Atlanta sees their first white Christmas since 1882

As the country and most of world experiences below average temperatures and record snow falls, the wingnuts are starting their annual cry of “global warming is a lie!” This piece in the New York Times sparked this year’s season of denial:

THE earth continues to get warmer, yet it’s feeling a lot colder outside. Over the past few weeks, subzero temperatures in Poland claimed 66 lives; snow arrived in Seattle well before the winter solstice, and fell heavily enough in Minneapolis to make the roof of the Metrodome collapse; and last week blizzards closed Europe’s busiest airports in London and Frankfurt for days, stranding holiday travelers. The snow and record cold have invaded the Eastern United States, with more bad weather predicted.

All of this cold was met with perfect comic timing by the release of a World Meteorological Organization report showing that 2010 will probably be among the three warmest years on record, and 2001 through 2010 the warmest decade on record.

The U.S. is late to the party with explaining what is happening here. A week ago articles started appearing in the U.K, starting with the Independent and then the Daily Mail, which starts off with this great summary:

It’s snowing in Australia and California yet ‘warm’ in Greenland

But I’m sure the right doesn’t understand little things like the fact that it is the start of Summer in Australia.

Overall I still blame the scientists and Global Warming evangelists for this problem. The name, while factually correct, totally misconstrues what is happening to the planet. Our environment is in total disarray and that means we see record breaking summers and winters. In other words it should be called “the planet is fucked” instead of “global warming”.
