The State of Iraq

Well this past week, we heard that Rumsfeld could be
looking at pulling troops out starting as early as next spring, effectively
setting a “timetable” which the President said would not be done. Rumsfeld also
went to Iraq to push the Iraqi government to speed up their work on developing a
democracy and securing their land. So now with that all said lets see how things
are going.

Today we learn about five US soldiers being killed in Iraq
in two separate incidents of roadside bombs. This brings the US total number of
soldiers killed in Iraq to 1796 per ICasualities.org.

We also learned on this day that Iraq is seeking an extra
month to finish authoring their constitution. Something that is sure to delay
troop withdrawals. Glad Rumsfeld went there and told them to hurry it up.

To make matters even worse, Sunni leaders were able to obtain a petition with
one million signatures asking for the immediate withdrawal of US and coalition
forces in Iraq. This was presented at a demonstration outside the Green Zone
yesterday in which approximately 1,000 Sunnis demonstrated.

Now since a little over a month ago it was impossible to
tell when we would be able to start withdrawing troops and the President told
the American People in prime time that there would be no time tables, does this
mean the President is further using this war for political gain? I questioned
the trip of Rumsfeld this week and the timetable. I thought it was funny that
only a few short weeks later, we see the improvement everyone has been waiting
for. In fact there hasn’t been any improvement. What we were seeing was a show
to try and reverse the downward spiral of poll ratings the President has been
engulfed in. The timing of the withdrawal will also coincide with a mid-term
Congressional election, which is to say the least “fishy”.

Every initiative this President has taken has had only one
motivation. That motivation is political. Rather it be from his corporate
supporters or the backbone of his political party, he sticks to the RNC’s vision
without concern for the loss of life or cost to the taxpayers.
