Ohio's Idealogical Crusade Continues. Up Next: Abortions

Posted 6/7/11 at 8:40am by jamie

Since taking control of Ohio in January, the Republicans, lead by Governor John Kasich, have been on a rampage of right wing ideological legislation. Now the Ohio Assembly is set to take up another slice of that agenda:

Abortions in Ohio would be banned at most publicly funded hospitals, clinics and other facilities under a proposal Senate Republicans are considering putting in the state budget, a Senate GOP official told The Associated Press on Monday.

The official, who had direct knowledge of the changes being discussed, requested anonymity because the revisions were still a part of negotiations.

State senators are also weighing a separate amendment to restrict public employees' insurance from covering abortions, the official said. Not included would be those public employees of the state's two chartered counties and chartered municipalities, which account for roughly two-thirds of the cities in the state.

This can be added to the growing list of idealogical legislation either passed or in the process of being passed, which includes: stripping unions of bargaining rights, opening Ohio parks to oil drilling, stopping the voter approved casinos, allowing people to carry guns into bars, etc., etc., etc.

The Republicans have no intentions of creating jobs in Ohio. They don't care about our state's economy. All the Republicans are worried about is rushing through an agenda based upon their social agenda.

Rahm-A-Gone?

Posted 9/28/10 at 9:12am by jamie

6a00d83451586c69e2011168678f39970c-800wi It’s starting to look up for October:

White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, widely expected to leave the White House to make a long coveted run for Chicago mayor, could make an announcement on his decision as soon as Friday, a source close to him said.

Emanuel has not made a final decision, said the person familiar with Emanuel's thinking, who spoke on condition of anonymity for that reason. The dominant factor at this point is the impact the move and the campaign would have on Emanuel's wife and three young children, who live with him in Washington, the source said.

Almost all the news services are reporting the same thing, and when that happens odds are it’s going to come to fruition. Hopefully the new COS won’t be Rahm 2.0, but rather someone who stands by the principals of their party.

Pharma Deal Fail

Posted 12/29/09 at 5:12pm by jamie

Another reason why President Obama shouldn’t have done this deal with big phrama – they are cheaters:

“The states are the next battle,” said Richard Kirsch, national campaign manager for the liberal advocacy group Health Care for America Now, “and the insurers and health care industry are primed up and ready to go. The industry has enormous power at the state level, and very few states have state-level consumer groups that are able to lobby effectively against them.”

Last year, for example, the drug industry poured more than $20 million into political contributions in states around the country. In California alone, the industry spent an additional $80 million on advertising to beat back a California ballot measure intended to push down drug prices.

Now, speaking on condition of anonymity because the pharmaceutical trade group is officially backing the federal overhaul, industry lobbyists say they are eyeing Congressional proposals that would expand a state’s Medicaid obligations, and are preparing to fight efforts to make some of it up by paying less for drugs. (A spokeswoman for the National Conference of State Legislatures said many states were contemplating just that.)

Time to call big pharma back into the White House and tell them the deal's off. After that get changes to the health care bill, including reimportation, that big pharma was against. These people have been screwing Americans over for years and they won't stop now.

Another Win For Terrorism

Posted 12/27/09 at 9:46am by jamie

Still catching up on the news of the attempted airline terrorist attack from Christmas and this story really caught my eye:

Some airlines were telling passengers on Saturday that new government security regulations prohibit them from leaving their seats beginning an hour before landing

The regulations are a response to a suspected terrorism incident on Christmas Day.

Air Canada said in a statement that new rules imposed by the Transportation Security Administration limit on-board activities by passengers and crew in U.S. airspace. The airline said that during the final hour of flight passengers must remain seated. They won't be allowed access to carryon baggage or to have any items on their laps.

Flight attendants on some domestic flights are informing passengers of similar rules. Passengers on a flight from New York to Tampa Saturday morning were also told they must remain in their seats and couldn't have items in their laps, including laptops and pillows.

The TSA issued a security directive for U.S.-bound flights from overseas, according to a transportation security official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly.

And this doesn’t even sum it up right. On This Week they were talking with Robert Gibbs and the new rule being looked at is that those on international flights can have no personal items in their laps. In a global economy, think of someone doing an 8 hour flight from New York to London wanting to get some work done on their laptop. Well no more. I guess we really can’t get on troubled companies having corporate jets because now they have a great excuse.

