Brian Bilbray Says The Arizona Birther Law Is Aimed At John McCain

Posted 4/22/10 at 9:37am by jamie

Yesterday on Hardball I heard the most amazing spin/lie I think I have ever heard. While discussing the new law in Arizona that says candidates must show their birth certificate to be on the ballot, Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-CA) decided to totally twist the reason for the new law and declare that it is aimed at John McCain:

This is a very interesting statement, and one that follows politics at all knows to be false. John McCain has been on the ballot in Arizona for over three decades and it was never an issue before. It didn’t become an issue until the crazy birthers came out questioning President Obama’s citizenship – something that has been disproven time and time again.

I’ll hand it to Matthews for handling this idiot rather well. I am also kind of shocked this exchange hasn’t gained more attention in the blogosphere. I doubt Bilbray is just speaking from the crazy corner of his brain. I got a feeling this is the kind of spin we will hear a lot more as people talk about Arizona’s transformation into a police and birther state.

Google To Offer High Speed Internet

Posted 2/13/10 at 9:48am by jamie

Finally parts of the U.S. might see some real internet speeds:

Google says it will run fiber-to-the-home trials at the astounding data speed of 1 gigabit per second. They'll sell this service at "a competitive price" to 50,000 people, possibly rising to 500,000 people.

It's at this point that I'd like to toss around some choice slang that is not acceptable when printed under the NPR banner. But I can't. So I'll just leave it at this: Holy cow!

I can't get past that speed number: One gigabit per second. Google says that's about 100 times faster than most home broadband connections. I'd say it's more than 100 times faster. My DSL connection is certainly not running at 10 Mbps. This is the kind of number that makes you sit back and wonder, if they can do that, why isn't someone else -- a dedicated ISP, for instance -- already doing it?

Internet speeds in the United States suck to the point that the birthplace of the internet is now ranked 28th in the world for internet speed. When it comes to broadband penetration, the U.S. is slightly better, ranking at 20th. So why hasn’t the existing ISPs been doing anything? Simple – they are greedy. Infrastructure is a big cost and they don’t want to invest in it.

ACORN Cleared Again

Posted 12/23/09 at 4:33pm by jamie

Somebody just took a big dump in the Christmas stocking of all the wingnuts:

A report by the Congressional Research Service says ACORN hasn’t broken any laws in the last give years, but the filmmakers who secretly taped ACORN workers may have violated state law.

The CRS report, however, will give the organization’s backers some comfort and conservatives some ammo. It details that the, the beleaguered community group has received tens of millions of taxpayer dollars in the past several fiscal years — including one $16 million grant and an additional grant worth $7.8 million. An ACORN aide noted that much of the money was to ACORN Housing, which is legally a separate entity.

Yup, Exactly

Here’s why the White House will go after Howard Dean but not the actual people who are derailing health care reform:

People wondering why the White House does tough, public pushback against Howard Dean but not against the likes of Ben Nelson or Joe Lieberman ought to take a deep breath and consider that Nelson and Lieberman . . . get votes in the United States Senate.

The White House hasn’t publicly attacked Bernie Sanders or Roland Burris over there Dean-esque doubts any more than they’ve publicly denounced Nelson or Lieberman. That’s because the White House doesn’t want to get into a downward spiral of recriminations with any of the 62 Senators who they’re hoping will vote for the bill.

As Aravosis puts it “In other words, they'll respect you when they fear you”. Truer words never spoken.

Where Is Harold Ford?

Posted 11/25/09 at 9:16am by jamie

I noticed Harold Ford hasn’t been on Morning Joe as much as usual lately and perhaps this is the reason:

Democratic sources say that former Tennessee Rep. Harold Ford Jr. -- who relocated to New York City after his unsuccessful Senate bid in 2006 -- has been talking about the possibility of running against vulnerable rookie New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

That could be an interesting battle. Both are blue dogs, so I don’t know who I would support in a battle between the two.

Bigger Than The 9/12 Rally?

Posted 11/5/09 at 6:26pm by jamie

And the failure in math from the right begins:

After the 9/12 march on Washington, conservatives falsely claimed that over a million people attended, when in reality the closest thing to an official count — numbers given by the Washington DC Fire Department to ABCNews.com — placed the crowd at “approximately 60,000 to 70,000 people.” Though today’s anti-health care reform rally has been much more sparsely attended, that hasn’t stopped conservatives from inflating the numbers again. On G. Gordon Liddy’s radio show today, producer Franklin Raff, who was on the ground at the rally, told guest host Joseph Farah that the crowd is “just as big or bigger than” the 9/12 rally, which Raff estimated “at about a million.”

