Nancy Pelosi gave a great speech today on the House floor, stating why Bush’s surge should be stopped.
The Huffington Post has the transcript up.
The vote is coming soon on this resolution and it will pass. It has been frustrating watching it. The Republican’s talking points have been such:
- If we leave Iraq today, tomorrow al Qaeda will be here
- Leaving Iraq will result in Iran nuking Israel
and my favorite:
- This is non-binding, it means nothing.
Are these Republicans that stupid that they can’t realize what they are saying? If it means nothing, then the other 2 points are moot.
Oh wait! I forgot another great talking point. “The Democrats are bowing to the far left extremists of their party and will cut funding to the troops”. Fine – let’s use that argument. Then everytime the Republicans try to ban abortion or do some “right to life” fight, then they are bowing to the extremists of the right wings like the ones that bomb abortion clinics.
Then there is this new attack on Murtha. They are trying to make it out that he wants to leave all our troops in Iraq stranded and without equipment. Of course Murtha is doing nothing of the sort. He is wanting to make sure the troops that go to Iraq HAVE the necessary equipment to protect themselves, something the Republicans apparently are against.
The overall sense of the debate is simple. The Democrats realize that Bush has gone unchecked and it needs to stop. The Republicans want to do whatever they can to keep this war going – all to save their own face and the reputation of one of the most hated Presidents in American history. Funny how these Republicans would rather watch our young soldiers die then admit fault. I believe Lincoln would have said those kind of people need to be hanged.
