The Attempt on Cheney

I am sure everyone has heard the news that the Taliban bombed a U.S. base in Afghanistan, where Dick Cheney was staying. The Taliban then released a statement that they were targeting Cheney. With all this news, there is a key question that isn’t gaining that much attention. Take this line:

“This shows how much the militants have penetrated the intelligence of the Afghan security forces. It is a most shocking attack,” retired Pakistani general turned analyst Talat Masood told AFP.

Cheney’s visits to Pakistan and Afghanistan were unannounced and shrouded in even tighter secrecy than when US President George W Bush travelled to the two countries in March 2006.

How exactly did the Taliban learn about Cheney’s visit? Was it from within the Afghan government? If this is the case then Afghanistan is far worse than anyone is admitting. I am sure only a few key people within the upper levels of the government knew about the trip. That or was it someone at the airport Cheney landed at? This is a key issue surrounding the attacks. You would think the media would push this issue to try and get answers or a progress report on what exactly transpired.

This also shows how quickly the Taliban can organize and launch an attack. We are learning more every day that our adversaries in both Iraq and Afghanistan are far more organized than anyone in the administration is letting on to.
