Who Is The Real John McCain?

Posted 10/14/08 at 6:03pm by jamie

You can't select who ends up sitting on a board with you, but you sure as hell can select who works on your campaign. So perhaps John McCain needs to explain this to the American people:

William Timmons, the Washington lobbyist who John McCain has named to head his presidential transition team, aided an influence effort on behalf of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to ease international sanctions against his regime.

The two lobbyists who Timmons worked closely with over a five year period on the lobbying campaign later either pleaded guilty to or were convicted of federal criminal charges that they had acted as unregistered agents of Saddam Hussein's government.

During the same period beginning in 1992, Timmons worked closely with the two lobbyists, Samir Vincent and Tongsun Park, on a previously unreported prospective deal with the Iraqis in which they hoped to be awarded a contract to purchase and resell Iraqi oil. Timmons, Vincent, and Park stood to share at least $45 million if the business deal went through.

Of course whenever McCain is asked about the lobbyists on his campaign he ends up lying to the American people. So who is the real John McCain? Do we really want someone who employs allies of Saddam Hussein to run this country?

Norquist Hired Illegal Immigrant.

There is a saying about people in glass houses not throwing stones. The Republican Party has put themselves on such a high platform over the years, it's no wonder the entire thing is crumbling down around them. The latest from their conservative icon:

A former California Republican Party official who resigned last year in a controversy over his immigration status had no valid visa or work permit during his high-profile career as a Washington lobbyist for conservative icon Grover Norquist, newly filed court records show.

Michael Kamburowski, an Australian citizen who served briefly as chief operating officer of the state GOP, worked from 1995 to 2000 as a vice president of Americans for Tax Reform in Washington, D.C., an organization headed by Norquist - an architect of modern conservatism who has advised President Bush and top GOP political leaders.

For Norquist, Kamburowski lobbied Congress on dozens of issues, including immigration reform, according to his resume. He also directed the Norquist organization's Ronald Reagan Legacy Project, an effort to rename public buildings to honor the former president.

So he advised Bush, was a head of the state GOP in California and lobbied for immigration reform. I expect the wingnuts to circle the wagons around Grover on this, which will raise the question about the immigration reform. Exactly which immigration did he want to reform? This could have some serious racial implications.

Ney Ney Ney Goodbye!

Posted 8/7/06 at 1:10pm by jamie

This is great news for Ohio:

Republican Rep. Bob Ney (news, bio, voting record), dogged by a corruption scandal involving disgraced Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, will not seek re-election in the November mid-term election, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said on Monday.

"Bob Ney was forced out of this race by the reality of an electorate demanding change from the culture of corruption in Washington and a Congress that compulsively puts special interests first at every opportunity," the DCCC, which helps organize and fund key races, said in a statement.

Ney's office could not be reached for comment.

The National Republican Congressional Committee said it would make a comment on Ney at around 9 a.m. EDT. (1300 GMT).

The DCCC had targeted Ney's race in central Ohio as one of their best chances to win one of 15 seats the party needs to wrest control of the House of Representatives from the Republicans.

Ney has asked Ohio State Sen. Joy Padgett to run in his place, the DCCC said.

If Ney and his infinite stubbornness decided not to run then he apparently is figuring on being charged very soon. So who will be next to fall from the Abramoff tree of corruption?

Ralph Reed Losing Support

Posted 2/6/06 at 6:19pm by jamie

It looks like Ralph Reeds past dealings with Abramoff are really taking a
toll on his run for lieutenant Governor in Georgia:

Twenty-one Republican state senators on Friday called for Ralph Reed to
withdraw from the contest for lieutenant governor, declaring that his ties
to Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff could jeopardize the re-election of
Gov. Sonny Perdue and the rest of the GOP ticket.

"For the good of the Republican Party, for the good of Georgia, we
encourage Ralph Reed to withdraw from this race," stated the petition signed
by the senators, all of whom support Reed's GOP rival, state Sen. Casey
Cagle of Gainesville.

Reed rejected the petition as a useless stunt, and expressed confidence
that his record and ideas would prevail.

here.

This could lead to some major finance problems for Reed. This is somewhat the
tone around the country though. Many Republicans seem to be disappointed with
the people running on their ticket yet they are limited with options. Another
example of this can be seen in Florida where Republicans have tried to get
others to run instead of Katherine Harris in the Senate race there.

Poor Jack's Dad Is Upset

OK. This has to be one of the most ridiculous things I have read in ages. Via
the Cincinnati Enquirer:

Abramoff's dad furious at Clooney jab

By Erica Solvig The (Palm Springs, Calif.) Desert Sun

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The father of controversial Washington lobbyist
Jack Abramoff is responding to actor George Clooney for what he's describing
as a "glib and ridiculous attack" on his son.