Capital Hill Police are estimating it at 4,000, and here is a nice aerial photo of the crowd today:

You really have to feel bad for the women married to these wingnuts. I guess they get told every night that 2 inches equals a foot.

The U.S. Could Learn From Britain’s Texting While Driving Laws

Posted 11/2/09 at 8:58am by jamie

Today’s New York Times has an interesting article about a 22 year old girl in Britain who was texting while driving and ended up killing a 24 year old girl. The driver got 21 months for this horrible accident, which is far less than the recommended 4-7 years under British law.

Laws like this are something the U.S. should be imposing. Just last week we had a couple of kids in town seriously injured in an accident and the cause was texting while driving. Accidents like this are on the rise also. We read about them more and more and some end not so badly, while others turn out to be very tragic.

So why hasn’t the U.S. taken an aggressive stance against people texting while driving? There have been tons of meetings and hearings, and they all have come to the same conclusion – it’s every bit as dangerous, if not more, than drinking and driving.

I came into the cell phone age rather early, back in the early 90s. My first phone was one of those big bag phones. It didn’t have things like texting or web browsing, since the web wasn’t really accessible back then. Instead it was just that – a phone. When I signed my $50 a month contract for 50 minutes I also had to sign a statement of acknowledgment regarding a state law; “anyone operating a motor vehicle must have both hands on the steering wheel”. Such a law makes it impossible to text while driving today, yet no one has to sign an acknowledgement of this law.

Boehner Hasn’t Met Anyone That Supports The Public Option

Posted 10/1/09 at 11:23pm by jamie

This is making a lot of news right now, so I got to ask this – are you shocked? Boehner didn’t hold a single townhall during August. Instead he chose to speak to a gathering of tea baggers. Yeah there is a lot of support there.

How about Boehner’s constituents contacting his office? Well I am one of his constituents and contacted his office numerous times in the past. What do I end up with? Talking points and asking to give to his reelection. This guy does absolutely nothing for the people of his district – NOTHING.

So no, it’s no shock what so ever that Boehner hasn’t met anyone. He is a coward that hides from opposition, even if it’s  the very people he is supposed to represent.

E-Cigarettes In The News

Posted 4/7/09 at 11:47am by jamie

A very good story out of Fort Wayne where a woman, who has smoked for 30 years, has been able to kick the habit by using an e-cigarette:

Hall smoked Winston Ultra Lights for 30 years. For a while, she tried to cut down on expenses by rolling her own, sitting down for an hour every other night and cranking out two or three packs using a little machine she bought.

Then she tried to quit, but nothing worked – not the patches, the gum or cold turkey. One day, skimming through a free magazine, she saw an ad for electronic smokes.

Hall ordered the kit and, after it arrived, laid it out on the table, looked at it nervously and smoked three regular cigarettes while she pondered whether to even try it. We were, after all, talking about some weird battery-powered doodad that comes with little vials of nicotine, a deadly poison.

But hey, she figured, I smoke cigarettes. What’s the harm in puffing on this?

Two months later, Hall is still puffing away on this gadget that imitates everything a regular cigarette does – a tube that looks just like a cigarette, a light that makes it look like a burning cigarette and a smoke-like cloud that contains nicotine.

Hall’s story is like so many other I have read about and can personally attest to. But that isn’t stopping the government from getting in on it. Here’s an article in today’s Washington Post:

Why Does The Government Want Me To Keep Smoking?

Posted 4/6/09 at 7:28am by jamie

For close to a quarter of a century I have been a smoker. I average about a pack and a half a day. During this time I have tried everything. The patches didn’t do a thing. The gum and lozenges never worked. I even tried Chantix, the “stop smoking” pill twice and had no luck.

Then a couple of weeks ago I learned about a product called NJoy, which is an electronic cigarette.

Electronic cigarettes are gaining huge popularity. They turn a liquid form of nicotine into a vapor. You drag on it like a cigarette and get your needed nicotine. On top of that it tastes pretty much like a cigarette and you get the same mechanics of smoking. All that without the tar and harmful ingredients found in regular cigarettes, well except nicotine.

This magical device helped me quit last week and I feel great. I get a minor craving every once in awhile for a real cigarette, especially after meals, but a quick hit of my NJoy and I am back to normal.

So guess what?

