David Ignatius has an interesting OpEd in today’s Washington Post about John McCain. The piece over all paints McCain as a Conservative by all definitions of the term. There is however one part that really struck my curious side:

“I don’t want it that badly,” McCain says. “I will continue to do what is right. I will continue to pursue torture, climate change. If that means I can’t get the Republican nomination, fine. I’ve had a happy life. The worst thing I can do is sell my soul to the devil.” He explains: “Every time I did something because I thought it would be politically helpful, it turned out badly.” As an example, he cites his waffle during the 2000 South Carolina primary, when he said flying the Confederate flag at the state capitol was a state issue.

In fact McCain has already done that. He did so by accepting the character assassination that Bush did to him in 2000 and then embracing Bush for his own political gain. Even the cold hearted Dick Cheney got defensive when his daughter was brought up during the 2004 debates, but McCain can watch his family be down right lied about by Bush and finds that is ok. McCain not only sold his soul to the devil but gave his family up in the deal also. I guess this is true “conservative family values”.
