extend "new coverage" to 30 million more Americans. Through the "individual mandate," it simply makes people criminals if they don't buy expensive insurance from the private corporations that helped create the health care crisis in the first place.

President Obama says this legislation "stand(s) up to the special interests" — but after spending millions of dollars on campaign contributions and lobbying, the special interests clearly disagree. When the Senate bill was unveiled, health stocks skyrocketed. Meanwhile, an insurance insider told reporters, "We win."

Obama Has A Good Polling Sunday

Posted 9/28/08 at 1:52pm by jamie

The polls are starting to break more for Obama. Here is what we have so far today:

Rasmussen:

Gallup:

The daily trackers would be from Thursday, Friday and Saturday, meaning that we are now seeing the full result of McCain's little stunt this past week reflecting badly for him.

To The Point

Posted 8/25/08 at 10:47am by jamie

USA Today:

Obama holds a 47%-43% edge over McCain among registered voters and a 48%-45% edge among likUSA Todayely voters. Both leads are within the margin of error of +/—4 percentage points.

To this, Bob Cesca points out:

The previous numbers showed McCain 49, Obama 45.

Why can't McBush close the deal?

So why is it the former POW, maverick, 25 year veteran of the Senate, "foreign policy expert" can't close the deal against the "latte sipping, muslim, ultra liberal, defeatist, terrorist sympathizer, elitist, non-experienced" Barack Obama?

McCain has decades of being a house hold name, that is very much loved by the media. Obama is the new kid on the block. While people say Obama should be way out ahead, I keep thinking why? You got a new brand going against a long term brand. Let's also not forget that this is the first black man running on a major party ticket for POTUS in our history.

So media - why isn't McCain crushing Obama?

More Questions About GOP Outrage

Posted 8/29/07 at 11:45am by jamie

The outrage over Larry Craig's conviction is still loud and strong. I find it interesting to see all the outrage on the right. Today's USA Today highlights some of this.

I am still baffled by the outrage over Craig's conviction by some of the same people who came to the defense of Mark Foley. Foley's actions are far worse than the actions of Craig.

Thinking back to last fall, remember how a lot of these Republicans even went as far as to attack the children Foley was after?

I think everyone needs to call their Republican members of Congress and Senate and ask why there is such a disgusting double standard. It is disgusting because there is no real victim in Craig's crime. There were victims in what Foley did - victims that are children.

I guess it could be summed up best by saying that the Republican party does not care about children. This proves that their priorities are only within votes. They are truly the party of disgust.
