To get the votes they needed to pass the bill, the Democrats who control the House also included billions of dollars in domestic and pork barrel spending for local congressional districts. This spending includes things like $74 million for peanut storage, $25 million for spinach growers, and a host of other spending items that have nothing to do with the war. Even with all this extra spending tacked on, the vote in the House was very close. This means that the Democrats do not have enough votes to override my veto.
First off – the Congress controls the power of the purse. It is not up to the President to decide everything that is included within that purse. If that was the case then the President would control the power.
Second – The people of this country voted for this bill yesterday. This started last November when Americans took to the polls and overwhelmingly voted to return the Democrats to power.
People are not buying the lines of bullshit that come out of this White House anymore. We are to suddenly believe that the same administration who was wrong about every single thing regarding Iraq is going to be right about this one? Give me a fucking break! In January, Republicans were saying that within 60-90 days we would see if the surge is working. Well the 60 days is up and it is not working. If anything it will make it harder to prevent secular violence. The insurgents have all moved out of Baghdad and are now spread throughout the country. Great – more widespread carnage to accompany this failed war.
Perhaps the next step to make Bush listen to the people is impeachment hearings. It is time for this failed leader to pay for his errors.
