It seems that the United States media is once again to blame. As Rumsfeld
addressed reporters yesterday about the allegation of U.S. forces burning
Taliban corpses in Afghanistan he made it clear that he was upset this story was
getting reported. Take this quote from today’s
Chicago Sun
Times:
”We also recognize the damage that can be done by the allegations alone,
if they’re not true, or if there’s some explanation of some sort. But,
that’s the world we live in,”
Also, this quote which appeared in a
Reuters article makes it seem as though Rumsfeld is trying to dismiss
it as a story conjured up by the main stream media.
“My hope is that the commanders that are responsible for their troops
will find ways to accelerate the process that they have to go through, still
providing for the rights of the people who may or may not be accused of
something,”
There’s a catch though. The story was not broken by the mainstream media here
in the United States. We first heard about this story on Friday, October 21. By
that time the story was already three days old in Australia. It appeared in an
article in the
Fairfax Digital on Wednesday, October 19. Now remember that is Australian
time, meaning the article was actually published on Tuesday our time.
It seems if Rumsfeld wants to start blaming the “liberal” media on this story
then he better start with the “liberal” media in one of our coalition countries.
We most surely will see a bigger blame the media game this week on the right
wing blogs. I decided to beat them to the punch on this offensive though by
pointing out the fact that it was Australia who originally broke this story and
not our “liberal” media.
