Is The Left Finally Growing A Spine?

Posted 4/25/11 at 10:21am by jamie

Finally we are starting to see some new ads come out from the left exposing the Republican’s quest to destroy Medicare. The first one is coming from Americans United for Change, in which they are targeting certain Republican members of the House who are supporting the Ryan Plan. Here’s the ad, which will air in the districts of Steve King (R-IA), Sean Duffy (R-WI), Chip Cravaack (R-MN)  and Paul Ryan himself:

Then the DCCC comes out with a new web ad, expanding the field. In “Broken Promises: House Republicans Vote To End Medicare”, the DCCC seizes on the Republicans shredding their “Seniors’ Bill of Rights

Hopefully this is the start of the left showing more spine and countering the hypocrisy and ideological destruction of America the GOP is bringing down. All we need now is a larger audience for these ads – hopefully one of a national scale.

F-35 Engine Cut Passed

Posted 2/16/11 at 3:00pm by jamie

Following up on my earlier post, Speaker Boehner was just handed another defeat:

In a sign that some freshman Republicans were willing to cut military spending, the House voted 233-198 on Wednesday to cancel an alternate fighter jet engine that the Bush and Obama administrations had tried to kill for the last five years.

The vote marked another instance in which some of the new legislators, including members of the Tea Party, broke ranks with the House speaker, John A. Boehner, a Republican from Ohio, where the engine provided more than 1,000 jobs.

Many of the 87 freshman Republicans in the House had initially been hesitant to trim military spending as part of their drive to reduce the budget deficit.

It’s going to be interesting to hear the spin Boehner puts on this. Will he call it job killing, when he constantly tries to say that the government doesn’t create jobs? I am eagerly waiting to hear.

BREAKING: START Passes The Senate

Posted 12/22/10 at 3:20pm by jamie

The Senate has just ratified the START treaty by a 71-26 vote. All Democrats voted for the bill and 13 Republicans, 1/4 of the Republican caucus, broke with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to ratify the new treaty.

(On a side note, sorry for the lack of posting. With the holidays, a bad cold and massive work load, I haven’t been able to keep up with anything!)

Weak Knee Leaders

Posted 9/23/10 at 9:40am by jamie

scaredy cat You can tell an election is just right around the corner by this summation Greg did:

* Are Senate Dems going wobbly? It appears that Senate Dems may abandon the idea of holding a vote on extending the middle class tax cuts. Incredibly, the thinking is that a vote is unnecesesary because the lines on this issue have already been drawn clearly enough.

As one Senate aide put it: "By the president being out there and individual members talking at home, it's clear where the lines are drawn in this debate, and you don't need the vote to cement that." As if more clarity on an issue where the public clearly sides with Dems would hurt! Apparently a final decision may come today.

* Et tu, Steny? And over in the House, it looks like Steny Hoyer may be the lead culprit in urging House Dems not to be aggressive in framing the choice between the parties in the runup to the midterms.

John Boehner’s Unemployed Brother Has No Problem With His Brother’s Vote

Posted 7/23/10 at 7:23pm by jamie

This is an interesting article from the AP:

A brother of U.S. House Republican leader John Boehner (BAY'-nur) would have seen his unemployment benefits dry up if the congressman had succeeded in his push to defeat an extension-of-benefits bill passed this week.

Boehner and most fellow Republicans opposed the measure Thursday, but 61-year-old Bob Boehner said Friday he isn't bitter.

Bob says he doesn't want his brother voting for government programs that aren't paid for, even if that hurts him. He lost his job with the southwest Ohio city of Reading in February.

Well that’s really nice and brotherly, but there is something interesting here. The bill that passed was for the people on long-term unemployment. Bob is still in his initial 6 month period for Ohio, meaning he hasn’t even hit his first extension. In other words, while the people weren’t getting paid, Bob still was. That’s a nice little fact for the AP to omit.

Another thing worth mentioning. Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) is very good. I have been in it from my firefighting days and my father is a retired city worker getting a very nice pension from it. I don’t know how long Bob Boehner has held his job, but I got a feeling his future isn’t looking as dark as those 30-50 year olds that have no future right now.

Again – just some little facts to put this into perspective.

Now Republicans Oppose The Afghanistan War? Well If You’re Michael Steele….

Posted 7/2/10 at 12:46pm by jamie

The chairman of the RNC has done it again. Check out this video of him blasting and lying about the Afghanistan War.

In this Steele calls Afghanistan a “war of Obama's choosing”. Does this moron even know who decided to invade Afghanistan? Does Michael Steele and the RNC believe that those who senselessly murdered 3,000 lives on American soil in 2001 shouldn’t be punished?

Remember – a vote for a Republican is a vote for the terrorists. This is the absolute proof of that and unless other prominent voices in the Republican Party come out and blast Steele for his idiotic and careless comments, then it is the platform of the Republican Party.

RIP Robert Byrd

Posted 6/28/10 at 7:22am by jamie

The Senate's longest serving member, Robert Byrd, died this morning at the age of 92. This really isn't a big shocker. Byrd's health has been deteriorating for years and given his age, it was pretty much expected that this was coming after the news of his serious condition yesterday.