The government wants to ban these things. They think that these devices, which have helped thousands quit now, might be a danger to us. Their argument – they don’t know if inhaling nicotine is harmful or not. There for they think these products should be banned until the FDA can study them. Of course that would mean banning them for years and then when they say “well yeah inhaling nicotine is harmful, just like smoking a cigarette, but at least your not inhaling tons of carcinogens with these”, then they will allow them to be sold with a huge tax.

It amazes me that they can even attempt this argument. For years the government turned their back on the dangers of smoking. Sure they said “oh its bad for you”, but did they do anything about it really? Hell they wouldn’t even regulate the cigarette companies. Just now there is legislation going through to do that, and its passage in Senate isn’t certain.

Coming To The Defense

Joe Klein sums up what I have been feeling:

I've been watching cable news this afternon--I know, get a life!--and you know, Barack Obama comes from the same state as Rod Blagoyevich. That is really suspicious! What did he know and when did he know it? This is the first major scandal of the Obama Administration! He has to explain himself. You notice he hasn't had any press conferences since this thing broke...oh, wait. He's having a press conference tomorrow...And Patrick Fitzgerald said that Obama is no way involved in this? I'll bet! That's not what Sean Hannity thinks! It's a coverup for sure. Will Obama be the first President to be impeached before he's inaugurated?

Everyone is digging for connections. They won’t find them though. Even if Obama was somehow connected, or had knowledge of what was going on, he is way to smart to get caught up in this. Even major media outlets are grasping at far-reaching straws to try and make a connection.

Class Act

Posted 11/20/08 at 7:58am by jamie

T20060905_112716_CD06_musgravebush_400 wo weeks after losing, Marilyn Musgrave is no where to be found:

Two weeks after the brutal loss, Musgrave still hasn’t called her opponent to concede or to congratulate the victor, as is not only textbook but also mannerly to do.

Moreover, Musgrave’s ill manners bleed into her own team. Rumor has it she still — 14 days later — hasn’t even thanked her campaign staff. (Again, textbook.)

Musgrave press secretary Joseph Brettell tells us: “It’s a campaign matter, and I have no further comment.”

Those Republicans sure are a class act – aren’t they? I guess she really did take her ball and go home.

John McCain - The Leader Of Racism

Posted 10/29/08 at 6:04pm by jamie

I mentioned the other day that if John McCain didn't come out and strongly denounce the actions of his supporters with their racist chants and threats of violence that he would be remembered as an extreme racist, regardless of the outcome next week. So far McCain hasn't done anything and today the rhetoric of hate from McCain/Palin Republicans increased in Florida.

Trying To Say You're Not Racist With Racist Remarks

Posted 10/12/08 at 10:56am by jamie

It amazes me hearing Republicans go after John Lewis for his statement yesterday. His statement was 100% true. Republicans have been pushing the race card without actually saying it. What Republicans are trying to do though is say they aren't pushing race as a black and white issue. Instead they are pushing race as an Arab issue.

Look at the tone of recent ads and the whole "who is Barack Obama?" That line alone instills a feeling of racism. Sure they are trying to do it while acquainting him with Bill Ayers, but considering a McCain supporter sat on the very same board that Obama and Ayers did the question could be posed back to McCain. If that happened people wouldn't react the same, simply because he has a white face.

Every political ad is very well designed. All reactions are thought out fully. The Republicans have always had the upper hand in this. We saw it during 2004, and you can't tell me they didn't know what the responses would be from the ads today.

Obama hasn't pulled the race card, like many on the right are claiming. In fact they are proving their racist mindsets by even trying to claim this. Instead John Lewis went out and warned that we could face a serious problem in our country if the tone isn't changed in this campaign. John Lewis knows about this since he was right in the middle of it before. If Republicans want to win over more independent voters they need to stop stoking the flames of racism and embrace the remarks by one of the wisest men this country knows when it comes to racial tensions.

McCain Holds A Nation Hostage!

Posted 9/25/08 at 8:00am by jamie

Wow:

A senior campaign official says that McCain will NOT debate -- no matter what -- if Congress hasn't reached an agreement on a bailout package.

Got that - give out $700 billion or no debate. I don't know what country John McCain is from, but here in America we do not negotiate with terrorists.

86% of the public want the debate, that is expected to be viewed by over 100 million people. John McCain is trying to say no. I really think this deserves a Dick Cheney - "go fuck yourself John!".

(and I got to say I really feel sorry for the Republican Party right now. This guy is destroying one of our parties in a two party system. That is bad for America also. If I was GOP chair I would call an emergency convention and nominate a new candidate.)
