Throughout the years of Obama I can’t count how many times I heard Republicans yell that he was ignoring the Constitution. Their arguments always boiled down to the Obama administrations interpretation of a law, and the right disagreeing with it. It never was based on actually trying to rewrite the Constitution.
Let me expand. The 14th Amendment, adopted in 1868, starts off with:
All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
Do we remember at any point in the 8 years of President Obama, him trying to say “nah….that doesn’t matter anymore?” I sure don’t.
But sadly we no longer live in the age of Obama. Now we live in the age of “I an do whatever I want” Trump and that very part of our Constitution, added by the process of Amendment; well he is just going to erase it with the stroke of his Executive Order pen.
In an interview with Axios, Trump is claiming that his legal counsel is telling him he doesn’t need to have the Constitution. Instead he can do it via executive order. You can hear the words direct from his mouth:
So will all those so-called “Constitutional patriots” we heard so much about during Obama’s years step forward and rise up against this? Unlikely. Instead the Republicans, who constantly acted like the pure defenders of our Constitution, will happily go with this plan. After all, thou shall not speak ill of other Republicans.
Plus, all this could end up a double win. The Republicans get to keep the brown people out for awhile, and once this hits the Supreme Court, which it will, they will most likely rule against Trump. See – Kavanaugh wasn’t a puppet!
Of course while all that plays out, just remember that every Republican supporting this is violating that oath they took with hand on bible to defend our Constitution.
