Chris “Tweety” Matthews has an article up about the Southern Republicans Convention going on this weekend and in particular their straw poll vote for the 2008 Presidential candidate:
Sources tell me that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., plans to shock his supporters tonight by asking them to NOT vote for him in the presidential straw poll that will be conducted by The Hotline on Saturday.
Instead, McCain will urge his followers to write in President Bush’s name.
What can I say about this. How about – PLEASE DO. Keep rallying behind this highly unpopular President with all the failed policies. Show Americans that no matter how much the President screws up the country, Republicans will support him as long as he is Republican.
I use to think McCain was a good guy but my opinion of him has greatly changed. After the way he was treated in the 2000 Republican primaries by Bush and Rove, it shows that McCain is worried about one thing and one thing only – McCain. He don’t stand on principles or values. He stands on what is going to do best for him. Right now he figures making this stand will show he put all his faith in the President and that will help him in 2008. Well guess again.
Now I know some might be saying “well it is politics”. That it is. I would like you to think back to the heated torture ban that McCain sponsored. After words of a showdown emerged, Bush ended up signing it into law but not before attaching one of his great “executive privileges” that gives him the right to also ignore the ban. That of course did not get as much press and McCain never commented on it. He went through this big song and dance just to try and win some moderate support.
Now America is starting to see more that McCain is not the moderate he claims to be. He even publicly said this week that he would of signed the abortion ban into law if he were the governor of South Dakota. Look at current polls regarding the abortion issue and that is proof enough that McCain is about as moderate as Bush or Tom Delay.
Actually this news is good for our side. It helps open up the true John McCain and expose him for being further on the right than he would lead you to believe. With polls showing support for McCain in 08 and him being the Democrats biggest fear, they now have the ammo they need to wage a battle against him. They need to start the McCain attacks now, much like the Republicans have started their attacks on Hilary. Let the Americans who do not follow the news as close as us bloggers know that McCain is anything but a moderate and electing him will give us the threat of repeating what has happened with this presidency.