Frank Abramoff of Rancho Mirage, Calif., in a letter addressed to Clooney
and sent Thursday to the Desert Sun newspaper of Palm Springs, said he was
watching the Golden Globes on Monday night when Clooney, during his
acceptance speech for best supporting actor, thanked Jack Abramoff "just
because" and made a comment about the lobbyist's name.

"Who would name their kid Jack with the last words 'off' at the end of
your last name? No wonder that guy is screwed up," said Clooney, a Kentucky
native, during the internationally televised awards show.

In the letter, Frank Abramoff furiously defends the name, saying his son
is named after Frank's father. In the two-page letter, he calls Clooney's
act a "lapse in lucidity" and an "obscene query."

He also wrote: "One wonders how your father would respond, were the roles
reversed." Clooney's father, Nick, is a veteran Cincinnati journalist.

Former GOP lobbyist Abramoff admitted bribing public officials and
defrauding his American Indian clients of millions of dollars.

In a telephone interview with the Desert Sun on Thursday, Frank Abramoff
said Clooney was "an idiot" and described the actions as "pure,
unadulterated stupidity."

UPDATED - Abramoff To Enter Guilty Plea Today

Posted 1/3/06 at 3:48pm by jamie

Jack Abramoff is to enter his guilty plea today in Florida clearing the way
for federal investigators to go after some big names on Capital Hill.

WASHINGTON - Lobbyist Jack Abramoff will plead guilty to federal charges
in Washington and Miami, clearing the way for him to cooperate in a massive
government investigation of influence peddling involving members of
Congress, lawyers said Tuesday.

As part of the deal, prosecutors were filing conspiracy, fraud and tax
evasion charges against the embattled lobbyist, a Justice Department
official said.

Abramoff was scheduled to appear at a hearing in U.S. District Court here
later Tuesday, said department spokesman Bryan Sierra. Abramoff was expected
to plead guilty to three charges as part of his agreement.

Abramoff's attorney has scheduled a press conference today at 12:15.

Considering Abramoff's former partner Michael Scanlon has already made a plea
deal, Washington must is certain to be on pins and needles. Perhaps 2006 will be
the year of justice.

UPDATE

The AP is reporting that a federal offical has told them the government has conspiracy, fraud and tax evasion charges against Abramoff. The story keeps getting better. I will have more as soon as it becomes available.

Breaking News: Abramoff Arrested!

Washington Post:

Abramoff Indicted in Fraud Case

Washington Lobbyist Arrested in L.A.

By James V. Grimaldi Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, August 11, 2005; 5:51 PM

MIAMI, Aug. 11 -- Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff was indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday as part of a wide-ranging fraud case stemming from the purchase of a Florida casino cruise line from a businessman later murdered in Fort Lauderdale, the U.S. attorney announced.

Abramoff, a key figure in ethics investigations into House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), was arrested in Los Angeles in late afternoon Eastern time and was expected to be taken to a U.S. magistrate there. He was indicted along with Adam Kidan, the former owner of the Dial-A-Mattress franchise in Washington. Kidan, 41, of New York City, will surrender to the FBI here by Friday morning, his attorney, Martin I. Jaffe, said in a written statement.

Abramoff and Kidan were indicted on five counts of wire fraud and conspiracy. The maximum penalty for each of the six counts is five years in prison and $250,000 fine.

In the statement, Kidan said, "I did nothing wrong and these allegations are totally unfounded." He also said he has "cooperated fully with the federal investigation."

Abramoff, 46, remains the subject of a separate federal corruption investigation in Washington stemming from his work for casino-rich Indian tribes.

A federal grand jury in Fort Lauderdale has been investigating allegations of bank fraud, the details of which are outlined in papers filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

A Game of Cowboys and Indians

Posted 6/23/05 at 2:33pm by jamie

Our childhood days of fun, running through the woods, hiding behind trees
only to jump out and catch our enemy. We would take turns, one day I would be
the cowboy, then the next day it was my turn to be an Indian. It was a great
summer past time comprising of exercise and go old harmless fun.

For Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, the fun never seemed to end. Instead
he changed the rules of the game and made it into something not so harmless and
with somewhat less exercise. Jack Abramoff’s idea of a good old game of cowboys
and Indians consists of a few key elements. The cowboys are comprised of Jack
Abramoff, Michael Scanlon, and for Christian Coalition executive director, now
running for Georgia lieutenant governor-Ralph Reed. Their enemies are none other
than the American Indians. This game has a prize for greater than ego. The booty
in this game exceeds $82 million.

A Senate panel yesterday, chaired by Republican John McCain, said the
lobbyist group has possibly committed mail and wire fraud and these allegations
should be pursued by the Justice Department. The Justice Department is already
looking into more than $82 million that has been defrauded from Indian tribes
around the nation. Allegations were also made into tax fraud, brining the
Internal Revenue Service into the bigger picture now. The Washington Post has an
excellent article on this which can be read

here
. Nightline also did a report on it this week, and they have great
resources including emails which can be viewed by visiting