An Example Of Who Shouldn’t Be A Police Officer

Posted 7/30/09 at 11:05am by jamie

There has been a lot of talk about Justin Barrett, a police officer with Boston. He made fame yesterday when it was exposed that he wrote a letter to the media and referred to Henry Gates as a “banana eating jungle monkey'”. if you missed it, here’s the run down:

The law enforcement official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Officer Justin Barrett referred to the black scholar as a " jungle monkey" in the letter, written in reaction to media coverage of Gates's arrest July 16.

Barrett, a 36-year-old who has been on the job for two years, was stripped of his gun and badge yesterday and faces a termination hearing in the next week, said police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll. He has no previous disciplinary record, she said.

Barrett will be represented by the police union in his hearing, as he should be. This gets into a very iffy area of our first amendment rights. One way he may have stripped himself of that protection though is by identifying himself as a police officer in his “anonymous” email.

But there is something more interesting here. In Barrett’s letter he made a statement that should be a warning sign that a person does not understand the very fundamental’s of our nation’s laws:

We Need A Criminal Investigation Of The AP

Posted 11/1/08 at 1:09pm by jamie

Not really, but if this happened to John McCain the right would be screaming for just that:

Barack Obama's aunt, a Kenyan woman who has been quietly living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned.

Zeituni Onyango, 56, referred to as "Aunti Zeituni" in Obama's memoir, was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP late Friday. This person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to discuss Onyango's case.

Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one of them a federal law enforcement official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release.

Obama has already denied knowing her status and we have no reason to not believe him. But the most important part here is that federal employees violated the law to disclose this information. John Conyers is pissed about it and already firing off a letter to Chertoff. Hopefully this will lead to an investigation. Again - this is the proper way to handle it. The right always goes after the media when there is a leak, but on this story they are circling the wagons around the media. Fucking hypocrites to the end.

Strategy Session

Posted 10/29/08 at 10:47am by jamie

Jonathan Martin is reporting about a secret session of conservatives planned for after the election:

Two days after next week's election, top conservatives will gather at the Virginia weekend home of one of the movement's most prominent members to begin a conversation about their role in the GOP and how best to revive a party that may be out of power at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue next year.

The meeting will include a "who's who of conservative leaders -- economic, national security and social," said one attendee, who shared initial word of the secret session only on the basis of anonymity and with some details about the host and location redacted.

The decision to waste no time in plotting their moves in the post-Bush era reflects the widely-held view among many on the right, and elsewhere, that the GOP is heading toward major losses next week.

Oh to be a fly on the wall. The conservative movement has been greatly crippled by people like George Bush and Karl Rove. Will they be able to turn that around? Hopefully not.

Looks like Iraq is ready for us to get the hell out of dodge Iraq:

The proposed agreement calls for Americans to hand over parts of Baghdad's Green Zone — where the U.S. Embassy is located — to the Iraqis by the end of 2008. It would also remove U.S. forces from Iraqi cities by June 30, 2009, according to the two senior officials, both close to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and familiar with the negotiations.

The officials, who spoke separately on condition of anonymity because the talks are ongoing, said all U.S. combat troops would leave Iraq by October 2010, with the remaining support personnel gone "around 2013." The schedule could be amended if both sides agree — a face-saving escape clause that would extend the presence of U.S. forces if security conditions warrant it.

Again it looks like Obama was correct all along and Bush and McCain were - well WRONG! I know that's a real shocker (yeah right).

Army Suicides At Two Decade High

Posted 5/29/08 at 2:05pm by jamie

Truly disturbing statistics out by the Army today:

Pentagon officials say there were fewer Army suicides last year than they had feared. But it was still the highest number in almost two decades.

Two defense officials said Thursday that 108 troops committed suicide in 2007, the most since 1990. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the full report on the deaths wasn't being released until later Thursday.

I like how they try to downplay the numbers by saying "fewer than they had feared". Iraq is causing so much stress on our soldiers, and for what? So George Bush could achieve some "greatness" in his mind? Every solider killed either in action, or by their own hand, as well as every Iraqi life lost is the fault of this incompetent, arrogant, idiotic thing we call a President. Yes - he is a murderer and should be held accountable for his actions.

National RNC Scolds Tenn. Gop

Posted 2/28/08 at 11:38am by jamie

But do they mean it?

The Republican National Committee this afternoon scolded the Tennessee Republican Party over their use of "Barack Hussein Obama" in an official press release and warned the state party that they will be denounced by the national committee if they use the Democrat's middle name again, said a GOP official close to the RNC.

