Save Cheney – Sink Rove and Libby.

Vice President Cheney’s chief of staff, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, has “a
problem” in the investigation of the leak of a CIA operative’s identity if
his testimony conflicts with information given to the grand jury by New York
Times reporter Judith Miller, her lawyer said yesterday.Robert S. Bennett, speaking on the ABC program “This Week” on the day the
Times disclosed new information about three conversations Miller had with
Libby about the CIA employment of a White House critic’s wife, said that
“much would depend upon what Mr. Libby said to the grand jury.“If he said that he had not talked to Judy about these things or didn’t
talk about the wife, then he’s got a problem,” Bennett said, referring to
CIA operative Valerie Plame, the woman at the center of the leak
investigation. Miller told prosecutors that “to the best of her recollection
she did not know of” Plame’s employment at the CIA “before she spoke to Mr.
Libby,” he said.
That is the start of a story, which appears in today’s
Washington Post (full story
here). It seems as though even Miller’s attorney is eyeing trouble from
Scooter Libby.
Even the former Bush appologists are now jumping ship and predicting
indictments against Rove and Libby. William Krystol is more than just a
journalists, he is also co-founder of the Project for a New American Century,
the Washington think tank that outlined plans for going to war in Iraq. Krystol
is now saying he has sources close to the investigation that are telling him
Rove and Libby will both be indicted over the leak. You can view his report from
Fox News Sunday at
Crooks and Liars.
You must wonder who Krystol’s sources are telling him this. He says that his
sources are outside of Washington. Actually he reaffirms that fact a couple
times in his report and tries to say he does not know more than the average
person reading the paper, but when you consider that Krystal co-founded PNAC
with Dick Cheney you must also wonder if his sources are closer to the
investigation than he leads you to believe.
So why would the attention now be on Rove and Libby getting indicted? Just a
couple short months ago, the right wing pundits were defending those two by
saying they committed no crime. Remember that? We heard numerous arguments from
Plame was not undercover to Joe Wilson let his wifes identity out by appearing
in Who’s Who in America. The Republican National Committee even put out those
great talking points to discredit any rumor of charges, which were quickly
dissected and shot down (you can view my discrediting of the talking points in
this entry from
July 15 of this year).
Perhaps the right is trying to draw attention from another possible
indictment that many have not thought about. Today
Bloomberg is reporting that Dick Cheney is also a focus of Fitzgerald’s
investigation.
Oct. 17 (Bloomberg) — A special counsel is focusing on whether Vice
President Dick Cheney played a role in leaking a covert CIA agent’s name,
according to people familiar with the probe that already threatens top White
House aides Karl Rove and Lewis Libby. The special counsel, Patrick Fitzgerald, has questioned current and
former officials of President George W. Bush’s administration about whether
Cheney was involved in an effort to discredit the agent’s husband, Iraq war
critic and former U.S. diplomat Joseph Wilson, according to the people.Fitzgerald has questioned Cheney’s communications adviser Catherine
Martin and former spokeswoman Jennifer Millerwise and ex-White House aide
Jim Wilkinson about the vice president’s knowledge of the anti-Wilson
campaign and his dealings on it with Libby, his chief of staff, the people
said. The information came from multiple sources, who requested anonymity
because of the secrecy and political sensitivity of the investigation.

Now we are starting to see more and more that actual involvement by Cheney in
the leak could come under fire. That would explain why the right is working so
hard to make Libby and Rove the bad guy – they know that indictments could go
even higher now.
Like I said in an early post, the next week or two will be very interesting,
as matter of fact they could become historic as we see how much of Bush’s
administration starts to tumble. Water what? Watergate. Oh yeah I forgot about
that. There is now another story coming out that is possibly bigger than the
Nixon debacle.