As far as a replacement for Byrd, well Nate Silver points out the timing on this. It looks like there will be a special election. If Byrd would have held on one more week, then the governor would have been able to appoint a replacement.

And then there's the big question - the fate of financial reform. That's pretty much uncertain now that the Democrats have one less vote. My guess is that it will be gutted even further to bring on Snowe or Collins.

John Boehner Wins His Primary

Posted 5/5/10 at 8:45am by jamie

Last night John Boehner won his primary with 85% of the vote. A win for Boehner was all but guaranteed, but what makes it interesting is that the two challengers Boehner faced gained a cumulated total of 15% of the votes. These were two people who essentially did no campaigning at all and in a closed primary. So that means there are 15% of Republicans in OH-08 that wanted someone rather than Boehner.

oh08gopprim

This now sets the stage for November, where Boehner will have to defend his seat against Democrat Justin Coussoule. Coussoule is the first opponent Boehner has faced who is actively running and even embracing social media as a campaign tool. Boehner won in 2006 by about 30% against a Democratic candidate who basically didn’t campaign and only raised $5,000.

Now we got Boehner facing an actual challenger and that could make for a close race here in OH-08. Justin does have an uphill battle in this usually redder than red district, but given the low approval ratings of Boehner, we could maybe see a November miracle happen.

So How Will The GOP’s Campaign Pan Out This Year?

Posted 3/22/10 at 12:05pm by jamie

The GOP has already been saying that they will run on repealing healthcare. Let’s look at the things that will already be enacted at that time.

NO DISCRIMINATION AGAINST CHILDREN WITH PRE?EXISTING CONDITIONS — Prohibits new health plans in all markets plus grandfathered group health plans from denying coverage to children with pre?existing conditions. Effective 6 months after enactment.

So will Republicans campaign to let these children go without coverage? I don’t know how well that will work. They are so worried about stopping abortion, yet once the child is out of the uterus they are on their own? Yes – try to argue that one Republicans.

IMMEDIATE HELP FOR THE UNINSURED UNTIL EXCHANGE IS AVAILABLE (INTERIM HIGH?RISK POOL) — Provides immediate access to affordable insurance for Americans who are uninsured because of a preexisting condition — through a temporary subsidized high?risk pool. Effective 90 days after enactment.

A high risk pool – the very same thing that the GOP’s 2008 presidential candidate campaigned on. Are the Republicans going to get rid of one of the cornerstones of the McCain campaign? Will they be able to face the people this will affect and tell them “sorry – you’re out of luck”?

EXTENDS COVERAGE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE UP TO 26TH BIRTHDAY THROUGH PARENTS’ INSURANCE — Requires new health plans and certain grandfathered plans to allow young people up to their 26th birthday to remain on their parents’ insurance policy, at the parents’ choice. Effective 6 months after enactment.

Driehaus Outraged Over Anti-HCR Ad

Posted 3/18/10 at 1:42pm by jamie

This is NOT the way to debate issues:

U.S. Rep. Steve Driehaus, D-Cincinnati, says an ad showing his two young daughters went too far in the heated debate over health care.

A spokesman says Driehaus was outraged by an advertisement Wednesday in The Cincinnati Enquirer featuring a large photo of him with his daughters. The ad was paid for by the Committee to Rethink Reform, a Washington-based group opposed to the health care overhaul nearing a vote.

Committee spokeswoman Sarah Longwell says showing the children was a mistake and that the group will take out another ad to apologize.

The Enquirer ran its own full-page retraction and apology Thursday.

What amazes me is that the Enquirer ran a full page retraction. Why not just deny the ad to begin with? It’s because the right wing Cincinnati Enquirer wanted it to go out.

$940 Billion Over 10 Years

Posted 3/18/10 at 9:32am by jamie

That’s the cost of the House health care bill. The full CBO report isn’t out yet, but it should be rather soon now. The Hill has some other early numbers:

The nonpartisan budget office told lawmakers that the health bill set for a vote this weekend would cut the deficit by $130 billion over the next decade, and $1.2 trillion  in the second decade of the plan's implementation.

This should set us up for a vote on Sunday.

89% Of Liberals Support Passing HCR

Posted 3/17/10 at 1:23pm by jamie

Let’s face it – there’s tons of problems with the current health care reform package, but it beats the alternative, which would be the status quo. Liberals are realizing that:

Dennis Kucinich's flip on the health care vote this morning is symbolic of a broader shift among liberals. Last month 73% said they supported the plan with 19% opposed. Now 89% say they support the plan with only 3% opposed. Whether it's because of the President's increasing visibility on the issue or because liberals finally decided the current bill is as good as they're going to get and better than nothing, there's been a big rise in support since early February.

I’m waiting to hear from certain “progressive bloggers” how we are all wrong in wanting this bill instead of nothing.

REPORT: Dennis Kucinich Will Come Out In Support Of HCR Tomorrow

Posted 3/16/10 at 8:12pm by jamie

Dennis Kucinich is holding a press conference tomorrow morning to announce his vote on the health care reform bill. Just now on MSNBC, Howard Fineman just reported that his sources are telling him that Kucinich will announce he is supporting the bill now. If this is the case, then this is very big news and a key hurdle to final passage.
