GOP Shows Support for Harris’ Senate
Bid From Times Wire ReportsIf there was any doubt that Florida’s top Republican leaders weren’t
behind Katherine Harris’ run for U.S. Senate, those leaders did their best
to dispel it.At the state GOP’s quarterly meeting in Lake Buena Vista, Gov. Jeb Bush
said he would campaign for Harris and encouraged a room of Republican
activists to do the same. At a separate rally, Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings gave
strong praise to Harris and told her, “Go, run and win.”In August, Harris announced her bid to challenge incumbent Democrat Bill
Nelson.
Here is the problem with this assessment. It is not that they support Harris
because they want to but rather they support her because they have to.
Republicans in Florida have gone as far as to solicit Joe Scarborough to run
against Harris and he declined. Now that they can not find someone suitable to
run against her they have to swallow their pride and back her. Of course there
isn’t much hope for her as polls are already showing incumbent Democrat Bill
Nelson
ahead by 23%. Hopefully the Republican party will continue to channel their
energy to that losing battle and ignore other ones where Democrats stand to gain
seats.