"The RNC has notified the Tennessee GOP that they do not support or agree with their approach," said this source, requesting anonymity to discuss the private conversation between a staffer in the national committee's political department and a top aide at the state party. "If they don't refrain from doing so again, they will be publicly repudiated by the Republican National Committee."

Maybe they should also scold the Tennessee GOP for hiring a total dumb ass to be their mouthpiece.

Time For Iran Again

Posted 1/7/08 at 10:40am by jamie

Are war drums beating again?

In what U.S. officials called a serious provocation, Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats harassed and provoked three U.S. Navy ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, threatening to explode the American vessels.

U.S. forces were on the verge of firing on the Iranian boats in the early Sunday incident, when the boats turned and moved away, a Pentagon official said. "It is the most serious provocation of this sort that we've seen yet," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record.

The incident occurred at about 5 a.m. local time Sunday as a U.S. Navy cruiser, destroyer and frigate were on their way into the Persian Gulf and passing through the strait — a major oil shipping route.

I would love to be able to say I believe our accounts of what happened, but I can't. This administration has been wanting a war with Iran for so long now, I wouldn't put it past them to order those boats into Iranian waters, or do some other action to try and provoke them. Once we get a commander in chief who doesn't reach climax at the thought of war and lie to the American people constantly then I might buy it.

I've Said It Before And I'll Say It Again

The Soviet Union isn't gone - it has just moved to America:

The N.S.A.’s reliance on telecommunications companies is broader and deeper than ever before, according to government and industry officials, yet that alliance is strained by legal worries and the fear of public exposure.

To detect narcotics trafficking, for example, the government has been collecting the phone records of thousands of Americans and others inside the United States who call people in Latin America, according to several government officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the program remains classified. But in 2004, one major phone carrier balked at turning over its customers’ records. Worried about possible privacy violations or public relations problems, company executives declined to help the operation, which has not been previously disclosed.

Do we have any leaders in Congress who actually care about this country and will take the actions needed to stop this act of tyranny? Since Harry Reid is giving the administration what they want on the Telecom companies, I would venture to say no. Goodbye America - it's been nice knowing you.

We Should Change The Definition Of Privacy

Posted 11/11/07 at 9:27am by jamie

From the administration that HATES everything America stands for:

A top intelligence official says it is time people in the United States changed their definition of privacy.

Privacy no longer can mean anonymity, says Donald Kerr, a deputy director of national intelligence. Instead, it should mean that government and businesses properly safeguards people's private communications and financial information.

Kerr's comments come as Congress is taking a second look at the Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Act.

Maybe it would be better if the administration followed the law. Wow - that is an absurd idea. I thought we protections in place to make sure that an administration followed laws. Oh wait! The cowards running Congress took that option "off the table". They hate America just us much as Bush does.

Senator Craig Exposes A Much Larger Problem

Posted 8/28/07 at 11:57am by jamie

Dave Kurtz has a very interesting post up at TPM asking exactly what Senator Craig did wrong.

We've had lots of back and forth discussion here internally about what conduct by Sen. Craig in that Minneapolis airport restroom was actually illegal. We've posted the arrest report, so take a look and reach your own conclusions.

Leering stares, foot tapping, a lingering presence. Are any of those, even taken together, what most reasonable people would call criminal? Is it because they happened in a bathroom? God knows they happen every night in bars and other public spaces, among gays and straights.

Please take a moment and read the entire post. I have been trying to wrap my brain around this very question.

The charges do seem very far fetched, and I highly doubt they would have stuck if Senator Craig would have decided to fight them. The problem is he knew what he was planning on doing and in turn pleaded to the charges. I got a funny feeling this decision was made by him in hopes of saving public embarrassment, a plan that did not pan out how he wanted.

So a man soliciting sex from another man in a restroom is worthy of a sting operation. Does the same apply if a man solicits sex from a woman, or vice a versa? It appears that this case really exposes the hypocrisy of our legal system and those charged with enforcing it.

BREAKING: Gonzo Is Gonzo!

Posted 8/27/07 at 7:50am by jamie

So long idiot!:

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and accusations of perjury before Congress, has resigned. A senior administration official said he would announce the decision later this morning in Washington.

Mr. Gonzales, who had rebuffed calls for his resignation, submitted his to President Bush by telephone on Friday, the official said. His decision was not immediately announced, the official added, until after the president invited him and his wife to lunch at his ranch near here.

Mr. Bush has not yet chosen a replacement but will not leave the position open long, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the Attorney General's resignation had not yet been made public.

Now we can see who the replacement will be.
